The Damned - I have a feeling a lot of us thought "pinochio" the second we read the title. :p

btw, nice job jud. Love the lighting. Simple, but very effective.

Anyway, here's mine:

Painter, 30 min.

Still haven't calibrated this monitor at all yet, so I'm sure the colors are going to look way off. Oh well. I'm going off of no sleep, only staying awake thanks to an unhealthy dose of coffee, so chances are the colors would be way off anyway. http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/grin.gif

Hey!
Crit time:
Switchstance: Good colors, but just think-- brighter lights make darker shadows.

Jud: That guy looks so sad! Poor fella. BTW: Do you find the volito good? Where did you get it? Can you buy them in Ireland? Tell me all! The cheapest & nearest I can find them is on a german website.

FiYog: Arr! A rim light would look really good on your pirate. Swab these rim lights, me hearties!

The Damned: Your stuff has been getting better since you started out here, I can tell! Your pinocchio is really good, great lighting & composition, only crit is that parts of the arms look too light. If that's the only crit I have, you know it's good....Keep up the good work:bounce:

Plagiarism: I really like your pic, reflections are cool. Just give him a little glint in the eye...

Vormav: Ouch. Sure looks painful. Not sure what the wooden thing is though?

Here's mine. PS 7. Medion tablet from aldi... hoping to upgrade before too long. Any suggestions for a relatively cheap but hardworking tablet would be invaluable. I heard the volito is good, but the intuos even better. I want to keep pushing my art so....suggestions, please.

You can buy the volito 1 in PC world in liffey valley, they also sell graphire 3 tablets, the volito is only 50 or 60 euro, I love using it so much I have gone and spent 60 euro on the volito 2, which has a much nicer pen, the size of the tablet does not really bother me and the pressure sensitivity works well, the volito 2 you can only get on wacom's website, but PC world have the volito 1 in stock and graphire and they have them in stock for a good few month's....so get one!!
Ohhh love the image paperclip..very dark..woooooo....

Thanks for the feedback -Vormav-, you too paperclip.

Vormav: Ouch. Sure looks painful. Not sure what the wooden thing is though?
Just a random block of wood. :p
I guess the idea was to show that the hand was as strong as the wood, and so in a sense could be thought to be "made of wood"...? Heh, guess that doesn't really work, since the breaking wood would imply that the hand is stronger than the wood... http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/banghead.gif

Paperclip: Nice ambient light and 'slimy' feeling... :)

Well - here's mine really quick sketch, 20min, OpenCanvas.
Oh, and a piece of movie dialogue first:

BEDEVERE: So, why do witches burn?
VILLAGER: B--... 'cause they're made of... wood?
[...]
BEDEVERE: So, how do we tell whether she is made of wood?
VILLAGER: Build a bridge out of her.

The Damned - a classic, was about to go for him as well - love those hands
Plagiarism - really nice - good lightning and texture...
paperclip - wow - very good and evil - great highlights and eyes to - how long did it take? and is that wood? :)
Her0d - hehe thats good, wish it had colors...

was making some brushes for an other project and this was made, about 1- 2 hour (not sure) in PS/wacom
maybe to trashy but damn that wood texture was hard to paint! - who the hell came up with this topic... :scream:

paperclip - Funny, but I just heard a few hours ago of a Volito that couldn't take it's owner inspiration and started breaking apart, had to be kept in one piece with tape!:D

Such good work in here!:applause:

Man, I miss the DSG!

04-05-2005, 01:21 AM
Daw, great textures! What sort of brushes did you use?

Mine took about 40 mins. Glad you liked it!! It's an evil tree....cheesy I know but I started thinking about snow white and the scene in the forest- terrified me when I was a kid. So, here's another, more evil, version.. :p

Sonianotred: I think this is a sign. I am not meant to have a volito. How about an intuos? They sound really good, but I would have to pull out my credit card and splash out A LOT. Is it worth it? What do you think?

I love everyone's pics so far. This DSG is certainly a good way to keep your creative buds blossoming.

zero2zillion thanks - yeah a little maybe but nothing I had in mind while making it.

paperclip - sorry about me being so narrow minded , yes I remember those trees hehe...
I made some own brushes for the vegetation and many different ones for both the tree and
overall lighting maps it worked out pretty fine and I used all sorts of layer modes...
but to be honest it's not the way I wanted it to look in the first place so therefor I see it as a
failure but I learned a lot by it anyway...

gordonm - thanks

Chris Murdock - I really like that one very original hehe...

element5 - great idea - only thing would be the composition feels a bit to tight... nice reflections!

Robertt - love the colors and the texture like the eye feel as well...

sketch3d and DanVL - welcome and hope you contribute in coming topics

great work everyone!!!

I mut do less lurking, and more artwork. Unfortunately, my first post is this Power Rangers reject villian. Oh well, it's a start.

http://jebas.no-ip.info/%7Ejeff/art/Made_of_Wood.jpeg

This is a scanned pencil sketch. I believe that it took me about three hours. There were a lot of starts and stops. (Draw, get the kids bathed, draw, cook dinner, draw, get some sleep, draw, get the baby up, draw, make breakfast, and finish the drawing.) I was going to add some color, but did not have the time.

SWITCHSTANCE - Loving the mood. How did you get the light rays? brush or lighting (http://69.42.87.218/cgi-bin/ezlclk.fcgi?id=9272) effects?

JUD - Really like the lit wood. Looks v.impressive. Poor little guy.

FIYOG - That idea was second on my list. He looks v.proud of his leg too, lol.

PLAGIARISM - Very wood like. You've made it look chiselled too. You use wind?

VORMAV - Nice idea! Only real comment would be that the blood looks v.thick. Keep it up tho.

BUSHIDO001 - Lovely colours. A very contrivecial subject but well done.

PAPERCLIP - I really like it, the white lines work so well for you. Wish I could get the knack of it. (Thanks for the crit, I sort of saw it too but was late on so didnt correct it.

HEROD - Love (http://69.42.87.214/cgi-bin/ezlclk.fcgi?id=9759) the film and the sketch. Thats what I want from mine. (Arthur: 'A duck'..... Bedevere: 'Who are you who are so wise in the ways of science?')

DAW: thanks for the comment. I sort of thought the hands were a bit blurry tho. How did you get that style, its a wicked picture. (Like that tree in Zelda, lol)

GORDONM - Cheers. Glad you clocked who it was. (Thats a good sign (http://69.42.87.218/cgi-bin/ezlclk.fcgi?id=9384) for me)

CHRIS MURDOCK - Sod drinking that, lol. Nice glass (http://69.42.87.218/cgi-bin/ezlclk.fcgi?id=9324) and wood grain.

ELEMENT5 - Awesome style. Really enjoying all you art lately. Really good effect but still looks loose. V. Impressed.

SKETCH3D - Really like this. Has a very nice feel to it. Good one.

ROBERTT - Sod being in that ship... Bottom section of the water (http://69.42.87.218/cgi-bin/ezlclk.fcgi?id=9374) looks really like oil paints, what did you use?

DANVL - Nice sense of movement. Good job.

KALORLO - Very brooding. Just one question. Are they rays of light coming through?

ITSGUIDO - Awesome sketch. Very subtle colouring but really well executed. (Studied it for a while).

JEBAS - Very Wizard of Oz. Would like to see the colour version if you have time, lol.

HOPE I HAVENT LEFT ANYONE OUT. GOOD JOB (http://69.42.87.214/cgi-bin/ezlclk.fcgi?id=9152) EVERYONE. NOW I'M OFF. PHEW.....

PLAGIARISM - Very wood like. You've made it look chiselled too. You use wind?

I mostly used the standard round hardedged brushes to paint the light/dark areas and added a quite transparent wood texture on top (in burn mode, if i remeber correctly).
