Working with the background mainly. Changed the Imp to emerald instead. Let me know what you think of the color scheme.

This time I am working on 2D entry & 3D entry because I feel the need to explore this idea in a traditional medium as well as 3D. I have been working over the last few days on a drawing which I will be basing my 2D entry on. It is designed as Elf Magi & Imp. I am planning to have quite a bit of fun painting the different surfaces designed to go into this by the end including gold, wood grains, wax and candle flames, energy orb, and many other elements.

This is my initial drawing... It is very free form I will be inking and painting it as things develop. I am still indeterminant in which coloring style I will choose. From dreamy to bold, airbrushed or oil painted... Decisions decisions...

Love the texture...is that just the paper?

I've always been amazed in all the Gygax-esque fantasy pictures...what technology did the men use to shave their beards so precisely? :)

Best of luck to ya man!

Still color mapping the image. Trying out the robe coloring scheme. What do you think?

Aethyrprime
03-29-2005, 01:42 AM
First I soft shade the image using the pencil. Basically use light lines and then rub them using the oils from the tip of my finger to smear the pencil. Then I scan it directly into photoshop. I adjust the image>Adjust>Levels and set the shadow point more to the right and the mid-tone is balanced to bring out the noise in the shading. Then I overlap color using linear burn on top of the pencil. This image was never inked. It would change the textured quality of it. Thanks for the reply. More to come...

Already far ahead, nice start. Did you mean for the paper to be wrinkled? Don't change it, it adds character to the picture. Good luck juggling 2 entries.

Aethyrprime
03-29-2005, 03:32 AM
yes I did.. I have thought about using an aged photographic effect for this image. Make it look ancient from a book of legend or something. You know what I mean?

Aethyrprime
03-29-2005, 03:33 AM
Oh yeah I an used an old piece of paper because the texture had become rough which would add to the effect of aged photo. I am just glad that I have piles of old drawing paper. Some had changed colors this one didn't but it thankfully did become more coarse.

Still working out the colors. This is very far from finished in anyway. I just like having my colors mapped out from the very start.

this is very nice..what are you using as color???

Aethyrprime
03-29-2005, 01:57 PM
Since this is a cg contest I am trying to do everything outside of the initial sketch in the computer. I use a 12x12 wacom tablet. For now I am doing this all in Photoshop. Later on I plan on moving the image to Zbrush 1 (the non 3D Zbrush) for dynamic surface painting with advanced nibs. At the moment each color and section of color is on its own layer in photoshop. I have everything grouped in sets and depending on the type of mixture between pencil shading and color. I use the color burn, lighten, linear burn, color and multiply layer modes with 100% opaque colors being painted into the masked areas. It is a trial and error method because sometimes you will want to make the black lines be colored lines so I might use a lighten or screen mode to achieve that such as the little energy ball.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the support all. I truely appreciate it! :)

Working Twice as hard I see, the only thing that I see that I don't like is the hand in the forgound the fingers are to small, its always looks best to over size the hands and feet.

Just marking off the wood areas, still deciding on the color scheme / type of woods. Polished vs Fossilized.

I like how this is going, its got an art deco feel to it.

Here are some quick suggestions:

Maybe you can swap the orb from the right to the left hand of the imp. Then maybe add a glow to the orb which illuminates the mans shoulder and face. The illumination could be done in a stylized manner to match the rest of illustrations flat/tableau feel. I think it could add some "pop" to the picture. Just a suggestion.

looks good though

Thanks for the input... But there is no airbrushing done on this yet. Its just a color test. Judging from everyones input though I am considering on whether I should keep it very, "rustic" feeling.

Thanks man, I appreciate it.

I have been asking myself the question. How much cg-looking stylizations should I use or just refine the details there but should I maintain the ancient look and feel or should I try to "cg" it since this is a cg contest. Any advice would be appreciated. I have used only cg to create it except the raw drawing.

Hhhhmmmm, 2D and 3D......... how much time and energy do you have...?! Looks great and yes, think you should keep a rustic feel to the picture. It has both a religious and ethereal feel to it. Fantastic stuff so far. Claireabella

In think you should try to get it to appear ancient. Most people lwant thier work to look traditional, and since this appeares to be traditional, I say keep it that way. Of course you can always experiment justto see.

Thanks. I have been working alot on my 3D entry today but I will get back to my 2D sometime tonight I am sure. I guess my main question I am still trying to answer is whether or not I should paint over this (the black lines) or keep the drawing as a part of the final image.

Hey Richard,
Nice looking image so far, I think I would try playing with the brown wood color on the left edge to be a darker color and change the dark blue background to a lighter color. Just an opinion. Hey if I have time I might enter the 2d challenge, I really need to learn how to draw using the computer , I can draw with a pencil and paper but the whole process to create a finished painting in the computer is what I need to learn.
Good luck with this.

Nekura - Thanks bro. I appreciate the encouragement... you keep working hard at it too.

Baron Impossible - Thanks. As a gemini my style changes dramatically from day to day... always with me what cannot be done or at least hasn't been done yet... if there is such a thing ;)

mmoir - thanks for the suggestion I will take that into consideration. Darker it will be.

Virtuoso - You betta believe it! :)

tilite - Several people think it looks book cover'ish, I just hope thats a good thing ;)

oro - Ok, will do, just getting my 3D side caught up a bit...

Mordalles - lol, yeah I did not realize that they were both same drop down... doh! Anyway, thanks for the input.. lol, I did not really think about it that way. I drew it for my girlfriend since my 3D entry is about death. This is more... "pretty"... ;)

More coming later... sorry for the delay...

Interesting spider brooch holding his robe together although I am not sure that it looks strong enough for the job.

What can you tell me about expression? To me he looks either bored, a bit disgusted, brooding, or contemplative I think. Maybe thats you point though.
I really like that you are showing another side of your talents on this, I am proud of you. :wavey:

Yes, very nice, but I can't say I'm extremely impressed with the idea or the actual theme of the picture. HOWEVER, I must add a nicer tone to my post. The look of the picture itself is unbelievable!! Simply incredible! I know my laptop is really nice but it's not so nice that it makes things look better than they actually are and yours looks like a work of art integrated onto a piece of cloth. Literally, an image worked into somebody's dress or cape or something. I can seriously see this on some ancient monk's or wizard's cloak. Unreal! Keep up the good work, Dead...
I'll try to be all encouraging next time or, at the least, to be more constructive on my criticisms.

I posted in my 3D thread I will be moving these to the WIP section in the very near future. Thanks for all the kind words and support. Ode to de flu.... it comes when you least want it. It takes from you what you need the most. It leaves you with barely anything to choose. But in the end.. the flu cannot beat you... ;)

Anyway I hope to see you real soon.
