Very nice that one.
Just one problem i had with it. Somepeople might find it weird.
Is she suppposed to be a black women? When i first saw the head i thought it was a black women, but when i saw the full picture, the head was of a black women, but when you go down to the legs, i felt they were a bit whitish?
Weird i know but thats just what my eyes and brain saw. Dont kill me. Blame my brain.

Amazing work man. I'd love to know how long it took you to make and the polycount. The only crit I have is as someone said before about adding some more specularity 'wetness' to the teeth. Great job on the modelling and texturing, one of the best skin textures I've ever seen. Nice pose too.:applause:

funny comment ... can I send you a outline of my leg and you tell me what ethnic I am ... just joking.
I even see what you mean, but for me the face is also special due to the swolen area arround her mouth, cause of her vampire teeth.
Would be interesting to hear abbout the modeling/production history ... defenitly worth a cgnetworks artikle on the making of.

wow ..she is really sexy!

for a CG bird shes damn fit. this is an amazing achievement dude. you should be very proud. the realism is sublime and the SSS has really been put to good use. just the right amount.
i'd let her suck my blood pretty much all the time. as long as it was a two way thing ;)
well done

03-28-2005, 01:46 PM
Aaaa Frazetta...
the face is freat, and the pose is close to thoses frazetta like to draw, but.. (my two cents)
the whole thing is a bit off..
she looks like she is falling or something.. and the body could have been pushed a little more.. it's too much the classic cg body if you see what i mean ;)
frazetta girls have more curves..
and legs should be a little longer...
and last, the flesh should be whiter..
vampirella is a nice vampire, but still a vampire who doesnt see the light of the sun :P
that said, i really like it ;)
good job!

03-28-2005, 02:10 PM
Nice work, but I do agree with pascal, the pose looks kinda off, perhaps you should put more "weight" in the pose, the upper lip looks a bit iffy, dunno why though and the eyelashes could use some more chaos and perhaps a bit wider at the bottom and smaller at the tip (if that's possible) I would also add some more tweaking to the hair, if that's textured on geo I would increase the bump, if its some hair plugin, highlights should be sharper I think, also a bit more chaos in the hair (more hairs crossing over eachother) could really make this more appealing.
I definatelly like the modeling, very organic, nice shapes. The texturing is also great, something about the highlights on the shading that annoys me, but again, dunno what, that's a good thing since it's not THAT obvious :)
Nice work, stored in my art folder!

Wow! This is fantastic! I just have one question, was Poser used in the workflow? If it was, this is definitely one of the greatest examples of how to use Poser the correct way that I've seen and definitely one of the best uses of Baron Vlad Harkonnen's Vampirella outfit (http://www.renderosity.com/homepage.ez?Who=Baron%5FVlad%5FHarkonnen) ever.
http://www.celshadeartists.com/vamp1.jpg http://www.celshadeartists.com/vamp2.jpg
I myself have over 6 years experience with Poser (just take a look at my website, all my 3D character work used poser somewhere in the pipeline) and if Poser was used in the workflow, it's a nice first step in proving high quality images can be created using Poser in the production pipeline and make it to the front page of CGTalk:applause:

03-28-2005, 04:46 PM
i like the model and the skin/materials
i'm not so keen on the pose, but i think it is acceptable
i don't agree with pascal blanche who says:"the whole thing is a bit off" (even if he adds he likes it, i think the armpits and chest (breasts) are really good
anyways very nice indeed
i hope poser wasn't used for this still, cos poser just gives u a ready made human, there is no point in using it, except on a very tight deadline for characters far away, not that the quality isn't nice, but it still is prefabricated, takes the fun out of cgi
good luck on future projects

First of all lets not take anything away from Guanny's pic. It's OUTSTANDING! Second of all, quotes like the one above show that the poster has never used Poser. Because this is the "ready made human" you get with the app:
http://www.celshadeartists.com/pose1.jpg
So to go from this to Guanny's Vampirella pic is amazing. Poser has thousands of morphing capabilities and magnet tools to push and pull verts and faces. I also use Z-Brush and its workflow is very similar to Poser's. Start with default base figure, then push, pull and paint. For everyone thinking Poser is some sort of one step, 'click here to make hot render', please show me that button.

Well based on the information presented by Darkskills in his previous post
Looks like we need to see a wire to quell public opinion or if it's Victoria 3 or 2 then say so. I mean damn all the way down to the earrings? and boots. Regardless I dont have a problem with what anyone uses, hell mud, clay, stone, paint, whatever as long as the final product is inspiring and beautiful which this is, then its art to me.
If this is a Poser model then it is a feat to behold because most poser users go with the base model and no tweaks......post a wire man.

First of all, this is a masterpiece!
Then I have to say something. In the last page this thread has become to a "is he using poser discussion". I don't understand this. Why not just giving critique to his work which is marvelous! Also it was said not to post the wires I hope Daniel (what a nice name) will soon do so, so that we can all see if it is poser or not! Even if he should have used a poser model, which I don't think, it is still hard work to let it look like this.
So come on, just critisise his work!

03-28-2005, 06:43 PM
If it's a Poser model, he really did a nice job tweaking it! Note the joints especially near the inner elbows and the knees...those are very well done. But for those who don't know, the latest versions of models out of Poser (v3 Vickie and Michael) aren't bad and if you know how to tweak them (using magnets, morph putty, even the dial adjustments...which now cover tons of variables, or even just modify the obj files in another program) and do textures or even use photo textures, they could easily pass for some of the better work that's on display here. Adjusting the models does take time so it's not just click or dial and presto. There are good Poser artists and poor Poser artists, same as for any program.
More and more I think it's what you do with a program or programs. The finished result. And, BTW, nothing says you have to model everything yourself. We shouldn't become zealots. Everything is just a tool(s).
I think the Poser artists posting here have a valid point to a degree on the costume, which is why the Poser discussion has come up, but his version does capture the flavor of the comic more and better IMHO.
I also agree with Anobrin...good point on being honest. But I don't think he used a Poser model.

Nice work! I think it's an exclellent model. I agree the pose is a bit off, but not because of balance, but because the "toes-in" or pigeon-toe pose is more of an anime pose, and not something you'd ever see Frazetta do. The hands look a bit under-developed, but this is a very, very nice piece of work. Great job!

Using Poser is not of highest difficulty. The main goal of Poser is to be easy for use.
People are using Poser, and most of them will mention it.
But some don't - why?
This is the second time in this forum that there is suspission that a artist is using a tool without indicating the usage of another tool, which makes the workflow much faster, if not easier.
Why than at all to mention any programs being used - if this fact is not important? Why?
Why not just to say -it is 2D and -it is 3D?
Let us take it a step farther and simply define:
Leonardo’s work as just = 2D and
Michelangelo’s work as just = 3D.
Let the next generation forget the specifics of their techniques, their technical innovation and with this their originality.
"They don't need to know this - this is not important - it's just art"
- say some in this forum.
Thank God not all of us think so - those once who take tools very seriously.
Let us take a step farther and say that the old Disney animation masters are not good, because many animators of today are doing the same things and even better.
This wrong assumption is possible to make, if we NOT take in consideration the tools what they and nowadays animators used.
This is a big mistake people - we do need this information.
If this information is not important - what than is important - just the message??
For textures of the model, Photoshop work, v-ray this is very good work.
For model, cloth and posing - I have my doubts, after seeing strong similarities of the woman's body and the suit in DarkSkills posts.

03-28-2005, 07:31 PM
The whole "Poser" discussion started because someone noticed that the costume in a poser model was the same as the costume used in this image.
Did you never read the Vampirella Comic books as a kid? They are the same costume, because that *is* the costume she wore. ( http://www.splashcomics.de/html/rezensionen/hefte/vampirella/cover_01_25.htm )
My critique is that I don't remember Vamprilla having a tan. I seem to remember her with very pale skin (most vampires don't tan very well :) )
My other critique would be that the motion blur on the bats looks too exagerated. It throws off the realism and makes the bats look 2 dimensional.
Just checked the link I posted, and I guess I remembered wrong. She does have a tan, or naturally darker skin than I remember

The vampirella costume design has been around for a long time. This is a vampirella image, so why not use the original vampirella costume design and colors? Just because he used the same design and colors as has been used for eons doesn't mean to me that he must have used Poser assets... even if they are available.

the first reply about poser just asked if it was a poser image because he might have not known about the costume, i don't think he was pointing fingers. all this talk about poser is really taking away from the artwork displayed here. the focus is on a topic that does not relate to the above media. it was just a guy asking a question, that's all

03-28-2005, 07:52 PM
Well let's ask the question that most people arent even addressing. Like its been said by some, who cares if its Poser or not its still art.
What I would like to know is would people have a problem with an image making the front page of CGTALK with knowledge of Poser being used in the pipeline? Considering the fact that you still have to make textures and whatnot...what's the big deal?

Interesting...I was just looking at the one of the original Vampirella comics this morning, issue 52 from July 1976. Nice outfit. :) The arm cuff was on the other arm, tho.

I would have nothing agains this
- because it still just a tool.
And the work is very good.
It's like using the Poser characters for animation.
But I would not credit myself with the creation of the characters - nobody does this when creating a short (there is always a animator and a modeller if they are separate) -
Why should we not follow this example in 3D, when it is done with credits in feature production?
But again, very good work, deserves it's place!

Using Poser is not of highest difficulty. The main goal of Poser is to be easy for use.
People are using Poser, and most of them will mention it.
But some don't - why?
This is the second time in this forum that an artist is using a tool without any indication that it is in a bigger part created with another tool, which makes the workflow much faster, if not easier.
....
This is a big mistake people - we do need this information.
If this information is not important - what than is important - just the message??
For textures of the model, Photoshop work, v-ray this is very good work.
For model, cloth and posing - I have my doubts, after seeing identical features of the woman's body and the suit in DarkSkills posts.
If you can't see the differences between that Poser outfit, and the geometry in this model then you aren't looking very hard. Before going off and lighting the torches, you might want to look a bit closer.

No-one said you didn't have the right to talk, but that you might want to look closer. I don't agree there are enough similarities between the two models to warrant accusing the guy for using Poser and not listing it in the tools used.

I find it somewhat amusing that on a board where folks chomp at the bit to decry Poser, someone comes along with an image that is *possibly* Poser-based, and everyone just sorta shuffles their feet and says, "Who cares? She's HOT!"
I'll have to remember these critiques the next time folks get all POd over someone using a Poser model in an image.

Hey Guanny,
Nice Vampirella likeness. I have been itching to make a new 3D character and this model has just raised my inspiration. One small crit I have, and it is so minor, is the bat is a little blurry, but you spent so much time on this model it barely matters
AWESOME JOB!! PURELY AWESOME!!

Overall a great piece. Only let down would be the ground she's standing on. Doesn't seem to tie in with the background. Maybe make the contrast between the rocks and the background a little less harsh?

I agree its a wonderful piece but as someone who frequents Renderosity once in a while I could pick up the "poser-ish" look just from the expression on the thumbnail on the frontpage, just couldn't fool me. The main issue wish Poser models is that the base model was not modeled by the artist himself. We could argue that poser is like another tool in a 3D application, but when the main focal point of the image is created with a premade asset not originally created by the artist, it can be a little disapointing. I would have praised the poster for strong anatomical accuracy but when ym thoughts of poser-ish look was confirmed I can only say that is is a very nice piece overall. I will still give this piece 4 stars though because I truly enjoy it.

I do think it's important to list what tools, etc. are used. I just don't think it should be the total focus. Is the end result artistic, or is it crap? That's what is important, otherwise nobody could rate this. Is it great because it's 3DMax, LW, Maya, Animation Master, or even Poser...or is it great because a piece of art looks great and conveys something. This work is very good and worthy of the front page. Yes, if a Poser model was used, it should've been listed. But perhaps the anti-Poser bias evidenced here made the poster hesitate if it was indeed a Poser based model.
The new Poser 6 models look good (except for Jessi's knees) so I'm sure people will be assuming some works in the future are derived from them.

Okay, make way for the Vampi expert lol.
I just checked on my comic collection - the cover of #19 (by Gonzalez) is where the famous 'Vampi with bat' image first made its debut. It was hugely popular and a couple of months later (in #21) it was offered as a poster. In that original, she points straight at you with the bat on her finger.
#19 was incidentally also the first Vampi Album (1972).
I checked on Baron Vlad harkonen's Vampirella Suit for Victoria 3 (for Poser). I have both the Vicki2 and Vicki3 versions, both are cut the same.
Now it is entirely obvious that Moreno's render in this thread is not in any way based on the BVH suit - it is rather based on the Vampi original. The cut on the hip, at the lower belly, and also the curly collar (the #19 pic doesn't show it, but other Vampi originals do).
BVH's suit has a completely flat collar and is cut deep at the hip (not rounded like here)
I can't quite judge whether the image itself is done in Poser (unlikely) or if it is a Poser mesh rendered in another app - this may or may not be the case.
Moreno's Vampi (the concept is apparently based on this #19 Gonzalez rendition of Vampi) is not as leggy as Gonzalez' version, but then a number ot other artists (amongst them Frazetta) pictured Vampi as much shorter and curvier, so figure-wise she is not in any way 'off'.
Her coloring (swarthy skin) is off, for sure. Vampi 'should be' pale, as someone pointed out. Being a vampire.
Her outfit is perfect. Her pose is good but the leg is a bit too far off - Vampi was always 'elegant' in her stance, never 'gauche'.
Being a Poser guy myself, I have nothing against Poser renders or Poser meshes - so that is not an issue for me really- But I wanted to give you the info I have at hand.
Whichever way you look at it, this is a very good render indeed.
Unfortunately I can't post an image here to show the original and the Poser suit. I have however done so in the Poser Forum at Renderosity for those of you who are members there.

I think the darker complexion is OK myself. Vampi does look different by each artist who's been paid to visualize her. Some darker...some paler....and she's supposed to be alien rather than undead in stories I've read. I agree with the costume differences you've pointed out.
I've loved Vampirella since the 70s. This is a great rendition.

Very good image.. The skin shading really gives a fleshy look, good work.
As for the critics:I think the DOF is overdone in foreground and and this suddenly turns the image into that of a miniature scale set. If possible, reduce the DOF effect on the rocks in the foreground (BG is just fine.)

Really good piece....
Still, better if Poser was mentioned used in the process. I can understand the negative opinions towards that because he only mention Max as the 3D tool, which leave an assumption that the model was built from scratch....:D
One thing throws me, though....
The lighting made it look like she was photographed in the studio with a fake BG. there is no integration with the BG lighting condition..... You know, like those comps in SW EP1.

I was wondering how it was that a finished work had 8 pages of replies, but now I know... someone mentioned poser.
This seems to be the content of the posts: "good job, but you used poser"
I find this a little ridiculous given that the "evidence" that poser was used has been a whole bunch of people saying, "wah wah, it looks like poser was used!" As far as I've read, and I've only read the thread twice, so maybe I missed it somehow, but the artist hasn't said whether or not he used poser. So... where is this evidence that poser was used? Really, this is on par with the much loved Monty Python witch scene.

Excellent work, It's always interesting to see classic pop culture icons interpreted in the new medium of 3D. This piece grabbed my attention right away because it didn't suffer from the typical stiff/sterile feel of 3D works. There's a sense of dynamicism that matches the well-known classici Vampirella 2D pieces.

I´m sorry to have been late in answering, I have a problem with my site.
I have put these images of the wire in a site of a friend of mine.
It seems that my post always bring polemic, already I am getting used.
I did´nt use poser, have used my model tundra as a base, collapsed with one step of meshsmooth and fine tuned with z-brush.
This is the base mesh:

this is a cool image
whether he used poser is of no "real importance",it doesn't make the image less good
it is important only if he is trying to be a modeller or is looking for work
if he used it he should mention it
the use of poser is important to know, if u have a whole base mesh and texture (unwrapped model what a blessing) then ur work is a lot easier
some guy said that poser doesn't have a magic button for cool images, yes that may be true, but it gives u a huge advantage: all the base modelling and unwrapping is done for u (not to mention the ready made textures u can modify), so u can concentrate on the details. this said, u can't compare an artist who uses poser and an artist who creates his whole model from scratch, it is unfair
if u are looking for work the use of poser adds cost to the company that u work for (if u don't mention it they won't expect that cost, although it is small) and they may expect u to make something less human, then u will have a problem.
i think the poser discussion should end, just mention such things next time to avoid these discussions from starting....
so u like bob ?

Excellent picture.
Although I feel unworthy to crit- looking at the high-res version the eyelashes seem to be a bit uniform in length, the inside of the nostrils look a bit sharp and as someone else stated the exaggerated DoF makes it look more like a small scale model. Apart from these minor issues this is superb and the skin texture is very impressive.
I can see where people got the Poser idea from as it does have that nearly perfect/polished look. I guess that's what you get from accurate modelling though.

Great modeling work you have here. Don't worry about the Poser comments, people will always try to find something wrong with a nice piece of work. It's actually a compliment in disguise.

Well, in my opinion, some people (you know who you are) should post an apology here. This is work of a very high quality, and you have to be an idiot to think this is Poser. The mesh would have to be adapted to such a degree that it's nearly faster to create one's own.

What's this guy got to do to get in the choice gallery? Between Tundra and Vamparella I'm starting to think the judges either have a bias against "pin-up" images or Guanny himself.
Here's a tip if you want to get a gold medal, next time just post a close up of her face, apparently too much skin can distract people from noticing how good your work is.

I don`t know, what`s the rules getting into the cgchoice gallery. But what is true, that many outstanding artowork left out, while many below the average got in.
My colleague told me that it`s a shame that any kind of troll, or orc, or surreal image can get into the gallery.
I see many simple radiosity renders in the gallery, without any kind of artistic work.
I think this image is one of the best, and it`s a really excellent adoptation of the classical artwork of Vallejo, and Frazetta, and the others.
I give this image the Jester`s Choice award. :applause:

Model, excelente. Texturing, lighting too. Two things the bothers me, the first thing I though when I saw it was: "what is that pose all about?". She´s standing in a way I´ve never seen anyone before, it looks very unreal. And the right hand isn´t helping at all. So, having that character all set up, with textures and everything, I think studyng the pose a little better and work on it´s realism is a must. And the other thing it´s the comp with the background. Maybe it´s a matter of taste, but it doesnt fit too well (sorry not being able to point out exactly why, it just looks a little odd). The bats have way too much mblur in the wings.
An impresive image, high quality model and textures, not to mention rendering. Fix that pose bro!!

One of the best full body models I have ever seen. Not because it is 100% real life, but because of the amazing details and the care put into every little bit. I love the pose because it is not a pose, not a way someone stand when they know someone is watching, more a natural "Ooops, kinda slippery rocks here" way of standing.
But what blew me away completly, was the veins in the upper thigh. It made it so amazingly real, I open the balcony door, and cleaned my neck, then sat down waiting.

excellent piece!!!
I positively love the top pic of the skin shader render post....couldn't be any more perfect had she been standing in front of me!!!
Amazing how the poser quibble ended after the mesh post.
I personally don't care how an artist arrives at his final. Well, with the exception of when it's excellent then I wanna know the how to's to learn from, but even still, the how-to's are for learning.....not picking apart the you cheated or you didn't do this or that....screw that.
You created an amazing piece of art! How ya got there....yeah I wanna know so I can learn from you, but aside from that....don't care....prefer instead to be amazed at the creative process that brought the final pic, the work of art, the thoughts, actions behind the scenes, am not gonna criticize Michelangelo's choice of tools, rather I am gonna enjoy how he used the tools he had, his thought processess in creating with the tools in reach, and most of all, am gonna for sure damn well enjoy the end product, no matter how it was created.
blah blah blah.
Daniel, ya did a damn fine job of recreating a little piece of history! Be proud!

Great job and nice work on the shader!!!
Could you show us a grab of the map channels in the vray material as i am interesterd to know what maps you used for reflection etc, and what kind of render settings you used.
Cheers, Great job once again

Good piece of art.
I liked the pose you made it, it's quite unusual and overall it's very well balanced.

Looking forward to see your "making of Vampirella". It's an excellent picture and you've created an excellent female model as well. And I'm also curious about the technical shader stuff, geeky as I am! ;)

Nice one tio!
I agree there is something wrong about the pose... I think her body is sopouse to have the weight in her left leg... but the leg dosnt show all that weight on it. Plus-> the left foot/boot is in a very unconfortable position because of the rocks ramp up and down.
Pues eso tio... que la pierna izquierda se ve rara, yo creo que si la abres hacia su izquierda y apoyas el talon, quedaria mucho mas guapa.
You are the man!

Good image, the woman, the vats, and the background is good although according to me it should be darken to creates a more mysterious athmosphere.

Well the model is from poser

I kinda thought he's already shown that he'd built her himself.
I've never seen a poser model that well built, maybe poser has got alot better since i last saw it.
Either way, its still a nice image and the shader work and lighting is very nice, but personally i don't think its a poser model.
Cheers.

Actually a wireframe could be a proof, but I think it was discussed earlier in this thread. At least the cloth is NOT from poser, it`s a relatively authentic Vampirella suit, and differs enough to one that is available to Poser.
Please give us more exact proof, because it`s not evidence, but ranting.

Mr ZukeZuko? What do you think?

Its a bit confuzing
so did he used poser model/rig
or not?
i mean some people here said so
if its his model
i am wrong and very sorry for what i said.

There were folks saying that it`s poser model. If you look at the wire, it`s obviuous that it`s NOT poser model
I think that`s clear, you were wrong.

Very Nice. I have always been a fan of that character (you can see why). My only comment is the fact she looks a little plastic, especially her arms. A more weathered skin tone can bring the character out even more. Other than that great!
this is awesome! You are a great modeler, nice pose, she 's sexy!

Okay, the skin shader is the best I've ever seen. I dont even wanna know how long it took to get it "right".
Moreno has got mad skillz!
He owes it to the 3d World to keep making these AMAZING images. It really behond anything I've seen towards hyper-real 3d imagery.
I'm definately a fan.

i absolutely LOVE her body. just the pose and the muscularity of her body is just so badass. she seems like a badass. and i totally dig the skinshader. i just looked on your page and it says "under construction" that kinda sucks. i was wanting to check out some more renders of beautiful women. which btw, her boobs are extremely gigantic and gorgous. i really love this vampirella model. i will have this as my background for days to come.
great f*cking awesome job.
como aprendiste a usar este programa? felicidades con esta presentacion. me gusto muchisimo!

Have to agree with previous responses - really nice work. I have two small critics.
It feels as though there should be some light wrapping going on, especially around her right leg where the background is light. Also she is very sharp around the edges. I think she would feel more integrated if there was a subtle blur between her and the background? All in all a great piece of work :)

Fantastic artwork. I like the way your characters don't look like they've gone through several rounds of plastic surgery.

Off topic sort of. Ever heard of a "camel toe"? Don't feel bad if not - someone had to explain to me recently what it was. Me so naive, I thought it was referring to bad feet. :) So a friend sent me this link and even after watching it, I was thinking "Hey, her feet don't look that bad."

great great modeling and rendering!:bounce:
great work.
everything in the scene is realy awesome.
Love this pic. Been admiring for a while. Although I love it, I can crit.
- Legs have an inward turn for both legs, almost as if knock kneed or awkward. Great for this dramatic piece, but awkward nonetheless.
- Skin texture is awesome, but a but on the plasticky side. Different from an oiled sweaty look, ya know? As if not bumped like real skin and snmooth all the way down.
- Bats look 2D to her 3D
- DOF is a bit flat when moving towards the back.
Again, definitely a 5 star piece. Just a few things from my perspective.

Very good job man gr8 texturing, modeling everythings good but the fingers doesnt look that real as the rest of the model and hand, arm materials need some work the neer bat shouldnt be blurt as the far ones make them les blurt the ons near to the screan and increase as u go back ,and put some details on the bat should give a gr8 look but other than that everythings perfect --> very very good job.
please put the skin texture.

very nice work,
however, In this shot her left forearm seems a bit shiny although I love the skin texture otherwise. She seems to have adopted a seriously unnatural or at least unflattering pose but I hope you won't take my comments the wrong way.

the modeliing, texturing, lighting (http://www.xosearchox.com/text/search.php?qq=LIGHTING) is great to me ...
But the clothing just doesn't make any sense to me ... she wear more like a Wrestler, a Playmate, a Swimsuit model or etc ... but she just doesn't look like a Vampire to me ....
just my 2 cent .... good job
