Latest Update: Final Image: Servant of Creation

Special thanks
Here we go with my special thanks and considerations:

After one week of long nights working after my regular time at Trattoria Filmes, an animation and comercial films facility in Sao Paulo, I finished the last steps of the painting.

This work is very autobiographical, I started my carreer as an Illustrator in 1989, pre-pc era, before Photoshop, in a time of airbrushes, pencils, brushes, acrilics and a lot of mess around my drawing board. Today, in the digital era, everything is a little faster, stills harder to do, but all can agree with me it's very cleaner than that time.

But one thing remains the same, the pressure of the dead lines and the need for improve the skills and, obvious, the pleasure to do the job.

I love what I do since I was drawing my star wars ships in my school books, but, as artists, in a metaphor way, we are prisioners, servants of our creations, the work controls part of our life, act as a master, especially in the late night with a smashing dead line over our heads.

I did my image with this on mind, but with a humorous point of view, the tinny fantasy/comics characters playing and doind all the mess around the desk, taking out the concentration of the artist, the girls representing the desire impossible to be realised at that moment and the little devil representing the bad conscious, the need to say " I don't wanna do this anymore!!" " I wanna go sleep" " let me go" , etc and the chains linking all the steps of creation and keep going out of the image, linking to the viewer/artist/myself.

About the image, I did one of my favourits works until now in this challenge. I'm really very happy with the result of the concept, composition and the painting.

It was hard to do, a lot of things to render in paint, and in focus with details, and my decision to do the white background leave me without a chance to hide things in the
shadows or insinuate objects with silhouettes or even create a mood with lights or contrast of warm/cold foreground/background per example.

But sure, this is not an excuse for a bad or good painting, It's just an art direction decision, nothing more.

That's it, this is my first challenge and is being a very enjoyable experience.

Now, my special thanks goes to:

To all who had commented in my thread, for the nice incentive replyes or well pointed critics.

To all my dear friends at Trattoria filmes, for incentive and bad jokes, hehehe and Diego "DVA" Velasco and his amazing one week 3d master & Servant image for the very last good suggestions.

To all friends at Quanta Academy of Art, specially for Weberson Santiago for being the model for "the artist" at the reference photos session. Valeu, Webs!

To my young padawan Agnes Ferrari, my other padawan (not so pretty) Julius Magalhaes, and of course, my incredible wife Alice.

Thanks and see you soon.

My concept for this image is based on the relationship between the artist, his creations and his labour

The artist (the comics creator) is the servant of his work, he has no social life, no spare time, nothing, just the endless labour, the smashing pressure of the dead lines, the constant need for improving his skills to do the best work in less time, and the necessity of the popular success, to entertain the masses, to be, in a certain way, a hero.

Day after day, with sleepless nights, tons of junk food, hard working, bad ideas, the approaching of the undefeatable dead line, his creations, his heroes, his demons, escapes from his mind, and in a some kind of alucinative and bizarre way, estabilishes the mastering of his life, asking for more and more creative power.

This first and very loose sketch is just for the compositing of the large elements of the image and to start to define the idea.

My next steps will be the best definition of the characters (Comics creator and his creations) and the mood of his studio.

Hi, thanks for all comments,guys

I`m very happy with the evolution of this idea, so far.

This is the first detailed concept for "The Artist" character.

I will probably do a second version with glasses and paying more attention on his clothes.

I'm running, I'm running!!!

My WIP of the line art.

The next steps: The fun things! Designing the creatures and the mess over and around the drawing board.

It's around 5 o'clock in the morning and the dead line for the artist is 9:00 am to deliver his page to his editor. His creatures/creations are very hungry for more creative power, no matter how pain and suffer it`s gonna cause.

- Ok guys, It is very late, I need to work, stop boring me!!

Now I'm doing the flat colors step and at the same time defining the drawings of new objects and characters.

For the flat colors I'm using Photoshop, one layer with my linework and one layer with the base colors that I will use later for creating and saving my masks.

See you soon.

that recalls me a little Norman Rockwell,

I thought the same thing when I saw the thumbnail. Nice work.
You mentioned that he's a slave to his creations, but you might also have room for an angry alarm clock jumping up and down :bounce: since that's one of his masters, too. I'm worried that the hot cup of coffee will slide down the table. Maybe he has a taboret next to the drawing table?

very very love the way ya think and expression on his face man!!

But I think the chain that tie him with works is too straigh meaning. it's better if ya use other symbolic to sense the feeling of servant, that's all I think.

very good concept with a good drawing, you choice this style of color or it's just the beginning?

schaal
05-03-2005, 02:55 PM
Hi,
Thanks for comments and well pointed critics.

FIDUCIOSE, In my point of view the idea of the chain is very iconic, I can't think in nothing better for while. But you saw something new about my idea, thks!

MDN67, the flat colors are just the beginning of my processes, the final painting will be more sofisticaded (I hope... :) )

Norman Rockwell is one of my very first influences in my studies of visual arts in middle 80`s and early 90'`s I love his work and the work of other great artists like Drew Struzan, Frazzeta, Syd Mead, Moebius, Jose Luiz Garcia Lopes, Esteban Maroto, Dave Mckean, Bill Sienkiewicz, Joe Chiodo, and the list keeps going on and on....:) .

:) bye

Now I'm having fun!!

I started the final painting process and I will do the artist first and the background later.

I resampled the resolution of the flat colors image to 5500 pixels height to do the first full painting job in Photoshop CS.

To start the process , I pasted a layer of recicled paper and added some lighting effects to break the flat colors.

All painting in Photoshop (so far) was made with hard and semi-hard brushes in normal mode and some dodge and burn work with large soft brushes. All this in one layer (the line work, flat colors and recicled paper were merged)

My next step will be the use of Painter 8 to finish the painting of the head with variants of acrilic and gouache brushes and the use of some grainy airbrush to add noise to the flesh.

Bye and again thanks for all comments.

im loving this a lot!!! This is how I feel sometimes when I draw with pencil. There was a comic issue done back in the early 90s that had the theme about characters coming off the paper and begcoming real, though there may be more then one? I dig the expression on the guys face a lot as well! I hope to see this finished as Im curious where you take it to the final. Not much time left, Good luck and happy painting!

Wow, this is really coming to life (so to speak) now that you're adding the paints in! Wonderful work so far. I had wanted to ask something but was waiting to see where you went with the line art: Was the superhero in the cape going to be standing on anything? Now that it's clear there's nothing there, it may be worthwhile to not ethat he looks like he should be standing on something. It's because of the position and orientaion of his feet and ankles. The feet, although floating, are still posed like they're on a flat surface. Perhaps tilting the toes down more might lend a better impression of his being airborne?

Anyhow, it's looking really nice and that's a really small detail to pick out. Good luck with the rest of the paints!

Wonderful details, schaal! Those folds on the t-shirt are great, as is the little hilight on the toe of the sneaker that makes it read just like rubber, and the grease stains soked into the pizza box. Can't wait to see it all done. Good luck!

Schall,

amazing work, needless to say. The pizza looks great, the drawing is very well done, and the idea is so good and familiar to everyone that does any kind of creativity work. Although we think we are masters of our creations we always end up being their slaves.

its even greater to see it now since i´ve been close to the process of creation ever since you had the idea before putting it on paper!

Congratulations and good luck !

More elements in final color: an old cd-player-fm radio, the chair, the Ogre, the Demon and two post-its,

I did an adjust in some folds of the t-
shirt too.

5 days to finish more objects and some creatures.

Suggestions for mess and junk objects around the drawing board are very welcome.

Thanks for the very nice comments, they are really helping me to finish this image on time!

Man, man, man...porra!!! This is just ****ing great! Your style reminds me so much of Drew Struzan...that airbrush "leftovers" around the figures silhouette is just wonderful! Your application of colour...synthetic and precise. It somehow reminds me of the 80s.

Man, you have my vote!

Andreasrocha:

Hei, man, thanks for your reply. I started to draw in the middle 80's and I was 16 years old that time with a lot of energy to draw for hours and looking to great artists like Struzan, Boris, Sienkiewicz, Moebius,Sorayama and a ton more in the covers of comic books, movie posters and VHS packs.

I think my work is a mix of the 80's style of Illustration and a lot of things of the 90's in cg art, but I'm always tryng to study more and this challenge is a really amazing opportunity to explore and push my limits.

I'm posting now more objects. I wil spent this night of Sunday painting and creating more objects and creatures, (my wife will gonna kill me, believe it, this is gonna happen).

I finish my concept for the idea of the relationship between the artist and his work with the chain (not in finish painting yet) linking all the situation and the steps of creation.

My original sketches with a generic comic page was just for layout purposes, I wasn't liking the idea of a generic drawing without relationship with the work and the challenge theme.

Now I´m very happy with the development of the concept and the painting.

I'm working now in more elements, but some elements will be in the stage of drawing and some will be half painted and half in line work to better estabilish this visual metaphor.

More updates:

I'm doing some elements in separete files and after a base draw and paint I'm pasting them in the final image and doing all the adjustaments of size, position and after this doing the final painting, but I'm keeping them in separete layers, now the image has 17 layers and 100 mb of file size in disk.

I'm working on a PC PIV 2.60 with 2GB RAM.

All paint job for the elements done in Photoshop

More things

If anything, the only thing that I would comment (that I forgot to comment before) is the right foot of the demon guy hanging from the table. The foot looks a bit odd to me, but it could just be that he's a mutant or something. Looking forward to seeing the completed image!

Thats it, this is my first challenge and is being a very enjoyable experience.

Congratulations!!! Parabéns!!!

Very nice, I loved it!
It really came out a great piece of art.

You made a very nice balance study on this artwork too, it is a very 'effective' image.

We shall meet some of these days here in SP to take a cup coffee, agree?

Gratz once more !
