I am starting an Architectural office and have come up with the configuration below for a dekstop.....This machine will be use for creating and rendering and animation....

Dual XEON DP 3.4GHz, 1MB cache, 800MHz FSB2GB DDR2-400 ECC (2 DIMMS)NVIDIA Quadro FX 3400 256MB G-DDR374GB 10,000rpm Serial ATA 8MB Cache System Drive + 250GB 7,200rpm Serial ATA 8MB Cache Storage DriveCDRW/DVD Combo Drive 48x24x48x16x (with Nero software)16x Dual Layer DVD±RW Writer (with Nero software)
If anyone thinks I need to change specs. I would greatly appreciate.I am also thinking of a laptop...could use some help in that area as well, so far I have looked at Fujitsui(expenssive).....dell and hp (affordale) I do think that 1280x800 on a 15.4" screen is too big......I also am leaning toward the X-Brite/Trye Bright type of screens...

Sounds like a winner to me. I don't forsee any problems with it. That config is very similar to the boxx workstations that we use, except ours are a couple of years older. I can't stress the importance of "lot's and lot's of memory" especially if your going to be doing any mental ray rendering. We only have 1GB at work, and I have 2GB at home, and it really does make a difference.

Thanks for your input....I am probably going to get the best I can right now,
?-Do you think I should go for dual Xeon or Opetron

?-Do you suggest keeping future room for having dual Dual NVIDIA Quadro FX 3400 capabilities, as I am for sure going to get NVIDIA Quadro FX 3400 for now

Which software are you planning to utilize on the new hardware? Sometimes this make a difference the the hardware you choose.

The config your talking about seems very nice.

I'd go for the Dual Opteron. Why? The Tyan K8WE.

It sports two PCIe x16 slots (SLI) and the ability to use AMD's dual core opterons which should be appearing towards the end of the month. And with Windows X64 to be realeased at about the same time, things should be good. Not to mention the board is loaded with more features than most anything out there..

2 gigabit nic's
USB 2.0 (i forget how many ports.. but there are at least 4 on the back panel and probably a few more in the form of headers on the motherboard)
Firewire
4 SATA II connections (backwards compatable with SATA I) Too bad they didnt put connections for the other 4 SATA II connections on the chipset, that would have been nice.
SCSI Ultra 320 (on the more expencive version of the board)
Nvidia's active armor, and any drive raid support
NUMA
Opteron's superior multi CPU design
Dual Core ready
Two FULL speed PCIe x16 slots (not the crappy 8x by 8x found on other motherboards, not that this brings much performance to the table with the current generation of video cards and software ;))

There's probably more to list, but im getting lazy, and I'm sure you get the point :)

the softwares i currently use , are 3dMAX, Maya, Rhino, AutoCAD and of course all Adobe programs + Flash.........what I really need is a computer that will be capable of letting me produce work in the form of renders and animations...right now i have a P4-3.06MHz, with 256 nVidia fraphics card and 1G ram..it is a vaio.

I want to get a 3dlab 200 Realism video card, but I am leaning towards NVIDIA Quadro FX 4400 512MB G-DDR.....Which one is better for my nature of work-Architecture???

Do you recommend BOXX....
I can spend no more than $4,500...everything included..
I definatley want to get dual monitors...I am thinking of
--DoubleSight DS-1700 / Dual 17-Inch / 2560 x 1024 / Black LCD Monitor

With all that awesome hardware, I'd seriously consider using a raid storage setup, either internal or external, for storage and access.

As for running dual FX 3400's...I'm not certain if SLI support is available for them. The cards have to be able to use it...I would check first.

I do know that the Fire GL's from ATI support running in parallel. I traded my FX in for a Fire GL a couple of years back due to some Open GL issues...have had NO problems with the ATI.

Quadro 4400 is SLI capable. However, the drivers have not yet been released, my guess is cuz they want to work out the bugs, and are waiting for software support..

Like I said, there's no support for it. Thus you wont see any gain at the moment. But I'm sure that eventually there will be...

Well no support in the way of 3D apps. Games are the only ones at the moment that can benifit. And it REALLY helps out in that area..
