View Full Version : Brazil Chrome Material HELP!
pongball 04-01-2005, 11:58 AM Hey all.
Im using max6.0 with Brazil, and can't get the chrome material to look right. I'm using a skylight (from the luma server), and 3 Brazil Area lights are in the scene, set on my objects.
I apply the brazil chrome, and it doesn't look like chrome when it's done. AA Samples are 2/2 by the way. Anyway, I want this brushed chrome look (not too reflective, but gunmetal type brushed chrome). So what i did for that is put the glossiness down (so that curve gets fatter), and the specularity level a bit lower too.
Is this method correct?
I also tried using "composite" in which i put brazil chrome in the first slot, and a raytracing material in the 2nd slot, and decreased #2 to 50% of the final shader. Is this alternate method correct?

no.
Sounds like you might need to get a bit more basic of an introduction as to what Brazil is doing. Perhaps check out some of the info here:
http://www.hello-napalm.com/tuts/brzl_basics.html
http://www.hello-napalm.com/tuts/brzl_shaders.html
the second link has plenty of info on the chrome shader and what to expect from it.
you talked about adjusting the specularity settings for the material, but neither skylight nor area lights will affect a material in a specular manner. read up a bit on Brazil and you should be set :)

Cap'n Panic, bless you man, you saved me, im inspired once again! I read the hello napalm site for brazil just before i posted, but never saw the shader link itself. Thanks a lot http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
EDIT: Oh DAMN you're Nathan!!! Dude, your work inspires me!! Never knew you were on Cgtalk?? http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif I feel honoured :P

I'd also recommend reading a few of the metal related tutorials here:

They may give you some insite on making chrome.

I tried Nathan's technique (thank you man!), but my white cards i place in my environment dont seem to be working on the surfaces of the chrome material for some reason. Is it because they're not close enough to the object itself? I use a lot of white cards, colour them too, and nothing shows up. They're 100% self illuminated objects in pure white. Not visible to camera, and not casting/receiving any shadows whatsoever.
3dsmax 6.0 with Brazil R/s v1.2.21 (not rio).

I'm glad you like my past work :)
just some general problem solving tips:
- try moving a white card so close to the object you are rendering that it would be impossible to NOT see it in reflections. If it still doesn't show up, then the problem is obviously not scale of the white cards.
- double-check all your visible-to-camera and visible-to-reflections properties on objects, etc to be sure that nothing is accidentally set incorrectly.
- on the chome material, be sure you don't have anything excluded from reflections, that reflection falloff is not on, and that reflections are set to raytraced as opposed to environment mapped.
- make sure there isn't anything between the reflective object and the things you want to reflect in it.
your best bet is to eliminate potential problems one at a time :)

^ Nate, bless you man. I'm getting photoreal renders here --however that wasn't my ultimate goal (ironically!). Im creating my own visual style with the help of your tutorials, thank you kindly for keeping those up to shape. I've told legions of people about your work...sick stuff.

Hey guys, just a little update:
I'm having a problem that might not be associated with chrome anymore (but maybe you can still help?). I have this .3ds model imported into 3dsmax6, which is fine and dandy. I want to subtract a box shape out of it --again, fine and dandy. I use the boolean command (used it for yrs, know how it functions, etc) and subtract the max box from the .3ds imported object, however now i can see right through the damned thing. Any simple fix for this? Thanks! :scream:
