I think it is great as it is. Adding color to it though, I think you need to redesign it a little. (This is just my opinion) But you have a lot of black that is still going to overpower your colors. So I will give you a recommendation, but it might be a pain in the butt.

select the pieces to color, the tounge for example, and color it a solid color. Then you can take the black ink outlines of just the tounge and overlay them into the tounges color, on a seperate layer use overlay options, or fading, or make it a dark red, instead of black.

Good work.

Your first attempt is pretty good, though. Sorry I had tried to post a little while ago, but the server was too busy.

I draw with a black bic pen so most of my drawings are pretty dark (hate pencils) thanx for the critiques on the tounge, I wasn't happy with the way it looked. i'll play around with it a bit, see what i can do!

I think that dmcgrath was suggesting that you do what you did to the tongue to your whole drawing. It would give you a chance to add more detail and depth to the piece...if that's what you're looking for.
By the way, who is the guy in your avatar?

wildsheep got it right, I really meant the whole character. You have some really nice details going on there and I would hate for you to lose it. I mentioned the tounge specifically, becaus I really like it.

I'll give you a pic here to show what I mean. The quality is bad, I used your jpeg for this and did it quickly, but I hope you'll catch what I mean. I took just the tounge detail, raised the contrast on the layer and deleted the white with an alpha channel. Then I layered it over the red of the tounge, and modified the layer as an overlay. It was quick and there is no shading or anything, but it's your picture so that is your job.

:P
