Are you looking for the cracked mud effect or just plain sand? If just sand then a brownian or any fractal/procedural will do just fine in my opinion. Once you get the colour right all you need is a subtle bump map. Maybe map a ramp node to the color connection and play around with the settings. Use IPR while you tweak.
