View Full Version : 50 GFLOPS co-processor
rendermania 04-03-2005, 07:14 PM no idea if this thing can be utilized for rendering, but the tech spec does sound quite sweet...

Yes, it does support animation and rendering applications:

the only issue would be getting the various renderers to write for it... Think it'll be more likely for one of the big boys (mental ray/Renderman) to write for a more available co-processor like the cell.

This sounds a lot like the idea of the Cell setup, but this has 2 differences... the memory is expandable to a whopping 2GB per PE, and the memory controller is not as advanced as on teh Cell. I see this as a very similar approach, but instead of implementing custom interconnects as on the Cell, this uses the systems PCI bus. That could be a big problem, or it might not matter, depending on how much traffic the bus sees. But, I want a couple now :) . Wonder how much they want for these things. Would be great to offload renders onto 4 PE's.
