View Full Version : Transfomers to be directed by Michael Bay

The director who brought you Armageddon and Pearl Harbor is rumored to be helming the adventures of Optimus Prime and the Autobots. At least we know the budget will be huge and the explosions will look impressive!

I'm no Bay supporter either, but how hard can it be to make a decent Transformers movie?
But then again, it shouldn't have been hard to make a good Resident Evil movie.

If they stick to the spirit of the (original) Transformers (instead of being lured by the spirit of merchandising) then we'll see a kick ass Transformers movie. Its got all the ingredients to give us something we've never see before, to quote a famous movie :)

Heh, as retarded as all his movies are (to me at least), he makes great LOOKING movies, and he might do well with this..all the big poses, endless slow mo, spinning cameras around characters, cheesy overwrought dramatic moments ("Autobots, Transform!" "It's over, Prime!")..it might exactly capture the flavor of the original stuff, and it'll definitely look beautiful and slick. It is too bad it couldn't end up in the hands of someone who'd give a little more of a twist and a goose to it though for the now-grown-up people who grew up with it. But that's just IMO, we'll see.
But will the soundtrack be modern hip hop videoed out or cheesy glam rock? He goes both ways.
"You got the TOUCH! You got the POOWWWEEERRRRR.....YEAH!"

I'm actually okay with Michael Bay directing, this movie should play to his strengths. On a technical level, the man definitely knows how to shoot a good looking movie, and he knows how to direct kinetic action sequences. He also knows how to shot a PG movie without making it feel like a PG movie. His major shortcomings to me are that he doesn't know how handle emotional and dialogue heavy scenes consistently, but lets face it, Transformers isn't that type of movie. They've basically gauranteed that if nothing else, you will see a good popcorn flick, and with the exception of Steven Speilberg, the other rumored directors were far worse.

It really is amazing just how much he blows the grading curve, isn't it? Ed Wood is suddenly crowded up next to Orson Welles. :scream:
P.S. It really could be an april fool's joke, but I'd swear I heard the transformers movie connected with Bay at some point in the past..whatever the case ends up being, I'm glad he's off Superman, though it's sad Singer had to leave X3 to someone else in order to do Supes.

From what I hear, it seems that many of us think taht we could do a better job directing than this guy. Well, I'm not gonna dispute that as it may be the case.
My question is, Why do these people get jobs if they suck so much? People always say that Hollywood screws things coz they put money first but a truly well made movie (like spiderman) surely makes more money than a dodgy movie like Alien VS Predator.
Is there anyone who can provide the logic behind these seemingly irrational decisions? Is it simply a lack of good directors?
In any case, I think this movie will be made well. Pearl harbor and Armaggeddon were pretty good films. Nothing Oscar-winning but definetly good films.

Dude! Bad Boys ROCKED, Armaggedon had Liv Taylor, and Pearl Harbor was definitely entertaining! Im all for this one!
you know its just going to be mindless eye candy. If you want deeper meaning, read Niechze, dont look for it in a transformers movie.

I remember in magazine Bay boosted how he made the car chase scene in SF in The Rock so much quicker and better than any director.
Man, I got a headache looking at that car chase scene with MTV speed edits. This guy's ego is jerkier than the way he edits his movies.

Rent the super cool collecters edition of Armagedon and listen to the comentary. Michael Bay must think he is a god or something he is just so happy with that movie and he will talk all about why it's perfect. intercut with him are different recording sessions with Bruce Willis when he isn't asleep and Ben Afleck who keeps making fun of Michael Bay. It's great! Afleck at one point asks why you couldn't train astronauts to be drillers when you can train drillers to be astronauts, and the rest of the time he is makeing fun of the movie.
That said, I think this might actually fit his movie style. Big explosions, minimal dialogue and he can really cut together a splashy fun-movie well. Although I don't know if I need to see a transformers movie after watching the episode of Robot Chicken where Optimus Prime gets prostate cancer. Absolutly briliant, I can't remember when I laughed so hard.

You see I never said anything about wanting it to be deep or philosophical, although that would be pretty cool, but I would however like to at least be able to tell whats happening on screen as I watch the movie. Michael Bay is one of the quickest cutting, MTV editing, what the hell's even going on directors to ever make a film, and its just plain annoying to watch his movies. The Rock was alright I'll give him that one, not good enough to own, but was worth a second viewing. Armaggedon, and Bad Boys are awful though, and Pearl Harbor was one of the worst movies I've seen in a while. "I think World War II has just begun." Yup all those years when America wasnt involved don't count. Give me a freakin' break, it was predictable cheese piled on top of more predictable cheese with choppy editing and bland acting. Michael Bay has done nothing to further cinema and everything to ruin it. He's like the Elvis Presley of Film. Ruining a beatiful art form, stealing the spotlight from true "Kings" and being adored by the general public for it.

Who cares if Transformers were created in Japan? What does that have to do with anything. The Toyota Camry was technically created in Japan. The Honda Civic was technically created in Japan as well. Whether you like to admit, both are nice reliable vehicles. Fact of the matter is, do some research. You will come to find out that almost 75-90% of what makes these cars up is NOT in Japan. Most of the parts are fabricated in the USA as well as many other countries. So does that mean they're bad cars? No ... Hence, because the Transformers were created in Japan doesn't mean the fact that if the movie was done in the states its going to be a crappy movie. I think its the vision behind the camera that is what could make this a crappy movie.

First of all, Im a still a student, but a student who just got hired onto the X's over at Nickelodeon, so your right no movies yet, but a pretty cool TV show none the less. Also the last time I checked, box office numbers do not mirror good film making. Go on over to boxofficemojo.com and take a look at the top box office's of all time, its disturbing. I dont know maybe its just me, but integrity plays a huge roll in my work. I'd much rather be making my own films, or working under someone who knows how to make a film, and have that film go no where, then work for some disgrace to the industry and have that movie make millions at the box office. I guess thats just me though. Oh and I did give him credit for ruining modern cinema isnt that enough credit?
P.S. no need to flame its just an opinion.

People see countless movie like dreamcatcher, dare devil, electra, the pacifier, XXX, fast and the furious, torque, and the list can go on to the thousands. Yet, we never hear why those directors are ruining cinema. You hear Bay's name because his are usually a guilty pleasure, popcorn, but entertaining.
I don't get it, I mean, rob bowman keeps get to keep making crap, Paul Anderson gets to keep making crap. I thought AVP was utter crap, or better yet, anything he has done is utter crap. But Bay is ruining cinema??? screw that

I think most people have issues with Pearl Harbour because of its playing down of a REAL war story to facilitate a love story.
Still, as it was the love story was done well.
Bad Boys was great stuff, funny. Transformers needs that comical element somewhat. Bad Boys 2 had its moments but nothing like the first. The action was big but NOTHING like we're expecting from a Transformers movie. Just dont go too crazy with the human/love element. Dont desaturate the raw emotions of Optimus Prime for a love story between Spike and Carly. WE WANT TO SEE THE TRANSFORMERS CARE, JOKE, LAUGH,..and of course PISSED OFF.
Let the audience indulge in their robot fetishes, don't half step, we want to see amazing technology, these are a highly advanced alien race, don't take that away from the mythology. This is far beyond Star Trek the Next Generation. Technology and evolution are the same thing for this species' 9 MILLION YEAR LONG WAR. Thats a long time to evolve passed humans. A LONG TIME.
Don't forget each character had its own special abilities. Use the TECH SPECS as a BIBLE. The tech specs were the foundation of both comic AND cartoon. Know that the cartoon fans make up a larger portion of your audience than the comic fans but still give nods to the comic.
Most of all,.. DONT **** IT UP.

I never ever said it was gonna be a crappy movie. I am very well aware that many Japanese cars are assembled in the States.
All I was commenting on was the fact that some movies wave the stars and stripes in your face and it can be annoying. Not that I'm unpatriotic, but if it happens in the case of Transformers, it would be noticeable that it's happening in a movie where the characters are derived from a toyline of a foreign country.

Honestly, with all the US bashing id like to see some flag waving.
But thats just me, i'm a minority in that opinion.
Still, Hasbro which is an american company, made the toys and television series popular. Takara made the japenese version popular in japan. So when they want to make a Japanese version i'm sure theyll do the same.

If you don't like a particular director, fine, but don't go posting that "they are ruining cinema", or "why further their cause", them are just nasty things to say!. The day that a group of people come to you and say, here's $100 million, make us a movie of this most popular franchise, then I'll take your coments objectively. Ya know, I never really liked Optimus Prime. He was too much of a goody-good for my taste back when I was 9. I'm glad Megatron beat his @$$.
Regarding Team America: I had almost forgotten that one of it's many objects of ridicule were the directing style of the likes of Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer. All those lapses of continuity, quick cuts and....ehem...MONTAGES!

I might not know an awful lot about Transformers G1 but I'd like to see what the people who are making it are going to do, don't forget that although the director directs how its done, the writers are the people who actually well write it, I hope they don't go on to push their opinion of what the transformers are like and that they should relate back to the original series and the views that came across then. Then again I'm not to sure on all this I've only seen season one after all.
