gshouston 04-01-2005, 07:35 AM Graham Houston has entered the Master and Servant 3D.
Challenge Page (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/masterandservant/view_entries.php?challenger=7079)
Latest Update: Modeling: hand modeling

Here's what I have to date on the hand. I've decided to keep the geometry simple and texture in palm and finger creases. That way it'll just be less of a pain to skin and pose.

Well, to start this off, my main concept for this challenge is the belief that man has (or very soon will), become a servant of a society that he, and everyone around him, has worked to create.
I guess the 'master' in this case is consumer-capitalism, but that's kind of hard to iconize. So maybe I'll use something that can used as a tool for society in general to impress ideas and emotions, like TV.
In my head, I've pictured a scene of a man who has been emotionally and mentally defeated. Someone strong, and intelligent, but in the send, a servant of something that he has unconsciously worked so hard to build. In this composition, the man is both master and servant (in a way). I picture a small but long room in an apartment, with the man slumped down on one end, and a brilliant, state-of-the-art TV at the other, mounted on the opposite wall tilted down to project on him. The image almost beats down on him, constantly re-affirming that no matter how much he longs to be free of servitude, he must go through the motions of buying, and consuming, day after day.
And that's it. Through contrasted lighting and color, I hope to achieve an image of power for the television (and the images projected from it), and one of defeat for the character.

Well, I can't really work on just one thing at a time, so I'll be doing basic modeling and concept work at the same time.
http://www.grahamhouston.com/CGchallege/shadedHead01.jpg
The general shape of the head needs work, around the forehead and such.
http://www.grahamhouston.com/CGchallege/wireHead01.jpg
I'm almost satisfied with the general topology for the mouth and nose (haven't really spent much time on the eyes/forehead yet), but that will probobly change tomorrow. No ears yet, that's a whole can of crap I'm not willing to open tonight.
Nice sketches look forward to seeing them develop. :)

This is just a quick and dirty concept render with a posing dummy and a light. I'm not completely married to this pose, but I think it's adequate enough to get the feeling across.

Hey Nate, thanks for the comment.
I'm planning for this room to look like an apartment eventually. So picture a room decorated with a whole bunch of crap from IKEA or something. This is supposed to be the modern consumer, so he'll try to fill the void with material stuff. Filler.
This last picture was just a really rough concept to get the general atmosphere down, but it's a good thing to bring up, I'll definately keep it in mind. Thanks for the constructive criticism
.........oh and by the way, Tarzan blows.
AHahahHAhaa.... I kill me.

Dude! That's one cool concept!
I can relate to that myself. Very much like my childhood. A slave of the TV. Has a feel of the Dummy in Pink Floyd's "The Wall". I like it a lot.
Good luck!

Well, after much coke and crappy food, I'm happy enough with the ear to post it.

It's not attached, of course, But I need some sleep.

This is me figuring out that .jpg compresses much better in greyscale. Ha. Also flatted out the dude's forehead a bit, and I *think* I re-ordered the outermost edge loop of the eye.... Pffft... who cares?

Hi gshouston, most powerful concept!
The huge emptiness in the composition makes it look like he hocked everything else to buy the plasma screen...Great start to the modelling too:thumbsup:
Keep it coming

Finished the ear. I'm pretty sure that the ear is the most confusing part of the human face. The flow just doesn't make a ton of sense.

Head Modeling nearly complete, but I'm not going to spend time tweaking until I have a decent amount of work done in other areas. Which is all of them. Work Blows.

Hey! Great minds think alike! :) Although mine is an approach more directly at TV, you'rs seems a much broader concept. Which I like. THe layout is similar yet completely different. Was spooky when I first saw it :) hehe
The IKEA idea is certainly cool, I don't know if it's a valid possibility (in such a world of copyright and stuff) but if you could cram as much corporate branding in there as possible too. As if EVERYTHING is a brandname then it might further the idea. So coke cans, reebok shoes, the 'must have' clothes and crap we all collect over time due to the machinations of marketing.
Just a thought, and good luck with it :)

Haven't modeled wrinkles in a while...

Notice I'm only showing the front, cause the back looks like crap. Well, essentially the front looks like crap too, cause this wouldn't deform properly in a million years. I guess I'll use it for a displacement map on a posing proxy. Or maybe I'll just get some sleep.
