Help me DESTROY MY PORTFOLIO.

I'm about to send a lot of these along with my demo reel and I would like to know what you REALLY think.

Please, be as straight forward as you can be, if you feel any piece (or all of them) SUCKS please TELL ME SO, if you think some are mediocre, good, whatever, please TELL ME SO. I want to make job applications with this and they won't touch their heart so I better hear it here first.

Shall we then? DESTROY THE PORTFOLIO!

wow mate, these are all very impressive.

for my standpoint, i would say they all are fantastic. each one tells a story. i wouldnt get ride of any of them.
just becasue some of them are old and you may not think much of them as you once did, dosnt mean someone else wount think them great.
so keep em all, ;) thats my verdict. ;)

all of them clearly shows you are a well rounded artist.

now, tho, if you were trying to get into a spesific field, well then i would get ride of all the ones that dont play a role there. i say this casue i know fomr experience, that some companies dont like well rounded people, as bad as it sounds.

well thats all i can think of at any rate.
very nice portfolio, and good luck.
you are one great artist.

etom out.....

When building a portfolio, you have to really wow the person hiring you. Mediocre won't do now that artists are a dime a dozen.

With that in mind, I will tell you which of your PAGES you should keep. I don't mean you have to toss the others, but these are the ones that show your tallent from the best angle. Counting from the top 3,4,7,12,14,15,16. Number 1 is almost there (you should color it). You should still show that you can do a great range of art types. So you might want to take your less impressive pieces and work on them some more.

My least favorite is number 9 (the troll looking thing). IMHO that is one you should consider getting rid of.

You seem to do best at drawing real things (like the old man, #4). Your fantasy characters are less impressive. Your cartoonish stuff is average. Play to your strengths. Include some more drawings akin to 3 and 4. You should try painting over one of them (or a similar one). Your 3D models represent a range (looks like you have learned 3D modeling in colledge or you took a course and these are renders from your projects). Number 14 is excellent, 15 is average, 16 is good. I don't care for the rest. Also, I have seen your 3D short. It was alright. I liked the fish in the beginning. I didn't like the character animation.

Lastly, if you have time, do more work before submitting this. Put more stuff in that represents your current level.

I hope this has been helpful. In about 2.5 years I will be facing the same dillema as I build my own portfolio. By then I hope to become much better. There is a lot of talent out there and being anything special is getting more difficult every day. Strive for perfection and never allow yourself to believe that you have reached the peak of your ability. An artist never stops growing.

GOOD LUCK with your job hunt. I have no idea how the job market looks in Mexico. My review of your portfolio was based on USA standards.

PS: What field are you in?

youve got some talent! but as with all of us, you have room for improvement. You obviously have a ton of talent and a great mind. You could DEFFINETLY use an anatomy class though. Those monster designs look cool, but they look extreamly fake because theres like 10 muscles where there should only be 3. even with "Imaginatomy" you still need to follow basic principals for things to look right.

I think your compositions on some of the more finished pieces seem a little bit clunky... the old man and the ship especialy. but mabie im just not a fan of collage. Everything just seems way overbearing and busy. Your character studies are awsome though! I realy like your Yellow dragon and your bumble bee character. Do you work as a professional artist? You would probably have no trouble finding freelance work with game companies and such. Just gota get a list of about 100 companies and 2 or 3 will probably open your e-mail :) . Thats how i got my concept job. I wrote to about 50 and only one called me back. but they hired me, so hey!

anyway, good portfolio. Get some anatomy knowlage and there will be no stoping you.

Good luck!

Don't have time to critique them all now! Maybe later. First of the second one and fourth one should definitely go in, they're excellent. Very good execution and ideas, they'll land you a job allright.

Good luck with it, I think you'll get there.:)

Remember that the overall impression of your portfolio may be no better than your worst piece. For this reason, I think that for most portfolios less is more. If you are not sure what kind of art that the client wants, then include only one or two of each category, with a few extra to emphasize strength or passion in one particular area.

If it was me, I would cut it to 8 pieces total: 4 & 8 for traditional, 10 & 12 for digital, and 14, 15 & 16 for 3D. And the compsition and style of 20 also says a lot about your graphic design abilities. The advice I've always tried to follow for a portfolio presentation is to use your best 2 for the first and the last. IMO these would be #10 and #4.

I hope this is helpful. I think your work shows that you have talent and dedication, so keep up the good work, and good luck!

This is what I was talking about!!!

First of all THNX a lot! All of you who replied gave me valuable info that I will surely use, I think this is what these forums are all about.

Thanks to your comments I decided to let go several pieces, you are right if they are not THAT good then WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY DOING IN HERE?!?! I also decided to take some anatomy lessons and research, I have been losing my touch there and I have to get it back.

Once again THANKS, really, best regards to you all and be sure that you helped a lot here.

Olá Cesar,

Without words...

Is your inspiration RPG? I like this universe a lot...

Congratulations!!

you obviously have talent, as in you're a very, very talented artist. however, i'm not really seeing innovation or anything truly unique. i don't mean to be rude, but perhaps it's time to kind of move out of that RPG style of imagery and into something made of your own inspiration, because you obviously have the skills to get that far.
