Title: Vfs Modeling & Texturing Reel
Name: Nicholas Chong
Country: Canada
Software: After Effects, Deep Paint, Photoshop, SOFTIMAGE|XSI

Hi everyone,
I recently graduated from Vancouver Film School after a year. Here's my demo reel.
I tried my best to demonstrate a wide range of skills from matte painting to compositing my characters.
It's been a lot of hard work this year but in the end I think it was worth it!
I'm looking for a job now.
open to all critiques and/or comments, thanks!

This beast is intended to look like a physical sculpture model. The challenge was to create realistic looking shaders to make it feel like it's physically there. Therefore, final gathering was opted for this model.

This is a matte painting set. Using stock photos, i painted in all snow elements and details. Pain stakingly camera mapped onto metageometry, i am able to do a 3d camera move. Special effects like snow falling, water, lighthouse rays, fog, flag simulation & birds were added to increase believability.

An attempt to model and texture a realistic human head in approx. 3 days.

A mechanical cyber Spiderman, inspired from an action figure. I've never seen a robot spiderman before, so i had to do one.

It's a very high poly model containing about 2.0 million polygons. Some of the details, in order to make it less heavy in mesh, i had to use hi resolution bump maps, as low res ones would show pixelation on the straight geometric lines.
more models in demo reel.
thanks

I like most of the reel, except for the one little alien looking creature that isn't on screen too long, right before the rhino. I'd omit that character because it doesn't seem to be up to par with your other work. Other than that it's a nice reel (though you may need a new live action actor to be scared by the rhino at the end :D )

Thank you,

I'm gonna take that off my reel the next time i update it. I've got a fair bit of comments on that. Thanks. I just thought that i could show that i could texture not just monsters and humans.

Very nice. I will try to comment on each thing. In the future if you want comments it would be better to post each object individually.

First creature:
Great modeling and amazing textures! I like the colors. The bump is way too high though and is starting to cause artifacts. I would try working on upping your supersampling, or even using displacement maps (zbrush?)

castle: Very nice, but the rocks lack realism. They look too smooth. The transition from hill to sky also seems wrong and very pasted in

head: Great modeling and texturing! The skin is amazing, good job! The only thing lacking here is the hair, but I am sure you already knew that.

mech spiderman: His torso looks a little too stiff in that pose, but that is a small crit. I feel that this spiderman really rocks!

Great job overall, your stuff really rocks.
