Hello there.. I'm creating a model of the SDS - Dragunov Tiger (it is a soviet sniper rifle) to be used in an amateur live action movie we're realizing (the actual replica costs too much for our limited means).. The model is almost complete: only the scope and some minor details are missing.

But this is the first time I'm doing something more complicated than a tutorial, I really don't know how to recreate the materials the rifle is made of.

The handle and the handguards are made out of laminated wood.. while the barrel is made out of steel with chrome lining.
Since this is to be used in a movie I would like it to look as real as possible..

Any advice on the steel part? Should I try to find a texture or go with a procedural map?

Here is a photo of the real Dragunov (if someone from the maxforums is reading.. yes this time it is a real photo :) ). Please note that in this photo the handguards are made out of plastic. The soviet versions' handguards are made out of laminated wood.

I'd recommend making all the base metal surfaces with procedurals, and then adding things like finger smears, scratches, finger prints and so on using image maps. The wooded parts would probably be best done using some photos of wood, in my opinion.

Recreating the actual look of the metal and wood should be really easy though :)

Nice model, although it's a bit muchy in areas. . .

How close to this gun do you expect the camera to get in your movie? If you're going to get within a foot or two, I would probably either remodel parts, or at least work on your definition.
(If you're up for that, and if you want specifics, let me know)
Overall I agree with Leigh. However don't forget to use images for the trademark bump map, and other little details that won't work with procedurals.
