Hey I have an athlon xp 2100 +, with 1gig of ram and an msi motherboard. I currently have a sucky geforce 2 gts pro video card, I am planning to get a new machine soon but, in the meanwhile I just want to change the geforce 2 to something better. So my question is, what is the best videocard that I can get for the agp 2x port? are the more advanced 4x and 8x compatible with 2x? If so, will I loose to much of their power for making them run on a 2x ? any help will be appreciatted !!

Thanks !!

The real problem is not so much the AGP speed, but the voltage supplied to that AGP connector. AGP 2x imlpies and older spec, so it might not even provide enough juice to power the newer cards. Look in your motherboard manual for the AGP voltage and compare it to the specs on various newer cards until you find something that will work.

If I had to guess, I'd say go for a GF4 Ti4600. I use to own one and it was an upgrade from a GF2 as well so yeah it's a big enough improvement.

thanks for the info, I will check the voltage. One more thing, do you know the equivalent of a GF4 Ti4600 from ATI ?? Im asking this because I bet they have a lower price for equivalent performance??

thank you again.

Do you need open gl(3d animation/modeling)? If so then you may not really want a ati card. The cards from ati are known for bad open gl performance, especially the older boards.
