Well after many distractions since I registered, I am now finally able to devote some time to this. The story that I've come up with for the basis of my Master and Servant entry is derived from various Chinese Myths and Legends. Please note that I have made no attempt to accurately portray any existing deities, etc. in Chinese Mythology. I merely used them as inspiration.
My Master and Servant Fairy Tale
The balance between good and evil in a far away world has been disturbed. It has swayed to darkness and chaos. Evil, self-centered gods now walk among men, doing as they please and bringing no good. The good that once existed, the gods that once helped to keep the balance are gone. Destroyed. Only evil, fear, and despair remain. Or so some thought. In the heart of one innocent child, who survived the destruction by mere chance, lives a seed of hope, a dream of goodness and peace. By chance this child stumbles onto the ancient fruit of the immortals, which appears as an ordinary peach. Before the benevolent gods were completely wiped out, they had transferred their remaining power (their will so to speak) into a nondescript vessel giving it the appearance of a mere peach. Starving and cold, she hastily eats the peach, not being mindful of whether it was contaminated or poisoned. Upon consuming the peach, the seed of hope within her grows and the vision of goodness and peace manifests itself through her. It transforms her into Omn We, the Dragon Princess, Goddess of Peace and Harmony. She is the last vestige of hope for this foresaken world. Through the power of the lost fruit of the immortals, she creates her servants in the form of a celestial dragon (Peace) and a powerful foo dog (Harmony). Together the trio begin their journey to restore the balance of existence...
Well, that's it for now. I will draft up some sketches and post them shortly. looking forward to your critiques.

Here is the first compositional study.

Here's the second composoitional study. I changed the viewing angle to make things a little more interesting.
04-28-2005, 02:21 PM
Here is my third composition study. The dragon and the foo dog take a much more abstract role in this composition, but I think it adds an interesting twist. I\'d appreciate any advice or comments on which compositional direction to take. Detailed line studies to come shortly.

great.i realy realy love Chinese Myths:bounce: .and they're my inspiration too.
you story is cool. about ur sketch i love the shape of the dragon in 1st comp and 2nd comp because it very beautiful(for me. lol).
In the 1st comp i can see the chinese landscape(is'n it?).think it can tell something about world of chinese myths. And something in the dragon claws that i think u can use it to represent the symbol of the dragon(peace) and for the dog too.
so..for me love the 1st composition most.
good luck to u .

xric7: Hey thanks much for taking the time to give me your feedback. I really appreciate it.
I'm glad you liked the 1st composition, because I was in favor of that one too. I think it provides the viewer with the most amount of information. I am also considering making the width larger to include more landscape and give people more visual clues that it is Chinese. It will be a challenge to balance everything compositionally though. We'll see.
The other 2 compositions were interesting variants, but I can see how someone could get confused due to lack of visual information. I may work on them separately as an exercise sometime.
Thanks again and stay tuned for more updates.

Thanks for remembering me. I've been buried with things at work and project deadlines. I've just completed them and am ready to roll again. I am going to have sketches and line drawing submitted in a day or so. I'm going to have to really work hard to get the color phases submitted in time. Stay tuned.

Nice drawing
05-09-2005, 04:52 AM
Here is the line art for my image. I increased the head space to improve the composition. Plus it will give me a chance to render a nice sky. I'll establish values next. Any crits will be most appreciated.
05-09-2005, 05:15 AM
I really like it, I don't wanna comment more due to how much I like it...when it's colored I'll be back...

O. Martin, cha0t1c1, and gordonm: Thanx for the positive feedback. Your encouragement is very much appreciated. I will work hard to continue to live up to your praises. This one is gonna take a lot of midnight oil to complete in time, but it'll be worth it at the end. Thanx again! :)
05-11-2005, 12:06 AM
excellent work.:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: love your characters and pose and comp.the detail portrait of princess and chinese dragon are very beutiful.though it's not finish yet but i think this is most beautiful girl in this challeng.:buttrock: can't wait for color.
thank for ur message,mate.take care.
05-11-2005, 03:01 AM
Thanks for the kind comments. As far as this being the most beautiful girl in the competition, I'm not sure about that. I think Linda Bergkvist's ladies are incredibly beautiful. I can only hope to come somewhere in the ball park of those renditions. Anyway, thanks much for your kind assessment of my work. I will try to live up to those words.
05-13-2005, 03:04 AM
I love the way you have set up the composition and your line work is clean. I would like to see this one through. Good Luck! I will keep an eye on this thread.:D
05-13-2005, 03:27 AM

beelow and xric7: Thanks for the nice comments guys! I'm posting my first color WIP right after this. Let me know what you think!
05-13-2005, 06:09 AM
Here's my first rough coloring WIP. I decided to make the dragon translucent as if he was made from the air itself. Any crits would be most appreciated. Hopefully, if I burn enough midnight oil, I'll get this done. :)
05-13-2005, 06:15 AM
Wow, all this new works poping out or maybe i just missed some of them.
Really good sketches dude. The idea is very simple, but definately effective. I dig the design of the creatures and the female character. Can't wait to see an overall colours. Hurry up, time's running out, hehehe.
beautiful lines!! i love lines this well drawn.
Hope youve got the time to color it as nicely as the lines deserve.
05-13-2005, 08:14 AM
good start for coloring.
beautiful color.:bounce: and i can feel peace and hamony of the world.
but i think the princess's proportion look a little strange.maybe her legs are too short.and her arms are not the same size.i donno.perhaps i was wrong.:p
only one thing i'm sure is the time running now.go go go.keep up the good work!:buttrock:
05-13-2005, 01:45 PM
xric7: Hey thanks for the critique. I think I see what you're talking about. I'll make a fix with my next posting which should be sometime later today. Keep an eye out for it and let me know what you think after I've made my update. It should only require a minor tweek to fix what you've pointed out.
05-13-2005, 01:50 PM
Arc80 and E.T.: Thanks for your positive feedback! It really helps to keep me going, especially with the clock ticking down.
E.T: I'll do my best to match the coloring to the line drawing in terms of quality. I tried to lay a good foundation by having a solid drawing. Let's hope that the rest of the "house" holds up.
05-14-2005, 03:50 AM
I've modified the legs of the princess and hopefully corrected some proportion issues in the process. Beginning the work on the Foo Dog. Crits will be most appreciated.
05-14-2005, 05:44 AM
Just keeps getting better!
05-16-2005, 03:21 PM
very beautiful color and excellent ambience. only one crits about Foo Dog.overall mood is look clean and solf but the Foo Dog's face is a bit dark and cruel.
keep it up.:) :buttrock:
05-16-2005, 03:27 PM
hey, I love your concept!
looks great with the soft colors. hurry man, The challenge is close to finish...:bounce:
05-17-2005, 08:13 AM
Here\'s the background with a the finished sky and mountains close to finished. Not sure what other tweaks to make except to adjust colors to harmonize with figures once they are done. The dragon, princess, and the foo dog are next to be done. Crits welcomed :)
05-17-2005, 08:23 AM
xric7: Thanks for the feedback. The Foo Dog is supposed to look mean. He is a guardian/enforcer of peace and his grimness reminds us that his task cannot be taken lightly. Actually, I'm making all this up, but it sounds good. Ha! Ha! I like the mean look on his face, because it conveys a sense of controlled power which is what I want. Oh yes, I still need to fix the hand holding the fan...it's too big as you sensed previously. Tough to cathc everything when you're in a rush!
Ducklater: Thanks for the encouragement. I really need it now that I'm low on sleep and running out of time. :scream:
Back to work... Only 2 days left!!
05-17-2005, 08:23 AM

Hi Christopher: Thanks for the vote of confidence. I am hard at work as you are reading this. Hopefully I will have something that looks close to finish by the end of my long session today.:scream:
05-18-2005, 07:47 AM
Well, here's another update after some anatomical revisions to the princess. Also completed most of the dragon. Two more submissions to get the other milestones if everything goes right.
05-18-2005, 08:03 AM
coming along very well.
love the smile of the princess.
realy want to see the detail of her face.:p
u have 12 hrs addition.
First up, we've decided to push the deadline back a bit, so that instead of ending midnight GMT, we say it ends "midnight", and there's 12 hours grace to allow for people in varying timezones.
The countdown timer is the final decider in who gets in and who doesn't, if ever in doubt use the countdown timer.
05-18-2005, 06:33 PM

05-19-2005, 06:55 AM
Phew! Done! Yeah! Ah!
Well, I put everything I had into this to get it done on time. Sometimes the skill was lacking, but the heart was there. This has been a tremendous growth experience for me. In the end I learned a lot about myself and made a few friends in the process. What a great artist community we have here. Until the next challenge!
05-19-2005, 07:04 AM

xric7: Thank you for your support. It meant al ot to get some encouraging words from all the artists who gave me feedback, but yours was especially meaningful. As you are obviously a great artist, your work gave me inspiration to finish mine. You are good for the CGTalk community. You have my vote when the judging comes.
:bounce: :buttrock: :applause: :D

Metrini: Thanks for your kind words! Did you have an entry in the M&S challenge? I'd like to see it if you did.
05-19-2005, 01:48 PM
Wow man... I think that maybe you need more time 4 a better coloring, but...
amazing work..!! congratulations!!:applause:
Nice! Good luck to ya!
05-19-2005, 03:44 PM
Duklator and E.T.: Thanks again for your feedback and well wishes. Your support of my work was very important to me. It gave me the mental fuel I needed to finish it.
I do agree that with more time, I could do a better job, but it was a great exercise of discipline and work ethic to try to get something meaningful turned in on time. I learned a lot from the experience. However, I really liked the concept I came up with that I'm considering continuing to work on it off-line to get it to where I think it could be. Hopefully, that place is better than where it's at right now. I'll post it on CGTalk sometime in the future.
In the meantime, best of luck to both of you with your Master & Servant entries.
05-19-2005, 06:56 PM
I agree with you.
when you submit threads, tell me, I wanna to see more work from you.
05-20-2005, 02:25 AM
Ducklator: Sure thing. I'll drop you an e-mail when I post the upgrade as well as any other submissions. You be sure to do the same for me though. I'm interested in seeing how your work progresses.:)
Here is a link to one of my recent CGTalk submissions. Let me know what you think.
