Well, I told you I am terrific at textures. It is going to take some time to have something nice :-).
I have tweked the lights a bit, but I'm not happy with the result, so I'll come back to the previous version, with more energy in the environnment lighting

Woups, an error on the first reply, I'm quite good, today :-)

Actually, I've already been able to work on it a little. But I won't post the design and research drawings: I don't have a scanner.
I'm not sure I will be able to go to the end, but here is the idea: a templar knight, comming back from a "pacification" mission, offers his weapon to his god in a church. The templar will be severly wounded.
I don't have a big computer, and only wings to model. I think I will try Blender for the textures.
So dont expect me to add any detail to the not visible parts.
I've done some parts of it:

and how I plan to set up the scene:

I've just made a test with the composition, with some lighting test.
I think I'm going to keep something like this.
I've added both hands, a shoe (the other shoe is hidden).
There has been some problems for the import fram wings to blender, so some details don't appear.
Next step: the textures, and add some props (chairs in the church, his helmet on one of these chairs), and then I'll have to think about the hair and how to do them.

very very very cool idea:thumbsup: youve got some very good ligthing ideas, but i think you may need to tweak it a little before the final image, there is something ther that is missing that i cant put a finger on. . . . .
also, the modelling looks very good, but i saw one thing that looked a little weird and that was the nose, you have some weird topology on the edges of the nose, where the nose curls around and makes the hole for the nostril.. .
good luck with the rest of the contest

Thanks for the help.
I do agree with you, there is something strange in the picture. Maybe by turning the camera, or cheating a little, I could make the cross aligned with the border of the picture.
I'll try to modify the nose this evening, try to see what is wrong with it. It hatge doing noses, they are not square :-).
I'm sorry not to comment your threads, folks, but I don't have internet all day long, and I have no computer (using the one from my company). So it is a bit difficult for me to see what happens on other threads

Hello there, you have a very interesting concept and your models looks great, I especially like how you worked on his facial features. Also I like the light set-up that you are going for very much. You might want to re-submit your images though since for the challenge you will need to upload them to CGTalk, just go to Submit Entry (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/masterandservant/submit_entry.php) and log in with your username and password.

I changed the camera a bit. This way, the cross is not biased too much, and there is a better view on tyhe knight.
I will move the camera just a bit closer in order to leave more space to the knight and have the cross only in the corner.

Ok, I update the camera. I don't know how, but the light moved a bit. I prefered how it was just before: aligned with the sword. In the props added: chairs and the helmet.

awesome composition. Just a thought... Mabey place his helmet at his feet... to give the sense that mabey he's just on his way in or out of battle and took a short pause to give thanks or pray for protection.... just a thought..

Hey Vincent,
You have a nice image going, I almost chose something very similar to this, going with something a little different than this though. I like the compostition of the image , great job so far.

I agree, the composition on this is awesome. The way the cross builds a frame around the character like that is very aesthetic.

Nice Idea, I will try like this. I don't know yet where exactly I could place the helmet. Right or left side? I'm going to look at this this evening

I just had a look at it: Nice! I like it. And I wish I had your texturing skills. Unfortunately, I am very bad at texturing.
Alan Daniels: Thanks. I'll try to keep the picture getting better and better by not scapping everything with awfull textures :-)
I think I'm going to harden the main light a bit, just to have some nice speculars on the steel :-)

My first test of shader: the chainmail
I admit it is not perfect, but it is really the first time I can do such a nice texture. Il really gives me the will to go further.

hey im back:) i really like your new camera angle, it works very well. .. good work
the texture is looking good, but it needs some work, especially if your going to be seeing a lose up of it in the final image.
hope to see some more updates, and a smoothed version of the man.

Eh, thanks. I just went on your thread, and I love your idea.
I agree on the fact that the texture will need a lot of tweaking, but this is a good start, I still have to add dirt on the chainmail.

I've been able to launch a render this night with everything smoothed, and my chainmail texture. Well, I am really happy with it: My first hand painted texture works quite well.
Next step: the dress. Then I will have to work on the church itself, I think.
I will add dirt only at the end. So there will be a clean and a dirty version of the scene

I think I'll have to add some folds on the left arm. Here, it looks much too straight.
Maybe move the helmet a little, To make it catch a bit more light.
The main light is a bit too hard now, I will lower it.
I will also turn the hand to make the back of it face more the camera. It is supposed to be a wounded hand, an so it should be totaly relaxed.
I'm open to any other comment

Hey Vincent ,
One other comment on your image so far. It looks like the knight is almost holding onto a railing of some sort. The Sword is balanced to perfectly, I think the handle should be tilted slightly up. Also I think the hand should bend down at the wrist to show the weight of the sword. Good job so far.

I moved a bit the helmet and added some color to the light. It's supposed to happen late in the afternoon.
thanks for your comments, it motivates me to go further and finish this piece (the first piece I would finish one !!)
Zethriel: Thanks. Yes, the knight could be much better. But all I'll do is add hair and some folds on the chainmail. As I don't have a good computer, this scene with just some few polys is already quite long to render. As there is almost no texture. So I'll have to tweak a lot to cheat on details.
The folds I'll add will be around the shoulder.
The uv mapping is really bad for the moment. I'll have to do that too.
... Arglll, will I have time to do that?
mmoir: right, I didn't think about that. I'll have to modify this, and thinks about on which side the sword will be. It will stay almost balanced, not perfectly, but not far form the right balance.

That's an excellent idea. Hopefully I'm not out of bounds here, but as a suggestion, I'd say you want at least enough light to make out the background clearly, as well as the front of the Knight (for now, there's a pretty heavy stripe of shadow down the middle of him). One small point light in front of him would do the trick.
Also, what's the final color scheme you're going for? Blues and greys, as in your test render shots? Or are you ultimately going to go for warmer colors?

i like where this is heading...couple of comments....the foot seems like it needs some work possibly a peice of armor or something being that the way the light is hitting it....it is giving it is own framing making it a point of interest...i would work the hwlmet or possible try some more designs..its saying tin can to me as apposed to richoiusness or holyness not sure if oyur going for a common soldier or a uniqie style..so i would say push it more toward poor avarage or high ornate soldier(does that make sense) its sort of middle of the road tight now...i think it would bring more of an emotional impact one way or another....although i really like the lighting...i would try making the light a bit smaller giving it more of that divine light effect with some volume and blurred shadows (just alittle blurring)....other than that lovin it..keep hoinj

Thanks everybody for your comments.
I just moved to Germany, that is why I couldn't post anymore. Fewer hours work here, so I should have more time to work on this. BUT the work computer is terrible. integrated graphic card, you know. So I am not really able to continue: on wings, I can't even see the selected edges, I would have to work blindfolded. As a result, I won't work on this until I get a computer with a real graphics card.
If somebody wants the scene to continue it, I can provide it. Just put what he has done in this thread, or notify me of its usage.
Cheers and see you in a couple weeks or month, I don't know

Please do continue when you get the opportunity! :) I enjoyed seeing how all this was coming along, and would like to see the final result. Even if the CG Challenge threads are closed by then, you could post it over in the "Finished Work: 3D Stills" forum.
Good luck on your move!

Thanks.
I will continue in the wip section, hopping to get an award when the piece is finished :-)
