Latest Update: Coloring WIP: You asked for color....

I worked on some color and basic lighting today. Got a massive headache this afternoon, so I had to go away from it for a while. This is just a test/practice pass that I'm probably going to completely re-do. I'm just trying to break through my tablet-block. It's frustrating when I know I could be much faster and better working with traditional media... but alas, this is why I entered the contest to force myself to do a digital painting and get better with my tablet.

This is a quick thumbnail to work out some ideas going through my head.

The top one is a pharaoh overlooking thousands of slaves constructing a pyramid or temple.

The bottom one is a pharaoh in his throneroom surrounded by his various levels of servants, all witnessing a slave worker being whipped for making eye contact with the pharaoh's daughter or some similar crime.

I decided to go with the second idea, the Pharaoh with his servants. I moved around the composition around a little in this thumbnail. I also want to incorporate statues or atlantid collumns of Egyptian gods behind and above the Pharaoh.

I started sketching out this idea further in Photoshop.

I incorporated a preist, advising the Pharaoh, to show another level of servitude. I put the Queen lounging near the Pharaoh's feet. I don't know where I would put the concubines in this composition, so I might just leave them out. (I don't even know if concubines would be present in the throne room?)

I want to work out the backstory for this scene before I go much farther with it. If the peasant is being whipped for looking at the Pharaoh's daughter, she should probably be present.

I also want to find a better (more dynamic) point of view for this scene. Right now, the high and distant perspective sort of takes the viewer out of the situation. I want a little more intimate view, to force the viewer to feel like they are a participating witness.

I reworked the composition a bit. I added the concubines again, and also added the daughter on the right of the Pharaoh, and another servant in the foreground. The queen is now standing off near the balcony.

I am still working on the backstory, but I have basic emotions and motives for each character now.

The Pharaoh is simply exercising his power, and is angry at the peasant for disgracing his daughter and wants to make an example of him. The priest is advising the Pharaoh to offer the peasant as a sacrifice to the gods (as part of his service to them as well) The queen is displeased with the whole situation, she does not believe in tortuous punishment. She tries to remove herself from it, but cannot help but glance back. The daughter is in shock as this is the most brutal punishment she has ever witnessed, and is somewhat responsible for it. The soldier is honored to be able to serve the Pharaoh by punishing this criminal, and is enjoying exerting all his strength into the torture. The servant (in the right foreground) is in quiet horror, as she witnesses the wrath that the Pharaoh can execute on his own people. The guards are rather indifferent to the situation, barely watching the event out of the corners of their steadfast stares. Finally, the concubines are enjoying the show, getting aroused since they are used to experiencing the Pharaoh's brutality in bed.

great sketch and storyline. just a crit (hope u don't mind), the focus point doesn't seem dramatic enough, maybe a tighter crop so that the guy being punished could be more in focus... my 2 cents. all the best for your piece, as i think i'll look great after the details are added in. cheers. :)

I re-sketched the composition, adjusting the peasant so he is closer to the viewer. I also made him prone instead of arching back so he would not overwhelm the composition, and take importance away from the Pharaoh. His posture also changes the mood, to where the scene now is taking place later in the beating, where the peasant is near unconsciousness and collapse.

Thanks for the reply, Sloth. I agree about your suggestion. As you can see, I took your advice in my last update. I think his new pose is more dramatic, since he seems much more beaten, and is closer to the viewer. The new pose also helps fill the empty space that was there before, and his prone arch helps keep the viewer's eye flowing around the central characters.

I worked on cleaning up the perspective and lines for the room tonight. I also went ahead and defined the atlantid statues of Anubis and Horus which are holding up the roof slab and Sun Disk over the throne. Hopefully I will tackle some of the characters tomorrow, and start the line art milestone.

Looking good so far...just the one comment. Which pose are you going to use for the character bein whipped... i personally preferred the earlier one where the character is on their knees with their head arched back.
can't wait to see the finished product.

Thanks for the replies, y'all.

Wizard, CoryaArt & Dreamshark: I want to finish the lines before I get to far into colors... but I have some color tests I worked on today that I will post in a little bit. I just got Painter9 so I will be playing with that a lot when I go to colors.

Redfrog: I think I will be using the second pose, since it is more evocative of the pain of a brutal beating. The other pose I felt was dominating the composition too much. Even though the pharaoh is in the background, I want him to remain important. With the peasant down on the ground I feel it helps keep the eye moving around in a sort of elliptical flow around the composition... from him, up to the concubines, over the the pharaoh and the priest, then to the daughter, down to the soldier, and then down the whip back to the peasant. A second arching path goes around the peripheral characters as well. Here's a quick outline of what I feel this composition is doing:

http://www.malomations.com/taber/masterservant/composition.jpg

If I used the first pose, it would break up that flow. I think with some tweaks to the character's final positions, the composition will work well.

the1stAngel: I checked out yours and it's looking great. I love your sphinxes! I am glad we are doing different approaches to the Egyptian theme.

Updates coming soon.

The ancient Egyptian setting is a great idea, for it already makes think you of master/servant relationships. Your image looks nice so far. :)
My suggestions would be to enhance the atmosphere a bit more "dramatic" or doing a perspective from a frog's view... this could make the viewer feel more with the beaten servant. But however, this is great. :bounce:

Thanks, Angel. Yeah, I was really inspired at the beginning but then things fell apart at work and I have been spending the past couple of weeks looking for a job. So, that sort of took the wind out of my sails as far as finishing this for the challenge. I sill want to finish it, so maybe once I secure another job, I can work on it in the WIP section.

Thank you all for your support and encouragement. Maybe I will be able to finish the next challenge I join

edit: Angel: I just saw your finished work, and it it incredible! Awesome job! :applause:
