Hi Everyone,
To all Silo users, we've released the Silo 1.4 beta to registered users on our forums (http://www.silo3d.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=13). True to our past history, this upgrade is quite significant despite the small increase in number. Silo now has selection highlighting, multi-select mode, a snapping manipulator, enhanced split tool, faster interaction with subdivision surfaces, greatly improved topology brush accuracy, more prettiness in general (edge blending), and more. Registered users can download the beta for Mac or PC now at silo3d.com. Or you can always just buy Silo now and start with the beta immediately ;).

You have an excellent modeler. You listen to the people who bought the software. You constantly add what people want and follow through. You keep people informed. Best $109 for software I've ever spent. It's also getting better with each release. I can't say enough about it. Excellent.

Silo seems like a great deal. I haven't bought it because I think the XSI modeler is pretty wonderful.

Wonder why there is a Modo forum and no Silo forum?

Wonder why there is a Modo forum and no Silo forum?

That is because the more money you charge for your software, the more serious it's being taken as a 'professional' software. I've seen free software outdoing software that is pretty expensive, yet lots of people seems to crowd towards the expensive ones.
That's just human nature I guess. It's expensive so it must be good.

Just my perspective.

I believe cgtalk charges commercial entities for a forum (whereas free tools apparently get a forum if they are widely enough used such as Blender and Wings).

I don't see why we would need a forum on cgtalk since the one over at silo3d.com is just fine.

I think it's way better having one central speaking forum, seems to work for now at least.

How is the topology brush in 1.4?
I read in the Silo Forums that in the 1.3 its performance was spotty. Any information here would be greatly appreciated.

no, CGTalk opens and closes forums SOLELY according to user demand and track records of successes/letdowns.

the ONLY thing you have to pay for on CGTalk is banner space if you want to advertise on it.

The 1.4 relaese is great, but there are some bugs or something like that:

-When i select faces i do not see the "point" in the middle and
when i select more faces they have the same color as the object.
- how can i disable that when i select edges that he do not add the edges ( when i go to mouse setup and i choose select thru new, then its the same)

hope you understand my english ;)

Keep in mind that this isn't an official release. It's a public BETA. Bugs are still being worked on.

With that said, these new features are fantastic. I'm in love.

Silo is damn good for its price point . .Infact its price performance ratio is un beatable for any software in any category.

I for one officially wish to register a vote for a sperate section for silo in the cg talk forums. the sheer traffic in here will ensure more people will become aware of this little powerhouse.

What is the product activation like on Silo? Do you have to connect to the net? I am thinking of getting a copy and wont pirate it or anything but I hate having to connect to the net for software as sometimes I am off line. Email authentication is fine for me.

Once you place your order you will recieve the authorization code via email from the Nevercenter team. They're usually pretty quick about it but since they're hard at work fixing bugs in 1.4 give them a little time if you don't get it right away. :)

I might be wrong but maybe there's no Silo forum simply because they already have a great one at nevercenter.com, no need to reinvent the wheel and split the community. And maybe the Silo guy and his users never asked Cgtalk to get a forum.

What about Syntheyes? Now THAT program is unbeatable for its price-performance ratio! :D

When you move the mouse/pen over a vertex/face/edge, it will highlight it in a different color and select it automatically - then you just click-move the mouse and it will move the selected object. It just speeds things up (a lot).

Also in 1.4 - there is Multimode selection. That means you can select a vertex/edge/face without having to first choose which mode - you can select any of them at any time and just go. This is the best part of the 1.4 update in my opinion.

Silo is not authenticated over the net - you just enter a serial number they send. Plus, you can install it on your PC and laptop with the same #, and you also get dual licenses - one for a PC, one for a Mac, so if for some reason you have both, you can use your copy of Silo on both.

I played with Silo a while back and it seemed pretty darned decent as an organic modeler. I just wanted to ask: Is it good for mechanical modelling (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=132060&highlight=ferion), too?

Man, It's been hard to kick the LightWave habit for me too. I've been using it for 13 years now (Christ! has it been that long?!!) I've had no problem dumping Layout for Maya or Max but I still haven't been able to find a modeler to replace LightWave. I've tried Modo but there's just something I don't like about it. I can't quite put my finger on it. I'm sure a lot has to do with the fact that I've been using it for so long so I'm just used to it.

The two things that LightWave has that I can't live without:
- Rotate and scale from the mouse position. This is one thing that no other modeler seems to want to touch yet I use it all the time. Grab some points, click where you want them to rotate from and drag to rotate. I just can't get the hang of moving your pivot to some place, and then rotating... Then you've got to move it again if you want to rotate from some other place. Sheesh! ;)

- True (at least in my opinion) Symmetrical modeling. Alright, Modo, Wings and Z-Brush do this the right way too. Everything you do happens on the other side of the model. It just works and it works the right way. I just can't understand why other apps can't seem to get it right. Symmetry modifiers or maps just don't cut it for me.

I'd love to see these features in Silo.

Oh yeah... Whatever happened to Silo handling delta morphs like in LightWave?

This is very easy in XSI, although an extra step is needed but itīs a fast one :)

Simply pressing Alt+ Ctrl you place the pivot where you want it, sure not as fast as having the mouse already where you want, but doesnīt bother me much....now the Symmetry in XSI...grrrrrrr :p
