Latest Update: Final Image: Final Render

This is going to be the final render. I think the image came out the way I wanted it. I really enjoyed doing this image and having the chance to detail the P-38 lighting.

Lockheed P-38 cockpit interior... with another one flying above and to the left. Interesting! (Grin)
Well it is a sketch of wing leader (master) and his wing man (the servent) in their P-38
Lightings during an air patrol. The eyes you see is the co pilot's reflection in the
canopy mirror scanning the sky for any threats and guarding his wing leader. I was
wanting to emphasize the eyes showing his vigilance.
I was inspired by this project while working on P-38 for Flight Sim 2004 and decided to
shelve that project and start anew with a hi-res model for this contest. I am spliting my
work between exterior and the interior and I will model the pilot and the horizon last.
After about a week of modeling I have this WIP (in the next posts) of the interior and exterior. I modeling and rendering using Truespace 5.2 uv mapping with Ultimate Unwrap 3D, with a few textures from Photoshop Elements 2.

This is the wing leader aircraft with about 23,000 faces with subsurfacing. This is just the basic smooth form with no interior or gear, as those will not show on his model.

This is outside view of interior model. Here you can see some interior parts installed and the window outlines. A few more parts have added since this screen shot was taken. I will add material colors soon to give it better dimension.

This image tests my composition arrangement. Modeling near completion on interior and exterior, and added basic material colors to interior. Added mirror where the wingman's eyes will be reflecting. Some texture should be coming soon.

Hey Kevin,
Great concept and great modeling. I'm a history buff specifically WWII. Like the concept. The balance of man and machine with the overall theme. Wish I thought of it. Will be watching this space.

This is the terrain and water plane with material colors.

Terrain and water has been textured. Water has two textures, near and far. Clouds are composited from photos taken in my yard. They were blended as layers and used cloning tool as well.

Thanks, I'm enjoying the project. I hope those following the updates are too.

Added the sun and fill lights to scene. Also adjusted light colors.

Co-Pilots P-38 and his flight suit are almost completely textured. This image also has raytracing on all metal and glass parts and some weathering effects.

This is the full rendered scene, a composite of multiple rendered layers.

This images shows the four layers I rendered to composite this scene. Each time I rendered over the last image, which was the background of the next render layer. As for post effects so far on each layer, it really only has been on the first layer's clouds. All other layers are straight renders.
I chose this method because of my PC's hardware limitations. Rendering the complete scene in one pass would have been impossible. The final layer of the interior was enough alone to cause "system resource low" warnings early on during the render. Some of the textures on the interior are 4096x4096 (with alpha transparency as well) which also slowed things down. I really can't take this image much further on this PC and still not risk a crash during rendering.

I really like your image, specially the sky and the control part of the coclipt. The only thing that doesn't seem enousgh work is your "mirror". I don't know what is supose to be, you should work on it to add more details,
keep working !

Hey Kevin!
Just watching your progress. Enviroment and planes are great. Really like the composition. The only thing letting it down is the face and wether the mirror is to scale. It seems a bit out of sorts. I wouldn't know but just thought I'd give my feedback. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Sorry for the late reply, I've been having (& still having) ISP problems. But I will look in to the mirror details, also the size of the mirror is larger than normal to show more of the pilots face. I wanted to emphasize him as an important character.
Hopefully I'll have a sample soon.
Thanks.

I have changed the pilots face, added goggles, and changed the lighting. Also changed the color hue of the image and a few more interior details.

This is going to be the final render. I think the image came out the way I wanted it. I really enjoyed doing this image and having the chance to detail the P-38 lighting.

Very cool! I had similar aircraft related ideas in my head with this contest, but no time to participate. Glad another aircraft minded person did though! :)
The cockpit is looking very neat, as is the overall rendering and compositing.
My only comments are the eyes (too cartoony) and the hand (odd shape). Otherwise, great stuff!

Cool to see another entry with real fighter planes. I like the way this looks. The feeling of realism thru artwork is neat. Your clouds are great.
I can't make out what that jagged metalic thing is above the yellow cowling on the engine though...seems like part of the wing? Or a reflection thru the canopy glass?
I'd like to see the finished plane from the top, too. I'm checking out your site.
I tried fighter planes, in my 2d Master and Servant.
My style has a touch of fantasy and I'm wondering if I should try pure realism next.
Sorry for the late reply, I have very little time for my forum visits. But I appreciate all of your comments. All of the critiques were very useful, such as the mirror and face construction. They really added to the image, thanks.
As for the top of the P-38, it is the same as in my modeling milestone. To save on time, I didn't put much effort there. Good job on your 2d fighter entry and all the other contestants, and best of luck in the contest to everyone!
