Well i've had great fun with my first challenge here at cgtalk. I feel like i've made some new friends and have learnt loads. Thanks to all those who helped out along the way and posted to my thread.
The Story.
The Servant has had enough of the Masters arrogant ways and how he has been mistreated by the master over the years. The servant is prepared to risk all to exact revenge by one simple act. How the story unfolds is left up to the viewer, it could go in many ways, my aim was to freeze a moment in time just as the deed was done.
Good luck to everyone.

Hi folks,
My concept revolves around the idea that the master temporarily looses his power over the the servant. The servant, in this case a butler, empowers himself by serving the master a cooked rat for dinner. The two characers expressions will be key to the success of this image (or not) and it is this area that i plan to spend most of my time.

The butler, first scetch

Your sketches and the first model really make me laugh, it seems your idea has potential for alot of humor and to portray alot of emotions. Its also interesting that you are taking a stereotypical relationship and inverting it, and that this is where the emotion in your work is derived from. Looking forward to seeing more developement of this idea.

Previously I was using cin4d too - good done software, but not sutisfying for me:)
I've got hair department also - great plug-in.
Now I'm facing a problem how to arrange hairs for my characters in max (no payed plug-ins!)...
I wish I could have such for max - free and easy to use!!
Well, maybe I'll do that with import/export...

A first rough test for composition. I'm using a spiral and thirds with the idea that the eye is drawn into the scene from the rat to the butler and finally having the comp lines merge at the masters eyes, which is the focal point of my scene. The master will eventually have his right hand pointing at the rat to complete a loop.
The master will be wearing a smoking jacket, shirt and cravatte. i'll model the jacket properly tonight, i've only roughed it in at the moment to make sure that everying is fitting properly.

It's really good to see someone that knows how to go about composition  I think that maybe you can add to the humour by almost braking the flow here. Something on the table that just hold up the eye for a second. Charlie Chaplin was the master of this littlle trick, and the good thing is, that most people are unaware of what's going on.

With all the respect something doesnt flow in the composition for me.The Servant creates a "dead" body to the flow and the position is over weight on the top when the focus is on the buttom of the frame to the served dinner.I do not know if the advice that i will give you is the correct one.I am going by insticts.IMO you have to lower the pose of the master closer and forward to the plate. The Servant has to be almost over the master"s head and not at the corner of the composition. Also the dinner has to be just served and not really totally on the table.I would say the left hand of the servant just leaving the plate on the table when the right on(maybe over the master's head holding the plates cover....I do not know...maybe I am wrong.Just a little dissapointed from the composition....I look it again, and I still feel wrong about the servant and his movements.
Hope I did not confuse you:thumbsup:

Interesting stuff this. I once did a little study when at uni years back. I used the shower scene from Psycho, some Charlie Chaplin Stills, some Jean Luc Godard stills and the Japanese print the Wave. People who read from right to left just don't get the jump of fright with Psycho  Euros don't get the point of the wave. The Chaplin still where everything is pointing to one place via a triangle but for one cactus leaf, was found to be funny by everyone but disturbing to a lot of the people asked. Jean luc created the most problems across cultures.

Raises a few questions about Euro/American manga, should we be flipping it? If we want to sell soaps to China should we do the same?

I think the image as is works great but I take D Dimis' points at one level. I think he's seeing it as one frame in an animation, rather than a finished single image. Would this type of lugubrious butler take the lid off before he'd quite put the plate down? I think not.

I do think that the butler should be leaning in a bit over the master, enjoying the moment, and that the monocle is too far out to the left.

handlebar
04-13-2005, 03:19 PM
Thanks for the input folks, i'm taking everything on board and learnin' lots. I probably posted this comp test too early as much of the modeling has yet to be finished. I haven't done the butlers legs yet which will explain why he is looking a bit top heavy in the composition. I want to keep him in the position that he is as i want his mouth level to be at the level of the masters ear, as if he were muttering some kind of expletive as the dastly deed was done. Very early stages yet, i'm trying to think about things in the composition that aren't obvious to the viewer, but are important in the interaction of the two old coots.

04-13-2005, 06:10 PM
I agree with stoat the servants eyes should be looking straight at the master to gauge his reaction, plus his eyeline will lead you back to the master.

Don't forget that colour and light will also effect how your eye flows over the scene. It can be a simple matter to drop down an intrusive area by adjusting the lighting. DOF can do the same for the background.

Overall I think the scene is looking really good.

The modeling is superb! I'm very impressed, you've managed to catch the emotion of the scene in the characters themselves. The composition is good as well. I agree that the servant probably should be watching the master's reaction more closely but I think it could work very well as he stands now. Textures and lighting will have a great influence also, so just keep tweaking :)

handlebar
04-17-2005, 03:21 PM
Thanks for your comments folks, Stoat i've yet to model the dish, whats there is only for comp reference, i eventually aim to have a plate on a silver tray with handles. Also the textures are only rough just to get a feel for things, i want to create a ballance between cartoon and realism, hopefully if all go's to plan the realism will be in the modeling and the toon style will be in the textures. The reflection that you are seeing in the dish cover is from the room celing, off camera, its only a flat plane at the moment and needs detail. I've tried some tests with some chandelier lights reflecting in it but it became too distracting, i want to keep things simple.

Thanks Deryk, this is the overall feel that i'm after in my scene, ive unwrapped the two heads now and will paint some simple bumps and i want to add a deep red luminance map to the masters head to make it look like his heads about to explode. The clothing will be very similar to what you see whith a few tweeks here and there.

This is to give you a rough idea of my lighting set up for my image.
Top left: A light dome with a coloured gradient added with the use of 50% grey plugin for cinema 4d
Top middle: Spot for main light source, placed above an a little forward to simulate a light above the table.
Bottom left: fill light
Bottom middle: a combination of all lights.
Right: how it looks on the image so far.
This is just a test, levels will be adjusted when textures are added, as one will inevitably effect the other.
Thanks for looking.

Another composition update, the pannel of the door in the background now creates a triangle that points towards the master, it also reflects the triangle of the carpet and lines up with the angle of the table. The master will be thumping his right hand down on the table causing wrinkles in the tablecloth, and i aim to add a toppling wine glass and cutlery, all these additions will eventually soften up the composition. The rat has yet to be modelled properly, its just there for volume reference. Thanks for looking.

Hey handlebar,
interesting face construction of your rat! It seems to think about some serious stuff :)
Don't know which version of c4d you use but I would become close to exhausted doing it in my v6... Really good modelling.
Curious to see it with fur!
And you've get that great toon style, honestly!http://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

a quick test for the rat texture. I had hoped to use hair dept for it but i'm afraid my humble home pc is beginning to groan. Thanks again for your comments folks.

great work, i love the modelling on all the characters, its really top notch. The colours very nice as well, except i'm not so keen on the background (its a bit bland) although i'm sure you will fix it up. Perhaps use some polygons with alpha maps for the rats fur, just to get the scraggly look around the edges, it should be less intensive than a hair renderer. keep it up though, i'm lloking forward to the final.

ps. i believe that the ring u mentioned is a monocle

Pigwater... the ring is going to be a monicle.
Conundrum... haven't realy started on the details in the background yet, just wanted to sort out colours first.
Grooshka ... Glad you like the concept, apreciate it.
Cartesius... Thanks for looking in, always glad to here what you think.

Hi Handlebar, this is just wonderful! The expression on the servant's face is really brought out by his eyes...Have you tried a different iris colour on the master, it seem a little less effective, maybe a brighter ring around the outer iris will bring it out more...Keep it up man:thumbsup:

handlebar
04-27-2005, 02:47 PM
Cheers Daddymac, and thanks for looking in. The masters eyes are still on the to do list, got the iris texture painted but it needs a luminance map added to brighten up certain areas, thats why they look dark and lifeless at the moment.

Can't quite figure out the expression of the butlers face - does he know the rat is there before lifting the lid? I know well trained butlers are supposed to have a stone face, so perhaps that's what you aim for? Anyway, both characters plus rat is amazing - some of my favourites.

Nearly finnished the foreground now, just need to add a label to the winebottle. I think i'll call the wine 'Butlers Special Reserve'(Extra Dry) of course. will begin on the background now, and replace all the temp textures and add a bit more detail. I'm pretty happy with the overall atmosphere now, a few tweeks here and there and i'm close to finnishing. Phew.

Cartesius
05-07-2005, 03:43 PM
Great! I agree about the string in his hand, maybe just curve it down a little. I would also love to see some more punch in the colours, if you know what I mean? The whole image has a very smooth and almost fuzzy feeling so some more contrasts in the lighting (particularly on the main characters) would make the focus of the image clearer. Maybe some subtle DOF on the background as well?

Looking great!

I agree with Anders, I think it might be worth the trouble to make some experiments with the lights. Personally I think the image would look better with more defined shadows also. In interiors the shadows tend to be sharper.

But minor niggles really, the image is coming together very nicely.
