I am modelling my first human head in Maya. I have been successfully extruding edges however, I am having great difficulty merging edges. I have clicked on two edges to merge but they will not merge. My question is, what are the rules to merging edges in Maya. For example, is there ever an instance when you can't merge two adjoining edges?

Secondly,
I would like to add vertexes to an edge. But I have yet to discover how I can add a vertex to an already existing edge. How do I do it?

Thanks,
Sam

Merge edges:
Edit Polygon -> Merge Edge Tool :)

Add vertex:
Just use split polygon tool, click once on a edge

I understand how to merge edges, I need to know how it can be applied to certain shapes.
For example, I have a C-shaped extruded polygon. I have selected the top edge, and bottom edge of the C-shape and want to merge them together leaving the middle edge out of the merge. In other words, the C-shape will now have a cap on top of it if you laid it on its side. I realize there are many different ways to create this bunker shape. But my purpose is to understand how the merge edge works. Whenever I try to merge the top, and bottom edges...It wants me to also merge an additional edge. When I then click on the Edge between the Two, it makes a new polygon but it has two undesired faces that jut out.

What are the rules to using merge tool??

Thans,
sam
