I think that Todd Lockwood is a good candidate. He's a former artist of Wizards of the Coast (the creators of Dungoens and Dragons), and now he works as a freelance artist doing things such as book covers (he makes the cover art for most of R.A. Salvatore's new books). He now does most of his work digitally, so I think he has a lot to offer to the community.

His website is www.toddlockwood.com (http://www.toddlockwood.com)

There seems to be alot of film animators and artists on Meet the Artists so it'd be nice to see some more representation from games. I know there was one with Mayan Escalante which was great, and I think I remember an EA concept artist doing one (sorry, I forget the name), but it'd be nice to see some more game stuff. Here's some ideas...

Victor Antonov (http://www.vulkanbros.com/webpage.swf) - Art director and concept artist at Valve.
Justin Thavirat (http://www.jessecollier.com/Friends/Archived%20Sites/Justin%27s%20Portfolio/) - Lead Artist at Blizzard.
Samwise Didier (http://sonsofthestorm.com/gallery_samwise.html#header) - Famed Blizzard Concept Artist.
Fumito Ueda (http://www.mobygames.com/developer/sheet/view/developerId,54313/) - Project Director and Lead Artist/Animator on ICO and Shadow of the Colossus at Sony (not sure if he speaks English though).
Alex Drouin (http://www.mobygames.com/developer/sheet/view/developerId,115124/) - Animation Lead on Prince of Persia series at UBISoft Montreal.

Martin L'Heureux would be awesome. He's been in the industry for over 13 years. He worked for ILM as a supervising animator and now he's working in Vancouver, Canada. He has accumulated over 20 credits for commercials, feature films, television and video games. He owns two companies right now. One of his companies has just released a whole bunch of motion reference dvds for animators. The site for that is at www.pom.tv (http://www.pom.tv) and there is also a link there to learn more about him http://www.pom.tv/founder.html

He was teaching at the Art Institute of Vancouver. Now he visits different schools and companies doing seminars around Vancouver. He is credited for Phantom Menace, Men In Black 2, he's done pepsi and pillsbury commercials. It's awesome. He's been awarded a Clio award, an AICP/Moma Award and an Anicomm Award.

Ryan Church
Scott Robertson
(Even if I repeat any entry which has already been made by other posters) .
I think all of them have good qualities in different fields of work.

McCyig is a brilliant "Story Artist" as well as with "Pen and Paper".
Church has a amazing style and his understanding of mood and composition is awsome.
Robertson is one of the best designers (look at the DVD's and you know what I mean) and I think he can simplify difficult subjects like perspective. (again see the DVD's :) )
Ok I would appreciate it if one of them can be won for a FAQ here.

I didn't read all early posts, but who I'd like to see here Hayao Miyazaki, from japanese Studio Ghibli. He's one of most respected directors/writers of animation movies today, and has a long list of impressive and incredibly well made animations features, like Spirited Away (Oscar Winner), Howl's Moving Castle (that much problably will be indicated to Oscar too), Princess Mononoke and many others. He has a wonderful background, and problably many diferent points of view about animation, since Studio Ghibli is one of last studios in world to resist of 3D advent, and is mostly dedicated to produce fine art movies. It would be interesting to know his thoughts. Or from some other important member from Studio Ghibli.

CGTalk is a big and very respected forum with a large amount of professional and important people as members. Guys like Meats Meyer, Zac Petrok, Carlos Baena and Linda Bergkist are world-famous artists, and they passed by here. Are you underestimating the forum? I see no reason to think a important director couldn't decide share with us a little bit of their experience. And after all we are just making suggestions, this is not something that deserves crits. hehe, no idea but rigging might not be such a great idea anyway. i think rigging will be way to technical so the artist will have to write complex and long answers. he might take his life sometimes during those weeks. but if someone is up to it, it sounds good to me.

oy everyone!
some time ago a young french artist invited members of cgtalk to take a look at his work. he has been asked over and over to produce a tutorial or explain his working process but sadly he could never find the time to do so.
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=164118
he has been featured in stash magazine #14 and his annecy contribution is well known amongst independent animators as well.

therefor i would like to ask you to give hervé trouillet aka. jubeii the chance to reach even more people and finally find the time to help those who wish so.

maybe flash, photoshop, combustion and after effects are not the most popular softwares in here but adapting good working habits and getting to know how you can produce 1min/month on your own can definitely be helpful to anyone.

thank you. m

I think that an interview with Jeremy Engleman would be great. This guy has been an influence for me ever since I saw his work in the game Riven: The Sequel to Myst. Not only is he a wonderful artist, but he is also a very nice guy who has been helping the community and teaching others through his dvd series for Gnomon. He has an excellent texture collection, and wears really cool sunglasses ;)

Personally I feel that he has never really received the praise that he deserves.

Cheers,

This is a request for a structure change to the "Meet the Artist" forum. It's a nice idea and all of the artists participating have been top-notch. What's agonizing is the amount of "Your (sic) awesome" or "I'll never be as good as you" posts. These are okay in and of themselves, but they reach a point of ridiculousness when there's 15 pages of them.

It would be a lot more enlightening to have people post their questions up to some pre-determined cut-off time, then let the artist pick the questions they want to answer. It would help keep the artists' responses interesting and people still get to ask questions, but it would save the artist from having to acknowledge every single "Great work, man!" post. It would also let the artist spend more of their valuable time answering more interesting or relevant questions.

and if he make CG Elements for his works and if he do these what pakage he use to and some

Hey Guys, am still pretty new here but I think some great additions to the Meet The Artists would be Michael Mckinley and Dan Ablan. They have helped me with their books, and I've spoken to each of them over the last month or so, and they've been great in responding to my specific inquiries. They're both established artists:

Michael Mckinley: Established Artist at Gizmondo Studios in TX, Author of best selling, The Game Artist's Guide To Maya and his up and coming book on Animation in the gaming industry. He's also well known in the SimplyMaya community for his DVD Training and no stranger to our very own, CGTalk Community.

Dan Ablan: What can we say about this guy? He's the guy who 'wrote the book' on Lightwave. Continuing his famous series of Inside Lightwave with his newest, Inside Lightwave 9, and The Official Guide To Luxology Modo. He also has been running his own company, AGA Digital Studios, Inc. for over 11 years now, with such clients as NASA, United Airlines, Allstate Insurance and many more. And, let's not forget his Training DVDs from 3DGarage, recommended by Newtek themselves.

I'll add more suggestions later on, but now it's time to celebrate the New Year with my loved ones, take care everyone. Happy New Year!

rigging's not that indepth technical wise really, not like our answers would fill an entire dictionary or something ;)

however if people are interested I'd like to throw out a few names of some friends and people who I think would have lots to offer aspiring riggers:

paul thuriot - assoc cg supervisor @ EA (previously Hellboy et al)
erick miller - technical director @ Sony Imageworks (too many films to list heh)
jason schleifer - animator @ PDI (i know he was featured as an animator but he is an awesome TD as well)
matt leishman - character td @ rhythm & hues (did setup work on Narnia, really cool guy)
judd simantov - character td @ naughty dog (creator of cgmuscle.com)
Raffaele Fragapane - technical director @ rising sun pictures (he's just a machine... can't really say much else to describe him)

all these guys have an insane amount of knowledge to bring to the table and share from the TD realm of things.

I'd really love to have Todd Vaziri (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0891445/) featured. He is such a brilliant compositor, who still really loves Adobe After Effects (unless lots of 'other professionals' say that AE is only a kidtoy ;) ). Besides that he is very good and that he has very interesting methods, he seems to be very nice/gentle too (in the video about Van Helsing compositing that was features a year ago, or so). :)

Kevin Mannens,
I think his kind of cool man, an expert in MEL, I would like to see him here in Q&A.
"Gnomon Workshop" edit 3 DVD titles about MEL, with him has instructor and it would be interesting to heard a word from Kevin.

Here is a short description of his bio, from "Gnomon" web page:

" Kevin Mannens, a Belgian native, originally pursued an academic career at the University of Leuven, where he received his MA in philosophy. ...worked three years at the Alias|Wavefront (AW) European Support Centre as an application engineer. Traveling around Europe, Kevin worked with and trained AW clients such as Moving Picture Company, Double Negative, CFC, Cinesite and many more. Wanting a warmer climate and new professional challenges, Kevin moved to Manila, in the Philippines, for a job as Technical Director at ImagineAsia. ...He is currently Technical Director at The Mill in London. I'd like to see a Q&A with Francisco A. Cortina, and NOT just because he's the only one of the three from d'Artiste: Character Modeling that hasn't had an MTA session.

In addition to the basic questions, I think his experience working for Japanese game giant Square would provide a great deal of insight into dealing with cultural gaps, and his early learning experience would both provide a good deal of insight into how far 3D applications have come, as well as give tips on how to motivate oneself to learn applications without relying on formal classes.

I just saw this thread, so sorry if this is only 3D, but as far as a GREAT artist, one I would love to read about, is Mark Fredrickson. For those who don't know of this incredible illustrator, he started out as an airbrush illustrator, back when that was considered the technical side of the trade. When you see his work, at first, you may think, oh yeah, I have seen this style alot, but he is the originator of it, all others are either inspired by or copy his style.

Anyway, he has since gave up on the airbrush, even though he gave instructional seminars that people paid big bucks to get in on, and went completely digital. So, why do I think he would be a fantastic interview? Because, his style from the airbrush days, are replicated beautifully with his digital art. So it would be great to hear about this transition.

Take a look at his work,

Well i know he's currently the lead character artist at Blizzard, so i assume he modeled & textured the main character and the marine suit. the environment looked like his style as well as far as the mechanical modeling and textures. He hasn't updated his website recently, so i don't know how much he did on the cinematic, but the majority of the modeling & textures definitly seem to have his style. check out his site: http://www.fausto3d.com/home.html

John Knoll!!

I also agree with John Knoll. He's one of the Godfathers of the digital art industry.

yes i agree with you and thank you very much,by the way, this is wangxing from china

Martin Krol, Wiro, Martin Krol, Robert Chang, Martin Krol, Enayla, Martin Krol.

Oh yeah... Ambient Whisper would be a good one too.

*edit* forgot details:

I think Martin should be featured here because his modeling talent surpasses most of anything I've seen. The man has knowledge of just about every 3D app there is. He posts all over this place and adds his pearls of wisdom and on the same note you can see that as advanced as he is... he's still learning... he's just like the majority of the people here that ar trying to increase their knowledge.

His Site (http://ambient-whisper.cgcommunity.com/)

I like Wiro for much of the same reasons.

Lunatique and Enayla (whom I see you already have on the schedule) are very much the same for more traditional styles of art. They really try to help out where and whenever possible and it's really fun to watch them as they learn stuff here on CGTalk as well like Lunatique's Topology studies or Linda's dabbling in animation (kickin it southpark style) in the Sketch of the day forum.

sorry for being all fan boy... but these people represent (to me) the best of what the CGTalk community is about. Sharing the knowledge and having a good time doing it.

Roger Kupelian. He is a very inspirational matte painter, who I believe has also been involved with compositing and concept art. Great work though, and the invisible artists often dont get enough credit. Loads of industry experience that i know I would love to tap in to, and im sure other people would greatly benefit from too.

It's a funny thing to say it, but... I think it's *original*.

Why everyone who posts here, asks for "great" artists who've worked on Box Office movies?

Why wouldn't one post to ask for an unknown artist? But, of course, good enough.

I agree it would be really really cool to see anyone from the animation/lightning department of this movie. the animation was so spectacular.

I would love to see the following people:

Robert Chang
Linda Bergvist
Love them both for their same kind of painting technique

I second Marko Djurdjevic for his insperation to all concept artists

Nicolas Bouvier for his nice scientific paintings

Steven Stahlberg 3D artist who does nice designs: mostly woman with some sort of emotion involved

Most of them can be found here at cg society and as for the rest that i'm not sure of

Nicolas Bouvier www.sparth.com
Marko Djurdjevic: I don't have anything solid about him except that his website will be up soon or something like that
