After a few days of brainstorming, I've finally came up with an idea i liked. when i first saw the competition's guidlines, i knew i wanted something from the fantasy genere and i knoew i wanted something with extream scales (meanning that 1 would be very small comparing to the other).
"He who controls the magical gem, can control the mighty sappiroth".
the idea here is to have a mighty beast controlled by the mind control gem stuck it it's head.
this is just a general idea concept and i might change things in it along the way.

here's an early progress of the head modeling.
i've tried to keep the topology clean and simple before i go into the finer details. the jaw needs some remaking.
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/7197/7197_1112738991_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/7197/7197_1112738991_large.jpg)
stil pretty early on the head, more shaping up slowly, keeping the topology orginized so that it'll be easy to add up details later on. also, added the mind control cristal attached to it's head.

had a few more hours today to detail him up a bit. hope i'll have more time tonight.

It's shaping up nicely already! One thing you did not mention was wether the creature is ok about being controlled. Will he like it or hate it? Otherwise, your idea looks promising so far! I am looking forward to seeing it come further:thumbsup:

congrats on entering the challenge.. your concept is a really cool concept man.. the beast heads is looking great already. A nice snake tongue would fit that character nicely.. Crocs jaws, snakes tongue, you know... your on the right track.. good luck
thnx guys.
i will work on making the relationship between them clearer later on.
the beast is mind controlled by the power of the cristal. it doesnt like it but it is forced to it's master's will.
and yeah, i'm planning on adding a snake tounge by tomorrow.

worked on the mouth, tweaked a few things and started to work on the part of it's body that will be visible until it's hidden by the first cliff.
here's some more modeling progress.

Interesting concept, i am looking for updates of your work
Good beginning:thumbsup:
ok, i think i am allmost done modeling the head part now.
http://www.zivcg.com/temp/d92.jpg
i'll take a little break from modeling it and work on a better version of the concept. the first was just the general plan. i'll now work on something with a better composition and more specific to how the final image will be like.

Hi zman, some really good steps so far:thumbsup: You've started to add a real element of danger to the dragon...I like your concept too, it's got a lot of potential
Keep it coming
slight update on the concept, stil the same concept but i think the composition is better like this http://www.zivcg.com/temp/sketch2.jpg
ok, i plan on finishing with the modeling of the creature's head by tomorrow, what do u guys think of it ?

here's a test i made with path deform, to make sure things will go as i planned.
gave it some quick materials and lighting setup for some tests.
here's one of the renders.
I'll UVmap it tomorrow, wont be too easy with all the fins and details.

Thats one heck of a serpant,....wouldnt want him after me!
I see later you will increase the specularity.
Great stuff!
ok, i've decided to go further with the sence of scale and make the master much smaller in the frame.
he'll be standing at the top of a long cliff with spiral stone stairs that lead to a sorta podium.
Since this project is for print resolution i've decided to divide the whole project to 3 parts(memory considerations) - forground with the cliff and master in it, midground with the snake's head and close part of the body and the backround cave.
i made a quick lightining setup (i know its currently too dark) with a fast photoshop touchups of the midground and this is what i got(stil need to work on the creature's texture). i'll work tomorrow on the front cliff.
(sorry for the flat sketch, its just to show my general idea)
http://www.zivcg.com/temp/newconcept.jpg
started working on the cliff that the master will be standing on the top of.
http://www.zivcg.com/temp/cliff4.jpg
had some progress on the cliff.
testing it with the midground layer and they dont seem to be fitting.
not sure, but i guess its because of the camera angle, will look into that tomorrow.
what do u ppl think of it so far ? (nothing there is final, xcpt for the general idea)

yah, as I was looking through your progress, the only crit I had was to make the room have more scale and depth, but by the end you had already done it. So anyways great work so far!

Ok, i got all the BASIC stuff modeled (xcpt for the master) and got all the 3 scenes set up (backround, midground and forground as can be seen clearly). I am posting this as the lighting milestone because its the closest thing to being done currently. I've compositted a rendering of each scene quickly (i know it currently looks "layered") to checkout the composition and I'm pretty happy with how it curretly looks like.
now for the real challenge - making it look good at print resolution(which is about 350% bigger than this :|

been a while since i had some time to work on this project.
i got all the basics set, now its time to work on the full (print)resolution details, which requires me to take a different aproach on this whole scene, especially with the texture of the creature. the backround is the easiest part with this issue because its blurred. here\'s how part of it looks like in less than 25% of the final resolution.
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/7197/7197_1114909437_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/7197/7197_1114909437_large.jpg)
remade the serpant's texture so it'll fit the high resolution better. here's a close up on it's head.

The whole idea of this piece is to show how a giant creature is controlled by a (relatively small) human, therefore the human doesnt take a big part of the frame and doesnt need as much detail as the creature. Here's what i got on him so far, I will stil add more details to him and fix up the while area.
this is a crop of the full resolution.

here's what i got so far.
everything is composited togheter. I stil got work left on everything basicly, but from this point i'll add render it and add it in with photoshop.

Damned ! I didn't saw this work before. I really like your prportion and the composition of the picture. My only crit would be that the color of the rock is too near to the color of the dragon to distinguish them.

made some more tweaks on the serpant texture to make it less uniform and make it contrast a bit more from it\'s surroundings, yet i stil wanted to sort of \"blend\" with the envierment as snakes often do.
also added some finer details (some barely show in this resolution).

... and make it contrast a bit more from it\'s surroundings, yet i stil wanted to sort of \"blend\" with the envierment as snakes often do....
It may be blending a bit too much for the sake of the composition. you could try subtly lighting the pillar behind the head with a coloured spotlight that doesn't hit the snake-dragon. It doesn't have to be much, just enough to give the rock a slightly different tint.
Nice work.
i'll give the front pilar some more work then, maybe i'll just shadow it more where the serpant is close to it (i cant change it's color too much cause it needs to match the backround).

I think this looks fantastic. Indeed, very Tolkien (even the wand of the wizard).
In my opinion your logic is fine: Blending is what serpents do. I woulnd't change the background or the serpent too much. It is possible that just by adding one or two lights, or by enlarging one that you already have (such as the white intense light) you could differenciate the snake from the background, without loosing realism.
One small crit: the head is awesome and very rich in detail, but the body (which appears in the foreground lower right corner) seems a little empty, and doesn't have the scales you would expect in a serpent. Did you have to reduce the scales for resolution reasons?
Great job, otherwise, in my opinion one of the best in this challenge.
fer
Did you have to reduce the scales for resolution reasons?
yes, I had to completly change my original texturing due to the high resolution of this final image.
Great job, otherwise, in my opinion one of the best in this challenge.
thnx alot man

done working on the front "spiral" cliff and the wizzard. now its time for final rendering and last touchups/colorcorrections.

here's my progress with photoshop. I've decided this image requires more color variation to contrast the main elements from the secondary.

Hello zman, just found your entry and am amazed with it. Beautiful work!!
Sorry to give you a crit so late in the game but I moticed the cape of the master is a little stiff. Maybe, flow it a little more... it should conform to the shape of the rock. The serpent looks awesome.
I wish you luck :)

thnx for the kind words
Cregar - as for the cape, I know it could use more folds, but i couldnt make it have folds and show the icons on it right so i've decided to keep it like this.
