Is there anything you guys are excited about coming out at NAB? This is the thread to talk about it!

Panasonic AG-HVX200
the camera will shoot: "HD/SD multi-format: 1080/60i, 1080/24p, 1080/30p, 720/60p, 720/24p, 720/30p, 480/60i, 480/24p, 480/30p; and multi-codec: DVCPRO HD, DVCPRO 50, DVCPRO, DV

It seems this is the DVX100a new BIG brother. This would compete with cameras such as Sony's Z1U.

with no tape option, and tiny 4gb P2 modules for recording at 1700.00 each.

I want to be enthusiastic, but...........

size will increase and price will come down, besides, you're not supposed to archive with it. It's obviously not for everyone. I do know the P2 format has taken off with alot of TV stations, there's a cost for all thats good.

Who said anything about archiving with it?

Bottom line, great it's HD. Camera is under 10k. That means it's 9995.00

1700.00 for a single P2 module is extremely expensive. That puts the camera and the ability to use it out of reach of the majority of people who read this forum.

For 1700.00, you can buy about 284 of the high quality Mini DV tapes for the DVX100.

True.

And they won't sell nearly as many as they did of the DVX100 series. And with Sony having a HD camera for half that cost, Panasonic is going to have some hard competition.

Panasonic released info that the camera will still have the ability to use mini-dv tapes, but i'm assuming it's just for standard def. To shoot hi-def, a p2 card will be needed.

Here's the link.

Yep. Not for HD. P2 isn't going to cut it for many people. 4 minutes of video isn't a lot. And if you are on a day long shoot on location the amount of extra gear you will be required to carry just to get my is going to be absolutely excessive.

or you have to buy like 10 P2's at 1700 each to get through the day.

On a more positive note, those nice expensive Firestore recorders are apparently going to be available for it when the camera is released. That bit of news was the only reason I am still considering the Panasonic.

Hi!
Does anyone of you know how good the quality is you get from these kind of camera? How about compression when using HD and one of these cards? And how does it compete against the Sony HDV based camera. Does the Panasonic produce better quality and perhaps less compression artefacts?

I attended a Panasonic workshop where they showed around the memory modules and the cam a while ago and it should have the ability to play MiniDV-tapes...

worldofmaya, yes, because it's not recording to tape, it uses the DVC PROHD codec, which allows 4:2:2 color sampling (great for greenscreen or bluescreen keys) Sony, JVC, and Canon will have to compress heavily to fit on the MiniDV tape. Because Panasonic is going to memory, they can make the files whatever size they want, only limit is space. The DVC PRO HD codec also lets you choose your bitrate to some degree.

Check out the link from my last post to get the facts.

another question I have is how fast it will be to actually transfer to the computer over firewire? USB2? If it is normal tranfer rate, you could have a laptop and transfer your P2 card in a minute and continue recording. Since I have shot quite a bit of 16mm, pausing to reload, or transfer during a shoot doesnt seem like that big of deal. Im still interested.

I would guess it will be using the 1394, not 1394b.

Since the camera turned out to be cheaper than I expected, I'll probably pop for 2 of the P2 cards and a laptop on location. When Panasonic sdaid the camera would be under 10k, that is usually industry speak for being 9995.00 I wasn't expecting 6k.

A firestore would be nice though.

Yes, very good news about the price. However, apparently it seems B&H didn't get the memo.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=381410&is=REG

Maybe they assumed $9,999.95 like the rest of us to be sure they didn't underprice it themselves.
