View Full Version : R8 "Early-Birds" Shipp[ed] [Tuesday] to US/CA
RickBarrett 09-27-2002, 01:00 AM Hey Gang,
The rumors are true. We'll start shipping an early bird version of CINEMA 4D R8 to US & Canadian customers on Monday. Many other regions are also preparing to ship this version, but I can't offer a specific timeline for other areas. The early bird version will include cds only, with manuals following as soon as they're available. While some additional enhancements and bug fixes will find their way into the final box version, the early bird is a feature-complete release version.
Much of the documentation is available in PDF on the CD, and we know all of you are loyal customers and can use your existing documentation, knowledge of C4D and forums like this one to fill in any gaps and get started on the learning curve. So we decided to let you have an early crack at Release 8 while we work hard to get the documentation printed.
Our salespeople are in the process of contacting all of the folks who pre-ordered R8 to find out if you'd like to receive the early bird version and confirm your registration and shipping info.
I'll spend as much time here as I can next week answering questions that pop up, as will the tech support reps and I'm sure Kai and other beta testers. I'll be doing some "moderating" and probably creating some sticky threads to answer common questions. I'm sure our support teams worldwide will appreciate if you look to the forums first, leaving them more time to prepare tutorial materials that will be of use to everyone rather than dealing with lots of customers individually.
Have a good weekend and get lots of rest so you're ready for next week ;)

Can't wait!
Ndat: you could probably call tomorrow and preorder and they would ship you the prerelease on Monday. Someone on Postforum said they ordered earlier this week and he was told he would get the prerelease CD.

I think you may see more works from R8 now, not from me personally but within the community too. As Rick said try to focus your questions here or Postforum or Creative cow (and for the german speaking folk C4Dtreff) There will definitely be a lot of questions. On that note I personally would also suggest that before you post a question please check the new posts to see that the question hasn't already been answered. With four major forums going on now, I think many of us testers and Mxon guys who visit the forums will likey be answering a many questions more than once, last thing we need is to answer it four or five times in one forum :) They had to do this when I am still busy :) Maybe I'll let thew other Testers get a word in this time and not be such a know it all blabber mouth ;)

And don't forget when you get the final box, you can use the earlybird CD as your official Maxon Coaster. :D

This is excellent news.
Does this also mean release in the UK also?
I'm really happy about that no documentation thing....cos I'm drowning in it at the moment....I bet you thought you would never hear a user say something like that! I expect I will wish I hadn't said that later in the week when I wanna know "what the hell does that button do". Thanks for keeping the forum informed:buttrock:

hmmm just phoned to get a shipping number... and they're now not going to be sending out till tommorow as there was some problem with the serial numbers apparently... so we await wednesday with baited breath.
on a side note i'm not so happy that because i had to pay for the early bird ($75 as i just bought my xl7 within the get a free upgrade time with intent to get the xl8 bundle, and so wasn't on the pre-order list apparently), and i had to pay the weight of the shipping for the final boxed release as well on this early bird ($36)... even though the early bird weighs very little (and if i didn't buy the early bird i wouldn't have had to pay for the shipping of the boxed release 8)... hmmm... not impressed with that customer service Maxon, trying to scrape back every penny. :( very very heartily under-impressed. :thumbsdow

There is a serial number issue we discovered just prior to shipping the early birds today. It's currently being worked on by some very sleepy Germans and we're really sorry it wasn't caught sooner.
I just received confirmation that they've isolated the problem (it affected US serial numbers only - so we just lucked out guys) and we'll be able to get the early birds out tomorrow. We are all geared up to ship first thing in the morning (in fact a large number of early birds are stuck halfway through our order processing system).
I really do apologize for the delay - if it's any consolation the alternative was that you'd receive a cd tomorrow with utterly useless serial numbers. And you can ask anyone here - I'm probably as disappointed as you are to have to announce this delay.
On the other topic mdme_sadie brought up, don't quote me on this as I'm not in sales but my understanding is that free upgrades have to pay shipping costs regardless. The early bird version is completely optional for everyone, and I know everyone's anxious to get the copy in their hands but there's also less expensive shipping methods available. I'm sorry you're disappointed sadie, but we're trying our best to get this upgrade out to everyone within reasonable time and cost. If you still have questions, feel free to send me a pm.

Rick is there any chance of me getting an early bird here in New Zealand?....or do I have to wait for the full release?
Cheers
Stu.

I dunno Stu. To be honest they don't tell me much that doesn't involve the US. Your best bet is to call your local distributor and ask.

Just a quick update. As of this minute all the early birds are processed and piled in our warehouse ready for "brown" to pickup. As promised, I'll spend as much time as I can here in the coming weeks to answer any questions about R8. Enjoy.

Damn!! Why'd you ship my "early bird" UPS GROUND!!?? I guess it'll be a late bird, since I won't have it for a friggin' week.

The lady I talked with last week said they are shipping it the same way as what you paid for on the pre-order. If you didn't pay for overnight, you'll probably get it ground. I paid for overnight and it should be sitting on the step at home waiting for me today! :)

I preordered the full release more than 6 weeks ago and I have no recollection of the shipping method I chose. I wish they'd provided this information about "early bird" shipping when I'd ordered so I'd at least have had the option of switching to overnight.

Sorry about your predicament Adam - you'd have to check with sales but my hunch it that they had trouble getting in touch with you so they stuck with the shipping method you originally chose when you pre-ordered. It's usually better to err on the less-expensive side, but I realize this may be an exception.
We also probably hadn't decided to do the early bird when you first ordered - so couldn't have given you the option then. That decision was made only a couple of weeks ago based primarily on documentation delays.
And BTW - we haven't made any firm commitments on when the final package will be ready - the gap may be a bit longer than you think.

I cannot find any of the documents for V8 on any of the 3CDs I was sent. Am I missing a CD or am I not looking in the right place. All I can find are PDFs refering me to a documentation CD, which I do not have. Please help me.

You're not missing anything. The only documentation on the early bird cd is a soft-ik and a thinking particles tutorial in the tutorials folder of your R8 installation (after you've installed those modules). The documentation isn't yet complete - which is the main reason we released the early-bird.
Watch the forum and ask questions if you have any. We're developing a sort of "live" manual right here.
- Rick -
Personally I think the best type of manual is trial and error :)
Ah bummer looks like I missed out, havent heard back from my dealer and I pre ordered.......anyway can you tell us if 8 the full version is like months away or are we talking weeks?........
Thanks
Stu.
