hi,
if you have to model a cell phone, what would you prefer to use, nurbs or polys...
thanks

polys, without any hesitation, preferably mayas subd.

nurbs is pretty outdated.

It really depends on what tools are avaiable to you (Max, Maya, Rhino, XSI ...) what is your goal and what will be the final use (and of course what you feel the more comfortable using).
Everything mechanical (like a cell phone) is a good candidat for nurbs and if you master a tool like rhino you can get very good results. Now, if you're good at modeling using poly you can most probably reach the same result but depending on your skill it might be harder.

The right tool is always the one you master the best I think :)

Another vote for Polys/subD's. The ability to crease/uncrease edges is great.

Nurbs are fun and easy, (to me!) but you polys are good too! Abraham is right, depends on your app, polys are easy for this task since you are going to be pulling some faces

If you're modeling just for visuals (e.g. print, commercials, movies, games, etc.) go with polys. If you're modeling for manufacture (e.g. product design) you HAVE to go with NURBS. If you really want accuracy, NURBS/splines are the only game in town (poly's can't even come close without exhorbitantly high polycounts). Those who think NURBS are outdated need to wake up.

.. Or some who just need to learn how to handle Maya SubD :]

Bah. For industrial designv and manufacture, Maya subD is a joke. Or why is it they still have Studio Tools? Do your research before posting stupid replies.

I would start with nurbs to get the proper shape/proportions and then convert to polys to add some more details and finally convert to subds for final adjustments/details.

This workflow is fast and works great, at least for me.

hmm, thanks guys for your replies......i am using luxology's modo... i model for commercials. but i feel its very difficult task to model such things in subds compare to using nurbs.

Maya's subD's do suffer, and can get extremly slow, but if you know how to use them properly they're great. Other programs subD's are definitly better but for me at least they make the modeling process a lot quicker when I do use Maya.
