John Megahan has entered the Master and Servant 2D.

Challenge Page (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/masterandservant/view_entries.php?challenger=7266)

Latest Update: Final Image: My sweet dragon
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/8/7266/7266_1116472917_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/8/7266/7266_1116472917_large.jpg)

So it's done...

Concept: The princess was captured and held prisoner by the dragon. Over time the dragon realized he enjoyed having her around. She was someone to talk to, scratch behind his ears and mend the wounds he received while fighting. Gradually their roles shifted and the princess became the master. She realized that being with the dragon meant she had extraordinary wealth and protection. Also it meant that those pesky suitors that kept coming to save her and thereby win her heart could be quickly and efficiently dealt with. Now the dragon acts as the womans servant and does her bidding and they both live happily everafter.

Thanks for the encouraging comments! Sci-fi is an entirely new genre for me. I come from a biological illustration background but this is stuff that I've wanted to do for a long time. Will be posting more soon.

Prelim line art. Hopefully lineart \"milestone\" will be done by tomorrow. Still a lot of work to do on the background and I don\'t like the throne. Story outline for this is coming along and will be up soon.

Line Art. May change a bit more as I work through colors etc but this is getting close to what I want. Still don't like the throne...

Colors are starting to come along. I'll be bringing in some cool hues and start pounding out the details.

I like the concept and the disposition of the characters. The begin of paint is good, perhaps one crits, the woman in the forground is too big by report at the master, this make an perspective error, you must be decrease the woman

I had noticed that at the beginning of the drawing but then decided to keep the proportions. It seemed interesting to me that the master might be a short, scrawny and decrepit old guy but with hands that are proportionately larger and evil looking, almost like the claws of a bird. Maybe it doesn't work....

Anyway, the more I thought of this Master Servant topic the more I became interested in the complexity of that subject of power and subjugation. I want to play off of that and make that relationship more complex and interesting. For instance it is assumed that the servant is the girl, but she has defied her master by talking with another man. Even though the evil priest can sentance her to death, is she still the servant? He has lost mastery over her. I was thinking of maybe adding a painting of the womans portrait in the background, suggesting that perhaps she might be one of his favorite concubines. In that case perhaps he is, in a way, a servant to her. In the crowd I will be adding more people and I want to suggest some complex relationships of mastery and servitude there that the viewer can play with as well. It's a fun topic.

A little more progress on colors. I don't like how the background is working out and will probably change it. I want a real gothic look to the architecture. Crowd in background needs lots of work still. Well, everything still needs lots of work....

Cool line drawings dude. Just one critzs, i don't know if its my eyes, but it looks like she's a little far from him. Their distance seems a little off. I'll be checking back. Goodluck

I'd better add some story to this. Idea is the civilation is dominated by a religious cult. The worst nightmare of a government, kind of taliban meets catholic church being led by hitler. The high priest/ruler has a harem of women at his beck and call. This girl was one of his favorite concubines but she commited the crime of talking to another man, the guy on his knees in the background. If she confesses and agrees never to talk or give attention to another man again she will live, otherwise the sentence is death. She refuses to give in (aka braveheart) and is sentenced to death. I want her to protray nobility and integrity in the face of evil, the slave who is breaking the bonds of slavery even though it means a death sentence.

I agree, there are definatley major size problems here. For her to be this close to the viewer, his forearm would have to be about a metre long and if this was so, his hands would not be similar in size. My suggestion would be to make her small by about 70% and make his right hand smaller as well. Maybe you could crop your image so it's closer to either portrait or landscape as there's probably little use for the extra space? - my two cents... the idea is cool and the lighting looks great. Good luck with it.

Here is a quick resizing of the girl. Don't pay attention to her legs yet.

I'm completely changing my concept because I like this new idea and it can be used on another project that i'm working on. This will save me some precious time that I need right now. Idea here is a girl enslaved by a dragon. Over time they have become friends so the master servant relationship is not real obvious anymore. I still like the idea of blurring the line of master/servant. Here the dragon could be somewhat of a slave to the girl since she is the only one who will scratch behind his ears!

I'll probably finish the first picture in the coming months but not now.

Well crud! What are you going to do with "The Judgment"? Put that in the 2D WIP section and finish that one, please. It was coming along fantastically. You even accommodated some good criticism which is the mark of a true professional.

Good luck with this latest entry! It looks fun.

Thanks

Yeah yeah I know. I'm under the gun right now to finish several illustrations at my day job and two in my freelance work. So, I had to compromise some and combine this project with another one that I'm working on. Anyhoo I promise I'll put "The Judgement" into the wip section and finish it in the next couple of months. I want to totally revise the background architecture in the style of a mideval church, very gothic and ethereal. I'll probably try to put a basic structure together using my meager lightwave skills then paint over the structure.

More updates soon...

finally had some time to add more color and detail. I decided to change the background and focus primarily on the girl and dragon. I may go even closer on the two and emphasize just their relationship.

Thanks much for the positive comments. Hopefully I will be able to get a fair amount done today. There's a pot of coffee nearby and I'm looking forward to some progress. If anyone has some crits go ahead and tear it up. The more feedback, good, bad or indifferent, the better!

I agree. This was not really my choice for this contest and not the best subject, but due to time pressures I am using this composition which is part of another illustration that I have to do for work. I would have perferred using my previous picture for this contest. Aaaargh!

Oh well....
