Title: Little Beast
Name: Farkas Ekho Zsolt
Country: Hungary
Software: LightWave 3D, Photoshop

Hello!

This is my first submisson here:the little beast.
Why i chose an iguana?Well the challenge. It has a very-very complex "skin" and i wanted to Make it real-looking.The texture is FULLY handpainted with digipad.(yes, all of the squamas painted one after another)The igauana has 2 main maps ,the fore part (head, neck, and the first legs) and the back part (body, tail, legs). And of course: diffuse, bump, spec.etc maps.
So please share your opinion with me,how could i improve my little beast(and my skills).

This is a really great image... It looks so real!!!
I've seen iguana and thought about how I would make it in 3D and here it is...
Great job...

I am not sure if it needs to be more bumpy.. It looks good but some areas looks too smooth...
If you did enough research to do this, I might be wrong :p
The tree would look so much better with actual broken and falling apart pieces...
It looks like it's a cylinder with bumpmap on... I would make actual pieces seperately to make it even more believable...

Great job indeed u've done!!!

Wow, you crazy masochist. Nice work.

Great work and excellent texturing !

How did you achieve the Depth of Field ? It looks a little strange in the foreground almost as if you're looking through crackled glass. If it's a post render effect maybe the grain is a little too large ? Also some of the bark might look a little flat.

Deservedly frontpage work though - nicely done.

Amazing texturing there, I almost tought it was a photograph
I love iguanas. Very Good job, you really deserved that front page

Really good. I've got an Iguana in the other room and the accuracy of the texture on this guy is striking (all those little nuances are there :applause: ). The only crit I have is that the 'grout' is a bit too dark, especially on the main body. Can you post a view of the whole model?

If that textures are hand painted you must be insane :D I had one of those animals but she unfortunatelly died few months ago, great pets anyway and great render !

Wouldn't it be easier to head to local exotic pet store and take a photo? ;) Inspiring texture work!.. how 'bout a wire or step-by-step?

Where did you take that foto? ;)

Never seen before an image like this. 10 stars !!

WhiteRabbitObj
04-05-2005, 01:16 AM
Really good.

My only crit is that I've never seen an iguana that is that green throughout, especially one that old. Little babies are bright green but adults get to be some green mixed with a lot of grey/orange/black and sometimes even blue.

Here's a photo I took of my pet iguana, Rebok, last time I was home, for aged color reference.

http://www.rit.edu/%7Emjd6897/rebok.jpg

His eardrums should be golden in color too, you've got them green at the moment.

However... fantastic job, this is really beautiful. I only wish we could see other angles, did you model the rest or only from one angle like the wireframe seems to suggest?

Great stuff. Really makes me miss my pet and friend.

04-05-2005, 01:17 AM
Very nice work ... I love iguanas and I own one too (already third one).... I think, that ur texture could be little bit more bumpy and there is a couple of mistakes in lower and rear part of the head on your texture ... anyways, these detail can catch up only person who sees iguana every day ;)
I started modeling iguana too, couple of days ago and I would be really happy if my render will be as good as yours.

Keep up ur good work

here is one of pics of my little fella I will use as reference:

Thanx a lot again!

Iguana007: ohh what a cute "beast":)

I will make a new render in a different POV!(side maybe?)

WhiteRabbitObj
04-05-2005, 01:36 AM
I'd love to see a side POV myself. I think it's sad that your render looks better than my photograph! Not the iguana (insults to my iguana are fightin' words! :) ) but composition and all.

Now THAT'S FREAK'N COOL!

I must say that that is one of the best pieces images of an animal that I've seen yet. Very vibrant, detail oriented, and right on the money.

A great work and one to be very proud of.

BTW Great to see that LW has been used. What were/are your stats for the image, rendertime, etc.?

http://www.manhattan.k12.ca.us/staff/speters/iguana.jpgI love this render! Someone mentioned the iguanas coloring was off. A lot of iguanas are a very brilliant green, often lime green ie; blue tailed iguana. I think a lot more variation in colors around the face of the iguana would be more realistic, such as blues, yellows, reds, silver, etc. Regardless of the coloring, the scale placement and bump look perfect to me, as well as the negative space between scales. Even specular highlights on the scales look individual and accurate in a lot of instances. All perfection.

The iguana is missing all the spines down it's back.

Immature iguana don't have a lot or any spines down their backs but the skull structure of an immature iquana is much more stout or stubby. The skull structure of this iguana seems to be slender, more mature. Looks naked without spines/IMO.

beautiful work! Makes me miss Costa Rica!

This is a really great job bro, this was the most real picture i ever seen in 3D.

But i got to say something... There's something wrong with the focus... if im not wrong, all the parts up to the first leg are perfect, but if you look down and compare it , it seems like you missed that part, it seems that you putted the same focus lengh as the trees on the background. I think that you should put the focus lengh the nearest possible you can.

Well that's it. Good work, and i wish you present more of your work here!

Congratulations!@!!

And I wonder why you don't use MAXON Body Paint 3D for painting textures, and you don't have to work hard on UV.

You are definitely a great artist, you must have trained very hard to have acomplished that, do you think an artistic education could help anyone, I mean do I really need talent to do something like that?, or do you think I could learn the tricks of realism on the way?, this is a question to everybody also, if anyone wants to answer.

This is very professional work, my friend. I'm at a loss to offer any suggestions on anything. Your hand-painted textures are absolutely superb. I can only assume you do this professionally. If not, then someone is missing out on an extremely talented individual. My studio would certainly be interested in your efforts, should you decide you wanted to do this as a source of income. Keep up the great work.

Really fantastic effort, there are so many aspects of this image that are super hi quality.

My only crit is that the skin looks too young for such an old creature and the back looks a bit bare without the horns that usually run along the spine. (I used to keep one as a pet).

It's clear that you have texturing well under control and your modelling skill is unquestionable.

Keep it up.

 This is just gorgeous! It looks so much like a photograph. The field of view adds a great effect to the image. Really helps makes it look real.

I've actually used this picture to WOW people with what's capable on a PC.

Kudos to you!

great work, the iguana is very real, I can't beleve it's made in 3D.
Yet I don't like the background very much, I think it has to much blur
I think you had lack of time or else it would be perfect.
Keep on working, that's a hell of a 3D

Can you explain a bit the technique you used to paint all the scrammbles on the reptile?
Cause I think you´d had to developed a technique. You could may do a little tutorial.

FIrst off, I agree with the other posts re: the impressiveness of the render, especially the texture. And especially since this is your first psted image :)

The only improvement I can suggest is that the background seems too "pixilated", as tho' it might have been a small original image blown up to fill the background. It doesn't do justice to the Critter ;) !

OTOH that's merely my opinion, which is based upon the fact that I'm *generally* not a big fan of the "distance effect"/distance blur - although it mimics photography, it isn't how I personally/physically perceive the world. So my comment is just "FWLIW" (for what little it's worth) :)

All in all, tho', a very nice render.

The sharpness in the middle and the blurry background is very apealing to me.
Amazing what people are able to establish. Thanks a lot.http://forums.cgsociety.org/newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=2127396#

Hey Farkas -- really impressed! Very interesting perspectve -- now I know what squamas are, too. Would also agree with this "maybe the reflection of the squama is not enough"...and would love to know more about your painting technique too.

Congratulations, wonderful work!

This is just the real thing.
The skin is just stretches and folds so accurately.
I love the blur effect.
You can even see the neck muscles in its neck!
