Hello.

I'm learning to draw, since i'll need it for my university course. Instead of leaving it till the last minute (won't be leaving for uni for another year and a half or so, but i need to apply in about 8 months) so i've started learning now. I havent done art at school since i was 13, and even then we did very little actual drawing. I just didnt like it. I know how two tutors - Georgia and Max, the former of whoms house i go to, the latter teaching me in our free periods at school. Lovely people.

Anyway, i'm mainly praccticing on paper with my sketching pencils and putty eraser (must - resist - urge - to - say - ugh - rubber) even though i now have my tablet, cause basically it easier to just pick up and draw. When i need to do textures and stuff, i will certainly be using the Wacom.

Anyways, i'm looking for tips from our pencilly artsy people if you can help out, and jeers from those who cant. It will also be a way of me chronological storing my work, hopefully so i can see the area's i am improving on and those i still need to work on a deal. So here are my main, not ****-aroundy ones i have at the moment:

The first was my left hand while drawing which was a bit awkward. The 2nd and 3rd are done from reference photo's i took (well, my brother took the 3rd - it's of my hand). I won't show you the references because i cant be arsed. I know you're not menna draw from photo's really, but screw it,, no one wants to stand still for me so it's the next best thing. The 3rd picture was actually at that angle, but due to my spakkiness, i drew my dads nose awfully wonky in the 2nd pic. Also note - I'm very slow, these pics take me quite a long time.

Any crits and that are welcome. Also, if anyone else has some cool drawings, feel free to show them, i need a bit of inspration. Also, i cannae draw from my mind. I can only draw well from people/references. I'm not one of them people that can just draw (full stop really) a person in my mind doing some cool pose. Anyone got any tips for that? Merci. I'm a 3d artist by trade (and can't texture for the life of me) so i appreciate i'm very new and any tips would be welcome.

I would first like to say the key to drawing is drawing. Just draw as much as you can and you will get a lot better. In terms of improving your drawings, work on getting more greys and getting a full spectrum from white to black. This will give your drawings more volume and shape. Also, just work on getting relationships nailed down. To do this use line of action, break down the image into basic lines that convey the motion of the image. I attached an example of this to give you an idea in case you don't understand. Its just a really quick, like 30 secs, figure study from class, sorry about the quality of the image. Hopefully it helps. Yeah getting people to pose for you can be a pain but its really the best way to go. If you cant find any figure drawing sessions at local schools or artist groups, get some anatomy books, they can help a lot. But most importantly, just keep drawing and everything will come into its place. Best of luck.
