View Full Version : Device aspect ratio in MtoR
vimal 04-06-2005, 01:13 PM Hi friends,
i'm working on a TV project in PAL res with a device aspect ratio of 1.778 and a pixel aspect ratio of 1.422. in mtor globals we've only pixel aspect ratio, how do i match my mtor render with my maya render resolution? In mtor help it's mentioned that with the combination of display res and pixel aspect ratio we can achieve it, but how? i'm not getting it...somebody help me.......

Device Aspect Ratio (AR) = Image AR x Pixel AR

Nope, i didn't understand. i got the formula how DeviceAR is derieved but how should i set my globals in mtor inorder to get the same result as maya output? There's no Device AR in mtor globals!?

I think he is saying you know the device aspect ratio and the pixel aspect ratio so you just need to work out the image aspect ratio you need to use (probably not very acurate):
image AR = Device AR / Pixel AR
= 1.778 / 1.422
= 1.267
However are you going to want to do any 2D post work? It might be better rendering with square pixels and squeezing it in 2D. Non-square pixels can cause all sorts of problems for 2D - especially if anything needs rotating. For PAL (non widescreen) we normally render at 768x576 square pixels and the n squeeze to 720x576 in 2D.

Yep, we take the image to shake for color correction. i'm little sceptical about squeezing the image in post, scaling down may not cause a problem(if it does tell me), but my problem when rendered in 720/576 with pixel AR 1 in mtor, the width was matching, it was only the height that wasn't matching, so why render in 768/576? i need clarification on this and secondly how to match the height? if i scale up the image by 1.422 points in y axis in shake maya image and mtor image matches but scaling up is screwing up my image...Desperately help needed Simon!
WILL SCALING DOWN IN POST RUIN MY IMAGE? (if it dosen't i can try increasing the height)
IS THERE ANY OTHER WAY WITHOUT GOING TO POST?

i just got a little confused with the whole thing. Simon your idea of 768/576 res is oneway of giving output to post(square pixels), but we've been following non square pixels from the beginning(i'll sit with the compositor and analyse the pros of square pixels later). i just got confused with 768 and the image AR and squeezing in post etc. 720 res and pixel ratio of 1.422 in mtor globals is just working fine matching maya output. i'll get back with a better technical problem later.....thanks to all!
