First concept sketch. Digital sketch, the servant is stooping over his damaged possibly dead master. Both are victims of a crash.
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/7080/7080_1112342749_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/9/7080/7080_1112342749_large.jpg)
A test of colour and composition. Probably have a crashed space craft of some sort burning in the background, I want the servant to be upset at his masters death, probably tears. I'm tempted to have a child riding on the creatures shoulders, it might be more emotional that way?
crashed spaceship sound good, nice concept,i like your drawing and coloring style. that servant character looks cool. waiting to see it in 3d form... good luck.

Ok here is the servant. Stood upright for texturing and bones. I want him semi-human so I'll go for human skin and then probably alter as I go along. I have an idea to give him a very hairy lower half. Not sure though. Also like the idea of tattoos. Sort of an owned mark.

Very cool start and good modeling
I think giving him hairy legs could come out real good - a bit like a faun without the horns.
Tatoo or a burned brand would work too, nice.
keep going and best of luck for your challenge!

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the comments. I haven't got to the hairy bit yet but have mde a start on the skin texture. It's a combination of my skin... yeuch.. and textures created in photoshop. I'm starting with a base of something like human flesh and then I'll layer on the alien aspects later with bump and displacement as required. I'm swaying between goaty hairy legs and frogy like amphibian... Not sure which what do you think? Thanks again for the input.

I like the progress on the character UK3D...very close to the concept scetch. Tough call with the legs...he seems sorta simular to a rodent (its the shnoz:)) so furry legs come to mind.
Maybe give him signs of a strugle...like he had to free himself from the craft before getting to her.....or he took her out....maybe you could try putting her on his arms like he's laying her down??
I'd add little cuts probably too soon for bruises...
I'll b waitin 4 updates

Nice texturing, I like the mouth area very much. You have to start working on the other textures maps.

Here is a quick render to test the skin with bump and some small displacement. The veins were added and a few more details around the eyes. He looks like he's just had a shave but that's because I'm going to have whiskers and thin beard growing through. I'm also planning something wild with the eyebrows, like you see on seals. I'm also working on the full body map now. Still haven't decided on fur or frog but have prepared a small repeating frog skin type pattern ready to try out.
Ta Sean
3DRaven "maybe you could try putting her on his arms like he's laying her down?"
Hit the nail on the head. I've been kicking this idea about and wondered if that might be more evocative. I'll knock out a sketch to see what you think. Good idea about the scratches and bruises. Luckily I had a very ugly bruise on my arm last year and I photographed it so maybe I can use this for reference.
Ellon, I'm going to give frogy legs a go. I'll try and get a render done this weekend. Thanks for tipping the balance.
Gunilla, funny you should mention horns. I have thought about giving him some, not sure though. I definately want him to look friendly and placid not demonic.
Eyadnes I hope you still like his mouth, it's a bit bristly now..he he.
Mike, got a little stuck on his head but it is likely to be the centre of attention especially if I get the whole tear thing working. Must get back to the body.
Thanks everyone. So much to do so little time to do it in.

Beautiful texturing - I love that neck! The veins are really good. Regarding horns - I'm not sure ... perhaps tiny ones, like those on baby goats. Maybe that could be cute.
Great work, looking forward to see more

Here's a variation on the original idea. The crash landing has thrown the party into a strange land. The masters are robot humanoids the servant is a mammal hybrid. The parent robot is dead and being devoured by mechanical maggots. The servant has placed the child robot master on it's shoulders to protect it from the technology feeding maggots. I'm making a start on the child robot and have started sketching the mechanical maggots. I think there is more substance to this composition just hope I have enough time.

The rat creature is looking pretty good. Nice texturing and all. Good luck on the girl. I've got only one suggestion: maybe you should keep the girl human so that it fits the challenge requirements of one human, unless the judges accept human looking robots. Just a suggestion.

nice work, the modelling is great and has become less boxy as you progressed which is good to see. i think the veins along the nose are a bit too strong and sort of detract from the rest of it, lightening them a bit so they are less noticable would be an improvement in my opinion. great work though, im looking forwardto seeing ow it all develops

hey! its great! i loved the way u color ur sketches and the way uv textured ur servant, really nice! it seems like u know the shading, and texturing as well!
look forward to see more, good luck mate!
Hi James,
Thanks for the comments and particularly the reminder about having at least one human present. In which case the little girl will definately stay human. Means I'll have to change the narative a bit though. Probably back to a straight forward crash landing with dead parent and servant creature looking after child.
Hi Reda,
I've been working away on the creature quite a bit experimenting with different coloured textures and lengths of hair. I'll get something up in the next day or so.
Hi Gregory,
If only I had time to do more sketching. I'll get some background details done at the weekend. I have a full time job and family to keep happy in the meantime.
Hi Kieran,
I've toned down the veins and it looks more realistic, It's easy to get carried away when you have made a nice vein making brush in BodyPaint3D.
Hi Ahmadali,
Thanks for the comments, I'm worried by the deadline and so much modeling texturing and I haven't even started the background..

Here are some changes to the Servant texture. The body is now mapped from head to toe, I've made a start on the frog like texture to his arms and legs. I have also experiment on the head hair. I want him to be a friendly alien, sort of an old retainersomeone the child trusts. Oh and yes I've added the tattoo after much experimenting.

Hi UK3D, your concept has the potential to display some really fluid movement and your texturing is very cool
hello mate.. damn your model looks good. and yeah that human modeling is really tricky busines... waiting to see more... keep up an good work.
Hi Juha,
Thanks for that, I must try and get the girl model finished this weekend. Like you I've been working on the face and I'm finally getting somewhere. Can't decide whether to texture her face before doing the body....hmmm

Hey UK3D,its really great,,i have some syggestions on things uv updated, first is about tattoos,i think the tattoo which is on his front is too big and weird, but one which is one his face is very good.and about the his skin his new skin, its somhow strange to see som yellow and green skin color with those maps on his legs fading into the inner part,i like the left textured model of ur servant, more!
very nice process, keep ie up mate!

Here are some of the early child head modeling trys. The hair is just a rough trial I may even put an helmet around her before I'm finished. Tomorrow I hope to plough on with her body and maybe make a start at texturing. A couple of questions, does the head look female and young enough? I'm still tweaking and haven't combined the mirrored half yet. Ta sean

Hi UK3D, I think the head is coming along nicely, if you want her to look younger, I suggest shrinking her nose a bit and maybe plumping her cheeks a little...
Good luck!

HEY,mate! one advice, dont upload any female model without eyebrows! come one,u have put hair but no eyebrow,it influences our mind a lot!
sry,for the harsh speech!:D:thumbsup:
good luck!
Hi Robert,
You are right plump up those areas, but it's tricky. Think I might skip the ears as I'm likely to cover them with hair... hmmm not sure though. Might be nice to have the wind blowing the hair around.
Hi Smaddl,
I started out blind but quickly discovered you can't do childrenfrom memory so went out and shot my daughters...... with a camera. :) Now I know the profile is spot on but it's still tricky working face on. I shot a three quater image but getting these suckers to line up in viewports is no easy task. Still a bit more tweaking and I'll be there.
Hi Ahmadali,
Eyebrows, eyebrows? Arrrggghhh.. Oh alright i suppose I can find time for a few brows. The funny thing is my daughters are so blonde you can hardly see their eyebrows. But I think my character is going to be dark haired. Though preasure from my daughter may change that. She's convinced it's her.
Thanks all, more soon.

I agree to the lips the edges need to be pulled...same goes for the insides of the eyes they seem a bit deformed now. Don't forget to cut into the side of the head near the eyes right now the cheek bone is near non-existent. Make the nose a bit wider too (not all of it only the bone)
Work... the paid work that is, has really got in the way this week. However I'm going to put some time in this evening sorting the girls face.
.
Smaddl, Ghost, Mr Snoopy,
Ok I get the message, I need to work on the mouth and eye corners particularly, deal with the cheek bones and giver her more of a childs chin... along the way I'll try and make her more attractive too.
3DRaven special thanks to you mate for the link and suggestions. Hopefully she'll be fully formed and beautiful this time tomorrow....THEN I'm going to give her bruises and cuts break her arm and put it in a sling.... :)

She's looking better UK3D but the area near the eyes is still bugging me (the head seems too thick there) Check out the distance from your eye to the side of your head...and relax the corner of hte lips a bit and you'll have it nearly fixed :)....anyway good luck with the body modeling

Nice modeling and texturing. One crit is although her mouth is smiling her eyes are realitivley emotionless. It might be worth bring the cheeks up a bit and closing the the bottom eyelids just slightly to match the features (if you smile and look down at your own cheeks you'll see what I mean). I'm only talking very small tweak here and there but this will often have a huge impact on the expression of the character.

I liked your concept and especially your 'servent'! Talking about being creative. I would really like to see how this image comes along.
I have one small suggestion though. As I get it she is passd out/close to death/Dead. And unless the child is actually blind (might be an idea) she would naturally react to such a state of her parents. That would not really qualify as an easy to do expression.
You may witness serious difficulties applying such an expression on her when you start her off with a smile.
Other than that I would actually leave her be. She doesn't look too natural. But it really ads to the Science Fiction the whole plot offers. It seems you have pulled the head off well.
I am glad that you were reminded about the andorid bit.. but I liked the magot idea. Are you still planning on going for it in another manner?
Well I am definately tagging along your thread.
Good luck!

Ok I'm going to stop tweaking and leave the face alone. Well maybe just try a few different colours of hair, black? Blonde? Brunette? Red? White? arrggghh. The bruise bump is a displacement map so I can vary it and all the shades are on seperate layers in BodyPaint. The hair is made up of several layers of clumps. The tears are a combination of bump maps, and semi transparent polys. Any comments on the face are welcomed. Ta Sean

Hi there UK3D:bounce:
Just love her profile - really upset expression!! Now I'm also work on texturing so I pay much attention to texturing WIPs :) Don't worry - as for fresh point of view hair color is ok!
Think you need to work a bit on skin's specularity - now it seems to be too plastic or something... But in general very good work you've done! Will follow your work, mate!

great work. very expressive.
Hi 3dRaven,
I've narrowed the head width near the eyes a little so hopefully she looks right now.
Hi Virtuoso,
I ended up doing quite a bit of work on the lips first the smoothing then the downturn to make her look sad. Glad you like the update, I'm following your work too.
Hi Tremoside,
Thanks, its so easy to get carried away working on the textures, I've really got to get on with the background though i'll probably come back to the face again.
Hi Swamps,
Well hopefully you can see the work I've done in making her less cheery including theswolen bruise on her cheek..ouch.
Hi Black,
Thanks for the feedback. I've put a bit of sadness into her now though i still want her to be quite a strong character, not at all a victim more a survivor. If I don't run out of time I'll work the metal maggots in. The girl will be riding the servants shoulders and maybe hovering over a covered parent.
Hi Gunilla,
Yes I wanted her to be very pale especiially after the trauma of the crash. Must get on with the building of the space craft... then destroy it...
Hi Deryk
I'm going to have a go at subsurface scattering if I get time for the skin. Though i've never attempted this before so we'll see. Cheers.
I might put bit more colour into the skin but I was kind of aiming at blood loss and not well. I'll see how it sits in the final composition.
Hi MrSnoopy,
Felt real weird making her look beaten up after trying to make her look real. Wanted her to be sad, ill but defiant... easy eh?
Hi Neeno
I'll see how the colour works with the shadows and lighting. I have a plan for very dark smoke behind her head so the pale face really stands out. Not sure if I should beat up the servant as well.
Hi smadll,
Thanks, I'm hoping for a tear jerker in the final comp, we'll see.
Thanks to you all for your comments, it really is helping me to keep going. Finding time is quite a challenge. Knowing you're watching makes me do just a bit more each day. Chers Sean

Hi Sean,
Oh my post was before your update, I would have shut up and sit down had I known that this was coming! I had thought a start with a smile may make it more difficult...
To what you said about her. I personally think you have done a GREAT job.
What she sort of gives out is a feel of 'swallowing'. I know how crude that may come out, but it depicts the general emotion she gives out to me perfectly.
And when I add it up to what you are going for. I think your entry is going to end up to be a VERY emotional bundle all throughout. The essence of human sencativity you have given to the servants are still vivid in me. That with this girls expression added. It is all going to look awsome.
Good luck!

Where was she found the after the crash?...if outside I guess you could make her skin be slightly dirty in places... maybe a slight variation in diffuse & spec

Woow Sean.. this looks FANTASTIC.
Her feet.. the textures.. the hairs.. everything is superb. A hell of a update!
Actually with her mounted on him.. especially his snout/face seems to need a bit more noise in its epiderm. A few wrinkles for example. especially around the eyes.
I don't get what you mean about deciding on the colourzs of what she is wearing... Whats wrong with what she has on now? I think it looks great!.
And the bare feet add so much to it actually. Sort of like she did not dress up for this insident... It just happened.
Actually another thing about the servant... why didn't he get injured or brused at aby rate? Not even a scratch.
Well I am looking forward for more. This is turning out just GREAT

Don't know what happened with the multiple posts and don't know how to delete them. Oh well. The skin textures on the hand and feet are all made inside of BodyPaint but still need a bit of scruffing up. I've made the armour in such a way I can change the two tone colours into whatever I like. Perhaps I'll post a few samples of alternatives. I'll wait till I get the background into place for the final decision. The servant will end up even hairier by the end I suspect and then I'll mess him up post crash.

A few minor changes to the model and much more hair, switched to grey hair to create a contrast with the background. The harnes added not sure whether to go with leather or shiney material.

Here's a start on the scene test lighting.

So much still left to do so little tim to do it. I've started the rendering now. Got the background coming together and part of the foreground. Need some tall grass or weeds in there if I get time.

Looking good Sean. I haven't been past here for a while, sorry about that. Great progress since I've been here, looks like your almost finished. Hope you make it on time, just keep going:bounce:  .

Just a few more details to pick out but this is pretty much the final comp. There are four main renders with additional renders for the hair on the servant and then on the master. The grass is part of the main body render. I render many variants on colour especially for the girls body armour, in the end i wwent for high visual and a strong contrast. The post effects are minimal, just a tweak here and there for brightness and contrast. Hope you like the image let me know if you see any last minute tweaks before the final submission tomorrow.

Hi Sean, I lurked around here regularly and just thought I should say that the final image looks great:thumbsup: I've enjoyed watching you put this together...Cheers;)
Cheers Snoopy and Daddymac,
It's been a bit of a rush at the end but I'm all but there now. Hope to get the finished image loaded up tonight. The hardest part has been finding the time. The image is a compramise between what I wanted to achieve and what time permitted. Still got there in the end.

very nice finish UK, the servant and background are especially impressive. its good to see that you were willing to compose the image in a fairly unconventional way. good luck

UK3D, congratulations with final image!
Drama - yes - it's here!
Actually I have doubts about those two portraits on top but from other hand it looks like cinema poster, thus makes sense.
Very good modelling and texturing you've created.
Great image - wish you the best with it, mate!

I remember the first head model that I was thinking you would have a hard time giving an expression to.. and now this!
Boy have you proven that you know what you are doing.
The girl AND her expression lok fantastic.. I especially LOVE her feet! (Wait that didn't come out right did it now?)
Your mutant servant creation was a good catch and overcome fantastically.
The time was an issue to most of our personal prefference on how the entry should be submitted.. but you have little to worry about in that area.. your entry looks great as it is here.
So little to say but to wish you the best of luck with your entry Sean! I hope you get the best out f it!

Hi UK3D,finally,u did it...thats a very cool image...great!
Hi Madlight,
Thanks for that, yes finally got there and during a hell of an active work period. For a while there I nearly had to stop. I would have gone ahead with the dead parent as in the original sketch but time....
Hi Black,
So good to see you made it through too. It's funny how the feet just came together straight off. you know how that happens some times? The skin textures were all hand drawn on using Bodypaint and textures made in photoshop+painter. Again given more time I would have gone for leather on the servant.
Hi Wandddo,
The great thing for 3D for me is setting up the scene and lighting then getting the camera to optimise the composition. Simply not possible with 2D. There were many variations on the positioning before settling on this one and still I struggled getting the clouds to position just right.
Thanks for the comments and good luck all. Sean
