Ok this is an infrontofthetvdrawing, so its just an outline of the style im going with. Cartoony.

So what wqould you guys have her ride/control? Bear, Orca or Dragon?
(At the moment im leaning towards orca)

And remote or harness?

I want this to be a really friendly piece. no dark tones, perhaps sad, but definitely not violent. So happy thoughts and happy colours. :)

hi, nice sketch! i would choose the orca too.
good luck  and keep posting!

well, thou I'm a huge fantasy fan, I'd say dragon, but as far as I can see (from this scratch) it's not a fantasy oriented... So that's even better, put a dragon or some huge bear-man to be remote controlled. That way you'll enchanced even more the power of a little escimolooking master (she is a master, right?), over a HUGE and POWERFULL servant...
So far- it looks nice...

think this one is a lot more "punchy".
opinions and crits please!

Im thinking sunset/sunrise colourwise.
Cold blue mixed with gold and pink.

edit: She might have to be smaller though, but theres a problem with the orca being too large compared to her... ill doodle more and see what happens.

Great sketches so far! I can't even decide which I like better, the side view landscape one or the more frontal shot. They're both good! I'm glad you went with the Orca instead of a Bear: That would have mybe looked too much like "The Golden Compass," even if it were unintentional. And the harness is a much more friendly solution than the remote control. Look forward to seeing your progress on this one... Good luck!

You know... it must seem like I just want to praise EVERYONE on here:shrug: ... It's so rare that I can post saying that I'm not too keen on a piece...

I can assure you that I'm not a closet foot licker or anything:p But I do love a great concept and THIS my friends is utterly bottylicious (please excuse the use of the word bootyicious:blush: )

If rendered well enough (not seen any of your work yet:blush: )I think this is gunna be a really dramatic and fun entry!:bounce:

I would say that I prefer the side view, without the wide pan... would focus in on the whale and the girl with birds etc.. in the background.

Best of luck:)

Hey, E.T.

Excellent sketch, I think that few artists in this challenger have made their scenes in the sea, your idea is very original, follows ahead!

Ok so this is just a small update to show you where im going with this.

i kind of went crazy with the sky, i just wanted to try out the colours, and i think theyre coming out fairly well.

Still i am aiming for a cartoony style this time, so the sky might have to go to fit into the mood.

So ive been very pressed for time (beeing home with my son in the daytime, and working as a graphic designer in the evenings) That leaves me with a few hours here and there so stay tuned even if the updates are a bit sporadic.

Im gonna do the lineart next, but i surelike crits and ideas especially at this early stage.

oh i forgot the orca is NOT gonna be coloured like that, nothing of this is final just messing about trying to find the mood.

The sky is amazing!! Love it!... Only thing I would say is that I preferred the side view... felt more dramatic.. and was a bigger picture so opened things up for a bit more atmosphere..

Your choice though:D ... Excellent work!!

This looks great so far! Having a cartoony theme or proportions doesn't necessarily entail having a cartoony or flat rendering style, and it can sometimes really enhance a picture to have a much more solid rendering style. (Okay, so I'm biased, if you've seen my piece, you'd see that this is exactly what I do! :-) ) But I say it because it would be a shame to see you throw out that sky, it's utterly beautful. The gorgeous colors help sell the drama and joy of the foreground, so pelase don't heave it because "it's not cartoony enough!"

...That one dark cloud behind the fin might have to go or lighten up, though! :-)

Anyhow, hope you'll have more time to work on this. Good luck!

What a nice happy concept, there so much dark depressing stuff going around, I'm glad to see some fun ones for a change. I like the drawing allot and I am quite impressed with the clouds you've done. I'll visit again to see how it's coming along, good luck.

Thanks for all your kind comments!

Unfortunately i dont think ill be able to finish this one.
Im swamped with work (always at this time of year, so i kind of wonder what i was hoping for). And between that and my son theres just too little time to paint.

Im gonna give it a last shot because i have it all in my head, but dont be surprised if i dont finish :(.

Anyway, im totally awestruck with the work some (if not most) of youalls been presenting here. So i wont post anything half-arsed.
It sort of feels like top-gun around here dont it? :)

oh well, the best of luck to you all!

actually your water looks good, jst add depth to it, like reducing wave size as it recedes into the horizon, & maybe i dunno how you'll do it, add a foggy distant horizon so you can blend the sky w/ your water... jst keep it up dude, take a break & start again, we artist are moody, jst hit the right note & off you go:thumbsup:

cheers!!

SO another update: as i predicted im running out of time.

Id really appreciate some feedback,
i decided to crop the picture to give it more focus.

What im contemplating now is wether to soften up the lines. Or perhaps totally remove them. What do you guys think?

This was sort of what i was afraid of to begin with. Get too detailed in the sky and the water and id have to keep it up in the characters. sigh.
i dont know. and im sooooo tired.
(mental note to self, dont enter competition while at home with 1-yearold son)

Keep the penguin on the right, delete the penguin on the left (obscuring beautiful clouds), keep the black outlines, but throw some MORE soft blue/ white light on the bottom AND the top of the orc and fish (reflection up from the water/ down from the sky, right now it's looking too flat) and you're done :scream:

Other than that, I like it very much, the clouds in the background and the water are extremely well done. It reminds me of finding nemo!
