Title: Red Hope Canyon
Name: Will Mcdonald
Country: United States
Software: Maya, Photoshop
Hi there all, this is my first image post here on CGTalk - this image of mine is a project piece I just finished for a matte painting class I am currently enrolled in. I used a combination of Maya and Photoshop - the clouds, which were my main focus - were done completely in 3D fluids in Maya. The canyons were done in 3D, as well as UV textured - then the fog, lighting touchups, as well as other atmosphereic effects were done in Photoshop. C+C most welcome.

The clouds seem very cool, but they don't really look like clouds that much. They look cool! just not realistic. Also the landscape is extremely dark (too dark).
Keep practicing! those clouds must have taken forever to render!

Like previously said, I would work on the lighting so that you can actually see the canyon. It's kinda hard to say much more since we can't really see most of the image.

there's something strange on the clouds in deed, although they really seems cool
do you know anything about tutorials for making clouds in 3dsmax? i really need to learn. tried somethings with particles but seemed more like a soft rock, besides, they render very slow

Looks promising. Like everyone else siad lighint up the floor and make more of a contrast between the to as seprate entities. It reminds me more of blood cells gathering together. Still very promising. Break the horizon line it almost looks like you took the blur or smudge tool in photoshop and where the mountains and the clouds meet blured and smudged them together. Try and give it a little more compostion its hard to see everything in it, cause you don't really have it set up to lead the eye. Good work can't wait to see more.
