Latest Update: Final Image: Alfreds Rage

Updated final image.

Alfred is a leader of a tiny publishing company of books. He used to be a nice little boy in his childhood and later became a very nice boss in his company that people would admire him so much. Suddenly, near the very important deadline he got very angry because of slow typists and poor office persons. This anger grew so much that his inner, secret beast got over and transformed him to a horrible thing who just made situation worse...

That beating, whipping and shouting did not made typists or other officers faster...but it surely made them hate him forever.

Alfred was a nice boy in his childhood. He started a successful publishing company and became a boss everyone liked so much… until his typewriters seemed to be too slow to get job done at deadline of a new book. That made Albert mad…a REALLY mad. He’s inner anger took over and beside of making him cruel and violent he’s physics started to show strange metamorphosis to be a hidden monster of his alter ego.

Quick Painter-sketch for 3D. Thinking of different camera angles and lighting…so lot to do before modeling starts.

Thanks for liking the idea. I am in the state of panic, since amount of people will be lot more than in a sketch...so I need to really be careful where I copy and modify them instead of creating from the start (or from halfway).

I try to get poses more meaningful and already have an idea for "Boss" and two typist.

I'm a bit late after first entry I made because of a computer problems, but now I can continue this challenge. This is a first model I made. It is a workdesk wich will be copied and modifyied (if necessary).

Remember that those typists are already humans, so "Boss" can be almoust anything...

I try to get "Boss" to be a half human and half...errrr...something like Indian mythology we all know and maybe even further.

Thanks! I already found images of old typewriter-machines from frontside and sides (sort of). But I have a serious trouble to find reference images from they backside I need for my angle of view.

Wheel of a wagon. I did not model it with high polycount, since they are rotating in a final rendering and slight motion blur will be applied and wheels are not too sharp to see poly artifacts.

Various parts modeled since last time. Quite hard work, since there is lots of stuff in these machines and they are partially covered. I concentrate on mostly what would be seen on final image and not model every tiny piece, but still my referencephotos does not show everything I liked to see.

No characters here, but I put a little scene together to test how my lights are working in this room. Note, that I decided to flip desks around, so typist will be sitting backwards to a camera. That's because it creates more contrast and mood to scene. Also it will be giving "The Boss" more radical appearance.

Arms are tweaked a little. Quite hard to decide how they should be attached to a body. Not hard for modeling but how they look visually. I also think how inner muscularity/bone-structure should be at this situtation.

Making clothes of Boss. At this point I have just mirrored whole body, so it has same "holes" in the jacket in both sides and will be fixed. I also make sleeves more rough and torn...this is fun!

Hi Gunilla! Sorry for late response. Actually I digged some references of old offices and culture and decided that I mix it with a bit modern stuff. Desklamp, rooflamp and table is from more "recent" period (70's) and others are somewhere from 1920 to 1960 (a rough estimate). I was a bit scare if this "mix" will work but I let my vision quide me a bit. At some point I tought that desk is too modern and still thinkin of redoing it. Clothes are kind of "universal" but I do have some really old references I may use.

I am very, very sorry for such late response, but I was away about week and even I receive so little posts in this thread I managed to miss your post....partly because it was on a previous page.

Thanks for likeing my stuff. Boss is my first attemp ever to build totally different looking faces on a single head. But it was more fun than I tought! Some difficulties of course arise when trying to connect two different topology, but so far everything is gone well.

I build more of back of the head and mirrored it to a "monster" side (not shown). Now I work on connecting two different topology and fixing tri-side polys i had to create. Luckily only 3 of them and easy to fix.

Basic form of head is quite ready. Before adding details and finish the ear I will connect it to a body. Maybe try some texturing also. But now I take a little brake of modeling this head and work with other parts of scene.

Well, does "...trace" sound better? Nooooo! I think you revealed your inner feelings about me... Maybe I come to visit you...since I live in Finland and have been a trip in Stockholm before...but just once some years ago. :D

cool concept.

i especially like the "empty-room"-tests.

but somehow your camera angle for the whole scenario needs some tweeking. right now it looks to normal. it needs to be more dramatic. you know like you could almost smell the main character sweat from stress...

for example zoom on one particular "typewriter/desktoplamp/poorguy"-set in the foreground with the boss clearly visible in the background and the rest of the set blurred/desaturated. like one of those scenes where peterparkers (spiderman) boss threatens everyone in the office...

cheers

Thanks for crit :D

It's quite hard to anyone but me to see what final composition and "mood" will be, since my scene does not yet include all objects (or even second main character). I work hard on two female characters and their "influence" to a scene will be a very big. I keep eye on what you said in case I lost my way in some point :D

Testing where those lights should be so that Emily would look good. Actually she is more cute than Irene, so I may switch their position in composition (comp that no-one has seen yet).

good modelling and concept keep it up.......

Thanky ya, thank ya, thank yaaaa! I hope I will get more suggestions/crits also, since I try to send finished piece around next wednesday. I know I haven't posted more "final composition" yet, but working on male hands and...errrrr, male characters also.

First hairtest. Used whole morning to modeling hair by polys, but then tried this quirky but free hairplugin again (already abandoned since first tests) and suddenly got quite ok results. Lots of tweaking still needed.

This is the idea how big Boss is compared to Emily. Emily has borrowed eyeglasses from Irene, so do not mix those girls, heh.

Boss will not stand straight in final composition so I might make him even bigger.

Hihiii! Thanks again! Clock in a tie is something that I hope that really captures what "Boss" is thinking. He's not a beast really...but clock is to him!

Shoe is ready. Maybe some tweaks when I see how it fits with ladies.

Hand of "Boss" which belongs to a "monster-side". Main difference of "normal-side" will be of course length of fingernails, but if time allows I tweak muscularity also.

Dammit! This new machine won't render even 640 x 400 when everything in the scene is in a place! I know I have to compose it together for final size, but now I can't even test how my lights are working. Maybe have to reduce polycount for test purposes...ouch!

Here is a idea of how Boss would hold his items. Those spikes are whips but even I have boned them I haven't bend them yet.

Hands need more tweaking, since boning and posing distorted them a bit.

Here is a update of posing a Boss. Also some pushers added. Other whip does not show properly but it's there.

Here is a lowpoly version of whole scene, except some characters and chairs. Whips are still not deformed yet. Any critique?

Flat? Just Like your head! Just kidding :D

Ok, must tweak it more. Actually it is a one of my early quick models for this competition and almost forgot to enhance it, so thanks!

Lighting looks really good, Pasi! Creates the right kind of mood, continue like this. I would perhaps consider loosing the leftmost row of lamps in the cieling or move them to the right side - right now the top area seems a bit busy.

Good luck for the final rush!

One mean-looking boss you have there. Reminds me of principal of LLAI.

Is this the final camera angle? The clock does look abit texture+alpha on plane. I would give mr. executive manager some more light to boost up his face and that must-have tie.

Excellent work so far, all those details shows you can push polys just right. Onnea loppupäiville.

cheers,

Quess what? I already made that movement of lamps and you see it in next render coming soon I hope. :)

That was not intentional, but I think I captured his attitude also. ;)

I think maybe small adjustments. You understand it better when femail character it's on its place (she will be picking papers on the floor almost front of Boss.

Clock is the quick thing and I will just left the numbers as texture. Yeah, I know Boss needs more light on his face...must work on that.

Changed camera angle a bit. I have to do some tweaking, smoothing of objects and complete Irene's head. Eyes of Boss needs some work also.

Ok, now it's over and finished and even I had few hours left I did not made an update since one change would lead to another and I would needed another week for it. I regret I lost week or two and some final adjustments had to be left out. But then again someone would not even notice them I think, so no hard feelings for it. Thanks for people who made comments even there were not as many I hoped.

My original idea was to try to render it using radiosity, but rendering time was too high. I think with at least one or two days more I could use that but since I made little test the difference in lighting was not too great except for walls.

By the way, a person called "Herbert" who is near the "Exit" door, is facing towards "The Boss" because he was just coming in from the door and is been pushed by persons who runs out in panic.

Irene, who is on the left is trying to keep calm even this monstrous boss is shouting to her.

The fact I did not use exaggerated expressions (except "Herbert") on "servants" was because transformation of boss to a monster has been happened a few hours ago (that's why servants had time to get that carriage for him). And therefore they are a bit passed the most horrifying shock and just try to live on with it and decide what to do...keep on working or just get off.

hi. why this scene is soooo dark??!! I can't see anything! I think you could light it much more than this. or fix the final image in some image-editing softwere with levels/brightness.
nice models, but we can't see them well.

Actually it's a bit brighter in hires version. I tested it several machines and found it ok so it may be your monitor that makes it more darker than should be. Also it was intentional to use darkness for mood.

To be able to answer I like to know exactly where I was critisizing him so much. Send me a e-mail with links of those threads (some at least), please.

This is not a place to discuss about personal stuff. Just e-mail me.
