for me although it was 4 years ago i discoverd maya and never looked back after using Max (for a short time though)
i dont use maya or max on regular basis, and have never really used eighter of them to such way of consither myself a master, altought i have a pretty good knowledge in Maya,
i havent touched max since r2.5 so you figure it out,
damn im interessted in Max v5! but im happy with what i use, so
anyway Maya are more nodebased, when i used maya for the first time (compair it to max) i was impressed by the ease and the way you work, i thought it was hard at first, but once you understand its way of doing things, creating things where a joyfull task,
one thing that i thought was awesome was that you can Set a Key on just about every thing and you can trigger them very easy,
anywhere and everywhere!
i think you should defentely consither learning Maya, its a nice program,

I was a huge 3dsMAX user before I started use Maya. When I was first learning Maya, my Max days were numbered. Now I haven't used Max since 3.0 release :)
I got into Maya fairly quick. If you have extensive experience with Max, you shouldn't have any problems. The biggest problem I had was coverting over Max's Material editor to Maya's hypershade... but now I think I know Maya's a great deal better now that I've been using it for a while now.
I use the Maya's hotbox interface with everything else disabled. I also keep the shelf on for instant commands that I usually use.
Good luck and keep at it!
