Hi,

I am having a very strange problem with Raytrace Shadows.

Parts of the shadow get cut off in batch output images that render fine in tests. It looks similar to when dmap bias is not set properly, however I am using ray tracing!

has anyone experienced any thing like this before?

hi,

I also found some prbs with ray-traced shadows.
Perhaps try to increase the ray-bias (render globals -> raytracing)

This usually solves the prb.

Hope this helps...

thanks, I'll try that.

What worries me is that the shadows appear fine in the test render but do not render out properly in the batch. This happens with glows as well.

I'll set out a batch to render overnight and then find that the shadows are not done properly...pretty frustrating especially close to the deadline. Does anyone have any tips on setting biases?

ive noticed sometimes that lights "break" I once had a really screwed shadows and shading and i took a long time playing with settings and turning lights on/off to single out what light caused the problem. In the end i just deleted the bad light and recreated it using the same settings and everything was fixed.

hope this helps some

Yes, doing it over again seems to be a common work-around. I've had to do that several times in the past, but I wonder if there is particular setting that I mistakenly adjusted. (knowingly or even unknowingly)

As one of my Italian Arch. Professors said in Rome after looking at my project:

Interesting. Ive seen a similar problem with Raytraced Shadows on a Directional Light. It was fine alone but if you added a subtle ambient light the bump map on my textures would disappear where the directional's shadows rested. Im still trying to fix the problem. I'll have to try these suggestions.

I am also using directional lights in my scene. so I thought I'd describe the set up in case my observations helped with your problem. (or someone else has some suggestions):

I have two directional lights lighting the a wall, a main light and a fill.

Then I have a bird flying towards the wall and veering off.
The bird has two directional lights linked and parented to it.

The camera follows the bird towards the wall.

It seems that the shadows on the wall start disappearing as the bird and/or the camera approach the wall...yet the bird's directional lights are not affecting the wall! Could it have something to do with the camera?

At this point I am ready to fake it with AfterFX. but I thought I'd post this anyways. Maybe someone who has the secrets of directional lights knows what is going on.

you shouldnt have to parent the directional lights to the birds. they should do the job you want no moving at all. maybe thats part of the problem?

particles!...did I mention my particles?

I talked to someone at Maya Support and they found that my shadows rendered fine when they hid my particles.

The funny thing is that they are hardware particles and shouldn't have affected the render anyways.

At any rate I faked stuff in AfterFX and the animation is already in the can.

Thanks anyways for all the suggestions.
