View Full Version : character - anatomy hint needed
Hi. I want to draw a man standing on his knees with the head down and the hands hanging upwards (gonna draw something holding them in the air, but later). The view is almost 100% from the front. I really don't know much about drawing anatomically correct, so please, could anyone help me with drawing the general outline of the head? I tried it but it looks very wrong. Btw, it's my first drawing with GIMP, I just installed it 2 hours ago :)

the human head isnt perfectly round. you should try making it slightly longer
Yap, I just modified it and I edited the first post to refresh the image. I think I'm getting the hang of Gimp, now only if I could find (if there is) the panning tool (the hand in Photoshop, I think) because now I'm scrolling it like a web page :)
I'm not going for 100% anatomically correct, because I don't know how (but I'm trying). I'm just looking out for major errors, and trying for a compromise with an grotesque style (including overgrown bones).
I really need some critique with the shape of the ears and the back of the head right now (I'm going to continue with the arm now and probably the front of the head).

I think I can try and give you some help with the back of the head. First off, I think you could still elongate the head a bit more. The head is about the same size back to front as it is top to bottom. Also, the outside of the browline is a little sharper, so the front of the head looks more flat than you have so far. You know, what really might help you is to find a picture of the human skull. That'll give you a good idea of the underlying structure of the head. Keep working at it, you'll get it.

The shoulder blades are also too round and should be wider. I think that in this pose they should be protruding more near the spine and slowly be lees protruding towards the shoulder.

this is the help in steps: take a picture of yourself at the same pose or someone else trasport the info into your computer and compare the picture with the foto. that is all

This pose isn't possible, the spine can't bend forward as much as this. Try it yourself; if you put your chin on your chest and imagine what it looks like from the position you're paining from you would see more of the face and less of the back of the head.
There's two possibilities to correct this:
The first is tilt the chest forward more. You'd have to apply shortening to the torso and show more of the top of the shoulders.
The second is to tilt the head. You'd see less of the back of his head and more of his forehead.
Besides, this would probably increase the value of the picture. The're 'd be more to look at.

MtFR I see the pose your trying to create. the only possible why you are going to keep the head in the position would be to picture the body looking at it from above. i remember seen an artist on this form before with a similar idea. he had a eastern dragon wrapped around the body of a man being crucified. i had the image but dont know were it is now Sorry. Can anybody else remember this image??
Thanks for the input guys. I'll work on it. Identity, I don't remember that picture... I'm not gonna draw him crucified, but in a torture machine... well it doesn't matter, the pose is similar. I'll be back :)
