Has anyone tried the free public beta of mentalray for maya 4.5 yet?

Cheers

Yes, here's what I wrote in a similar thread in o the news forum:

"Yup, I'm loving it. Feels much more a part of the program now. And the render region ability is a great touch. I'm excited to try out the custom MR shaders within Maya now too. The area light shape references really help as well.

But has anyone else noticed that GI and FG calculate a bit slower now than with Maya 4? Might just be that this is still a beta."

is it like... a trial demo?

is it going to disable itself? =(

Yep - thats they're way of making sure you get interested in paying for a full seat of MR, and help them work out the bugs in the meantime. Local resellers in my area tell me it'll probably cost $2000 when its released, but you never know it might more/less :)

Quote from their website:
"..Licensed users of Maya 4.5 can make use of this exciting offer for the duration of the public beta period. These temporary licenses will terminate when Alias|Wavefront officially releases mental ray for Maya 1.5..."

But Mental Images, who is working on this with A|W, are notoriously slow releasing ANYTHING. I think it will be at least 6 months before the final version is released.

I ended up disabling the beta because, like the last version of MR for Maya, there's a good chance that your Undo queue will get hosed.
I don't know how many times I've had the plug-in installed and then have to go back and undo three or four times only to find out that it goes back once and then just keeps showing me the same MR for Maya function. Very frustrating.
Also, I'd like a way to quickly purge all of the attributes MR for Maya inserts. Currently, if I want to disassociate a file from MR for Maya, I have to convert it to ASCII and then do a search for all of the MR lines. Tiresome.
