I'm sure there's a good one out there, but I've been searching for a little while and have come up with nothing much. I did find a mental ray GI tutorial for a different app, but the settings seemed to be different and the results didn't come out right.

Thanks for any tips.

Thats so simple u don't need a tutorial. For your standard GI, place out a Skylight, go under the mental ray section in the render dialouge, localise the Final Gather settings and make sure they are on. Now just render. Lowering samples first might be good cuz it could take some time to render.

Thanks for the tip. I got it working today; I wasn't sure what needed to be enabled or not. As a matter of fact, I'm still not positive.. are there any people out there who know this feature in and out? Any suggestions on configuring it for the best result?

The effect is a bit too subtle, I want light to bounce around a bit more. Here's an example of what I'm looking for (before/after):
http://www.richardrosenman.com/global.htm

Scroll down a bit to the two images. The second one has an excellent "smoothly shaded" look to it - how the lighting appears darker in corners than on flat surfaces, for example. Does anyone have info on how to create illumination like that?

Thanks again.

http://www.evermotion.org/tutorials/rendering/mr_interior/index.htm

that's one example... though a bit undetailed... basically you have to create the mr_area spotlight, turn up it's energy to like like 50 or so in the mental ray indirect illumination category, then turn on Global illumination in the render rollouts... final gather will help also... you'll have to play with the amount of photons too (in the light rollout gi photons multiplier)...

http://www.3d-kaan.com/main.php?g2_view=core:ShowItem&g2_itemId=63 explains it ok... basic enough for you to get started

actually... they're both not too bad, so you should be able to figure it out from there... the max 6 new features guide explained the basics ok (of what does what), though I don't think the same info is in max 7 anywhere

Thanks for the links! The first one showed me more or less all I need to know - lots of experimenting to do though. :)

I did check most all of the Max docs on GI and, although it told me what most of the parameters do, it lacks how-to's/tutorials - I'd rather learn from a person saying "this does this, but you should set it to this for the best results" rather than from a book saying "this does this." :)

Thanks again, appreciate it.

Yeah... hopefully they'll include some real tutorials for mental ray on their next release. Who knows though... but anyway... cg-academy.net is considering creating a mental ray dvd set which will be killer, no doubt. I don't know if they're absolutely going to make one, but in a dif thread that was the most talked about thing, so keep an eye out! Otherwise, http://www.evermotion.org/index.php?unfold=shop&category=17 is the only one i know of right now, and I haven't heard anything about it (they have some free examples on that page too you should look at) ..their forum also seems to focus more on gi and lighting and rendering over anything also..
