Martin Krol has entered the Master and Servant 2D.

Challenge Page (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/masterandservant/view_entries.php?challenger=7193)

Latest Update: Coloring WIP: Colouring Continued
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/8/7193/7193_1113164705_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/8/7193/7193_1113164705_large.jpg)

moving on with colours. I copied the colour layer that was being overlaid, over the shaded image. and then duplicated it again to give the image a bit more of a contrasty look. ( adjusted the layer intensity though because it was a bit much. )

I also added a texture overlay ( at 5% intensity )to the image for now. im not sure if ill keep it util the end of the process. for now though, i used it because the image needed some breakups over areas that had clean shading.

on the outline layer i ended up lassoing the left eye ( our left ), then i cut it and pasted onto another layer. that way i could adjust the position of the eye easily, and merge back down to the outline layer. I do this process a lot when re-adjusting things around. Sometimes ill use liquify too.

this is the first successful concept image for this challenge. i had a few images that were just playing around with a number of ideas but this is the first one that got a bit closer to what i intended to do.

Update.

There is still no real title for this piece but i think its time i explained a little about the picture

The premise of this image is about the spiritual mind/body relationship. The mans inner demons cant live without him, but at the same time in order for the man to keep his sanity, he must do his inner demons destructive bidding. creating a master/s and servant relationship of sorts.

the updates are still small because im trying to think about things that the image could use, as well as looking for useful references/inspiration.

ive moved onto the lighting. the lines from the sketch, and shading were getting in the way though, so i decided to redo the line work. this way there will be no shading from the pencil work/smudging that will get in the way when it comes time to light the image. sorry about the jpeg quality, but the jpeg format isnt too happy with images that have a lot of contrasty parts ( wireframes/linework ). i had to use a low quality :/

continuing with the line loose line work.

i keep working on the lines. for the pants i took a picture of a model weaking jeans in the same position as my man in this picture. it will help me light the whole dealio too. i feel that i will need to look for hand references because that one angels hand isnt really turning out. as well as the womans hand.

So I have been working on the lighting and colouring a bunch only to find that the composition doesnt really work because some sections need more umpf. in particular the lower left of the image. i was thinking to cover it up a little with another angel but that would get rid of the knife in his hand so that was a no go. i also tilted the picture about 10 degrees cloclwise because the main character looked like he was falling back. it just makes the image a little more interesting now. another thing i did was lower the mans head a bit because it was sticking out too much and made him look like a giraffe.

in the end i think i will just leave the composition looking how it is in this picture. but nothing is set in stone yet.

Hello. I am very impressed with the story you are trying to tell. I am a philosopher myself. Not quite sure if you are right about master/servant relationships between man and his deamons. You see every person, every human mind and soul consists of... well let's call them a deamon and angels (black/white, good/bad). No one can exist without them. The relationships between them are struggle, opposiotion not master/servant. Don't ypu agree.

For image... Well, nothing to critique for now. I like it. Waiting to see more.
Good luck.

P.S. Love your puppy.

yep definitely. you are right that the theme would be more of a struggle, than master and servant, but you can also have struggles within a master and servant theme. the servant doesnt always have to be willing to do its masters bidding, or the master doesnt have to be satisfied with its servants commitment/devotion to him. This would make the struggle/opposition would be more of a situation, than anything else. You can also consider the physical side of things instead. the body afterall does everything the mind tells it to do. The demons within the man try to persuade the mind what actions the body should take ( in this case the deeds are going to be destructive ). the body is just the messenger, and the casualty if anything goes wrong. the demons could be considered as masters of the mind. there wouldnt be just one master ( as the picture illustrates )

hopefully i can make some sense out of this sometime, and refine the concept.

im glad you like the doggie :). but its not mine. i found it on cgtalk after someone posted a funny pic in a thread, to make light of the situation. i liked it so 2 seconds later it was my avatar :D

cheers, and thanks for the comments. they're very much appreciated.

what's up dude,

Hmm...i'm really liking the feeling of this. it has that old classical look to it. The line sketchiness with that kind of colouring reminds me of how the old traditional masters do their studies. Very cool dude. Keep it up and goodluck. i'll be checking back.

cheers,
Archie
