Ok, after what seems an extremely long time, here it is at last! Of course there are a ton of things I wish I could have done to this but overall I am proud of it and just happy that I got it done on time. I would just like to say thank you to CGTalk for putting on such a great event that brings together such a diverse crowd of talented and helpful artists from around the world. This has been a huge learning experience for me and has caused me to do alot of things for the first time. I also want to thank everyone who commented on my thread...no matter what was said, it all helped in the end. I don't think I could have gotten it done without the support of the community. Thanks! Now, good luck to everyone!
And, as promised, here is my story:

The year is 2076 and the world as we know it no longer exists. The Planet has been poisoned and Mankind is near the brink of extinction. World wide war has destroyed most of the environment and driven the few surviving humans deep underground....but we are not the only things to have survived...

Just before The End, great strides were made in the field of genetic mutation and cloning. The United States led the world in this controversial research with it's cross species genetic mutation and cloning program. Dr. Heinrich, the project leader, was a brilliant man years ahead of his time. He was a pioneer in his field and directly responsible for project: H.I.M. (Human Inter-species Mutation), a military funded program to develop a new breed of super soldier designed to excel in all areas of combat. Early attempts at merging human and various animal and insect DNA gave life to terrible, slobbering abominations, most of which were destroyed or died shortly after birth. It seemed that project: H.I.M. might never be realized. That is until, in his frustration, Dr. Heinrich defied all common sense and logic by secretly pushing ahead with his experiments using his own DNA as the template for this unholy life. And soon, project: H.I.M. was a success. But the thing which was created, H.I.M., was a creature so vile, so cunning, so evil, so full of hate that it had to be locked away in a secret government facility beneath the New Mexico desert for maximum containment and further development. Bioengineering teams fitted H.I.M. with a state of the art bio-fueled, arm mounted, flame canon and various other biomechanical upgrades. The successful merging of Heinrich's DNA with that of a spider and a crab were the building blocks for H.I.M. and the results were terrible to behold....the speed of the spider, the hard outer shell of the crab, cyberneticly enhanced body and the stunningly brilliant intellect of Henrich himself amounted to the perfect killing machine. Hate and revenge were the only emotions which seemed to be present in H.I.M. He endured their tests, alone in the darkness, waiting, plotting until one day...

The End...Skies darken, the Earth trembles....Man's killing machines have been set loose on Mother Earth. Humanity is nearly lost.... only a few now remain seeking shelter in the bowels of the Earth. Yet, there are other things lurking in the darkness of the eternal night.... In the chaos of the nuclear attacks He is freed....The facility now belongs to H.I.M. Years have passed and all of the other inhabitants of the facility are either fled, or dead. Most died horrible deaths at the hand of H.I.M. in retribution. Yet the loneliness is a terrible foe.....Driven by the human need for companionship and fueled by the terrible gift of a superior intellect full of the knowledge of life, the process of creation begins again....Using the advanced technology contained within the facility, He begins the task of creating H.I.M. by first staging raids on the scattered human groups for fresh, untainted DNA and then combining his own with these stolen treasures. Many failures he endures, vaguely reminiscent of Heinrich's own early defeats. But as we watch, He reaches into the incubation chamber and grabs a mass of swirling blue fabric....Success! He thrusts his first born high into the air. There is a new Master. The reign of man is drawing to a close...Soon the world belongs to H.I.M.!

This is a very rough sketch just trying to get the general layout of the composition. The final image will be looking over the masters shoulder to give an inside glimpse of this creatures cave. While he appears to be nurturing the infant in the foreground, the rest of his servant children are cleaning the cave and also are preparing the nights feast (and the most unlucky ones are the main course).

These are concept sketches of the master character. He is a spider human hybrid, slash zombie cyborg. He raises human children as his servants and livestock. He has one humanoid arm for his left and an integrated flamethrower for his right.

Thanks everyone for the support! I hope that I can get everything done in time. Tonight I think I am going to create a rough 3D layout for the entire scene so everybody (including myself) can get a better idea of the direction the finished composition may take. Untill then...

Oh yeah, I will also try to get the wires for the masters body on tonight too.

Ok, here is the nearly finished head. the cables need more detail but I am not sure if I will do that in the model or in the texture. I think I want him to be wearing a tattered hood/cloak so I am not sure at this point what will be covered and what will be showing. I think that I want to model the cloth with polys and then get some dynamics with reactor for the final pose. Not quite sure yet though...Any suggestions or crits so far? Must sleep now...

Hi, I love your design! :bounce:

I guess only think I would love to see is his upper body (torso) much bigger.

Awesome texturing on that leg. Good luck!

Thanks for the input Z...this is my first challenge so every little bit helps! As far as the torso size, it is probably smaller in proportion than it could be but I was kind of going for the feel of the monster element overpowering the human(?) aspect of the character. In the final composition the torso will fill most of the foreground as he cradles a human infant and the spider aspect will be looming behind. Now that I thimk of it that may be a strong enough scene on its own...I originally wanted that same setup but with the creatures cave in the background with his other human servants cleaning and cooking (another infant) but i will have to start arranging my final scene I guess before I will decide.

Cheers!

Hey all! Not avery ineresting update as this (or something close to it) is only my background element. Just trying to get all of my scene elements modeled so I can start figuring out how it will all go together. The creatures cave will be in the middle ground and he and child in the foreground. Any crits or comments on the scenery is appreciated. Oh yeah, this is no where near the final lighting but I was thinking of Greens (for the atmosphere) and oranges and reds as the color palette. Thanx!

Hmmmm...Seems as though you found me out. Damn! That said, I checked out your other stuff man and I like. Wink wink is pretty friggin funny and the progression on the character is awesome. Can't wait to see the redux. I feel ya on the 'got somethin inside and need to get it out' with this project. Sadly I seemed to have slowed down a bit. Funny how making a huge freakish beast flows so easy yet when it comes time to make the sweet little baby its like I hit the wall. I guess reality is stranger than fiction. Oh well, I WILL finish even if it is at the last minute. Thanks for the laughs Robert, Your cool. And in the famous words of...well, I can't remember...I think it was just somdumguy...Mmmmmm Chiiillllyyy. L8tr.

To All:Oh yeah I will post again! Hopefully tonight but if I dont make any satisfactory progress on my baby I will have to move to another element. It sucks I only have a few hours to work every evening so, I will do what I can.

Hah, your last post made me laugh out loud man, Cheers

BTW Cindy (my 'innocent' girl char) scares the bejeezus outta me, everything else has been just fun stuff... Humanity, and capturing a human emotion, the struggle of one mind, blahblahblah is going to be the real challenge for all of us I think... Stick with it man, you'll get there

'reality is stranger than fiction'

too true...

Keep it coming on strong my friend:thumbsup:

Ok, I actually made some progress with my baby modeling:bounce: but, it is not quite show worthy yet...So, it will have to wait till tomorrow evening. At least the face should be ready. This one will be wrapped in a cloth as the master cradles it so the body should not be too difficult to create. And any others will be further in the background so they should be pretty easy (I hope). I hate Babies!

Thanks for the support all! Soon...Very soon.......

Ok, so here's the little guy finally. He still has some problem areas but most of his head will be covered by the blanket/rags he will be wraped in so most of those issues will be obscured. I still need to work a bit on the outside corners of the eye/cheek area and down near the chin. The shader is just a test but its close... crits and comments alway welcome. And if anyone can tell me why Mental Ray is trying to reveal my wire frame when I started using the SSS Fast Skin Shader that would be awesome (You can really see it in the side shot). Thanx!

Hey rynomyte, great update! Your babe is off to a sweet start. I think his outer nostrils may be a bit wide and mybe his toplip could be a bit plumper...Really minor details tho, I think you pretty much nailed it man.

With the wierdness in your rendering...I'm hoping maya is weapon of choice...You may have a duplicate model or the residual shape node from a previous incarnation still connected to your current model...Open Hypergraph (windows>hypergraph) with babe head selected, press 'f' to locate the model, in the menu bar somewhere...sorry sleepy... show up and downstream connections. Have a look at what you've got connected and (file saved of course) start deleting anything that doesn't look like it belongs....

Good luck Ryan:thumbsup:

Maxter, Thanx for the kind words.:D Hpopefully more updates soon...

DaddyMack, yeah you pretty much hit on the other problem areas. I will be fixing those as I work on the body. I should have the body done tonight I hope. I have never modeled cloth before (he is wrapped in a blanket) but it seems to be going ok. I may also have him reaching out with one exposed arm and I'm not sure if that will be done tonight too but we will see.
As far as my rendering issue, sorry I am using Max, I seemed to have fixed it by just merging the elements I really needed (head, lights, material etc.) into a fresh scene. It has worked so far anyway. So, I was going to ask you what package you are using but I guess by your answer it is Maya. I have only recently begun in the world of 3D and Max is just what I have learned on. I would like to check out some other packages just to compare but I have not even seen any others in person yet. Anyway, thanks for the support and I will post again soon. Cheers mate!:)

Ok, so here is a start to my wraped up baby. I think this is about as far as I should go on modeling the blanket because the master will be holding him in his arms and I need to know where the cloth interacts with his arm and how it should really drape. So, next step is to finish rigging and pose the master..Tomorrow, tomorrow theres always tomor.........sorry. Anyway, this is really my first attempt a modeling cloth and is only a start so please be kind. If my luck holds out I may have a good deal of the composition laid out sometime this weekend and ready for approval. Thanks to all for the support!

Hey rynomyte, looking really good for a max user...Ducks flying punches from the max community... All the Apps do just about the same thing mate, and once you get good at one it seems pretty easy to port to other apps. Keep it up man!! Maybe the baby would like some gums or a coupla teeth?

Can't wait to see your composition laid out;)

Good luck mate!

DaddyMAck: ...And then they were bitter enemies:twisted: ...J/K. :) No, as always thanks for the kind words mate. I am taking all of your comments to heart but, I am just trying to rough everything out before I go back and hit the little details (like gums or teeth). Actually tho, the reference pic I used to create the baby did not have either. It did however have its tounge partially sticking out so I think I will go that route (probably the eaisiest). As for my composition, I too hope I can get that started soon because I think it will really help illustrate my story better than any half assed explainations I have offered so far.

Virtuoso:  Ah, I am honored you have offered such kind words for my piece....Yours is definately one of my favorites and your imput is very Welcome. It is kind of strange that so many children and babies have entered the scene for this challenge...I am hoping that mine are the only ones on the menu tho....I am not sure if that is good or bad however....

Tremoside: Again, your piece is also one of my favorites  and I thank you for taking the time to check out my stuff. Also, I never thanked you for your mini UVW unwrap lesson.:applause: It made alot of sense and I will be sure to try it out soon.

I am relatively new to this field and every comment and criticism advances my knowledge and skill to some degree. CGnetworks is a wonderful place. This forum and this challenge are an invaluable lerning aid. Thanks to all!

Very nice geometry of cloth on the baby. Texture is a bit stretchy in some places. But i am sure you'll fis that.

Cool. Good luck.

Comrade Sukhov: Ah, it seems as though most of my favorite artists have decided to visit my humble pages today.....Thank you for your comments, I really do admire your work and hopefully I will have something much bigger to show soon. And yes you caught me with my stretchy texture...It was just better than 'grey.' Hopefully it will be much better for the final. Thanks again. Cheers mate!

alexfalchi: Thank you my friend...your comments are always appreciated.

Neeno: Glad you like what you see...My progress has slowed down a bit but more to come soon. (I hope!)

I have spent a good deal of the weekend rigging and adjusting the skin weights on my master character (a pain):argh: . Again it was really the first time I have spent any real time working with skin weights. Come to think of it, this challenge is causing me to do alot of things for the first time....I have also been trying to come up with a good pose and camera angle. The pose I am pretty sure of but as far as the angle for my final composition...well, I am having trouble. No matter what I've got I will post the result for crits tomorrow...I want one more evening to try and work something out. Hang in there....:banghead:

Yes.....I will be the promoter......Now thats a show for the ages.......fight off....you can create a nice little scene,a boxing ring for babies...and then take the final fight-off to the finished gallery.....front page for sure......brute can be the referee....;) :arteest:

Ok, this should be the last time you see this little guy until he is in the final pose...I still need to finalize the flow of the blanket and possibly reposition the arm and surrounding material accordingly but that will have to wait 'till I figure out the final position. The scene comp is giving me fits...I want to be close up on the master and baby but I also don't want to leave too much of the masters body off screen....I will try to have something soon. Then maybe you guys can help me fine tune the rest.....

This comp I came up with while working on the first one...It kind of changes my concept too....I was thinking maybe to turn the baby/servant into a reature like the master but only hint at it by changing the shape of the blanket and maybe sticking a few legs out there too......So the question I pose to the community is this......FIRST: do you prefer #1 or #2 for the gen angle and SECOND: should I alter the concept and morph the baby? I kind of like the idea personally.... Remember no perspective, no lighting, no textures, no environments or just about anything is final in these mock ups. Everything I do from here kind of depends on the shot. If you have read this far then I thank you for your time and just let me know what you think...Thanks!

rynomyte
04-22-2005, 01:56 PM
DaddyMack: Thanks mate! Yeah, I was'nt sure exactly what I wanted to do with the skull material (still not quite sure) except that I wanted it to have a very gaunt look to it....like the flesh stretched very tightly over the bone. I still might change this to look a little lighter like human skin or at least some median between the two....I dunno, still workin that one out. As far as the hoses....well, I really wanted them to look sinewy, and rotted or tattered but my first attempts failed miserably so, I went for the standard metal hose(?) look for now. But, everything is still in the wip stage, right? so who knows, I might figure out how to make it work. Thanks for the support Robert.:bounce:

alexfalchi: As always thank you for the kind words mate! Actually the skin is just a standard 3ds max material (in this render) but I did play around with the sss skin shader using this same map and cellular combo. I liked it but my limited knowledge of this shader was making it difficult to get the skin to look the way I wanted....maybe after I play with it some I will get it to work.
Cheers Alex!

Ok, so now that I've had a few days to think about my composition some more I think I have decided to change it once again. The new scene will be set in a run down science facility where the master will be conducting experiments against humanity...that is, trying to recreate another being like himself. The main pose will be similar to my comp #2 that I posted a few days ago but now will be set in a decrepit laboratory. Behind the master holding up his new servant (a sucessfuly spliced human and creature) will be failed experiments housed in circular, liquid filled, glass specimin containers hooked up to some kind of pump mechanism near the ceiling. I think I really like this idea and I think I can pull it off better than the first few things I thought of! If anyone feels this idea is worthwile please just drop a word or two and let me know....I will maybe have a rough mock up done tonight to give a general idea of what the hell I'm talking about. Cheers!

So, I finally have figured out my scene....for the most part. The master will be holding his newly created servant and the cylinders in the background will be holding previous failed experiments. The tubes will be coming out of a pump mounted near the ceiling and most likely there will be more smaller tubes instead of a few big ones...everything in this version beside the master is just a placeholder to get an idea of what will go where. I guess completing the textures for the master and reworking the blanket of the baby to be shaped more like the masters body and adding the odd leg or two sticking out are my next tasks. And then modeling the specimen tanks and the pump....c & c are welcome on the composition, it gave me fits but I think it is close to what I want. Cheers!

enochian, yeah so far arranging the composition has been the toughest part. Well, I think I got a pretty good start on the specimen tank which will be in the background...or 3 of them to be precise. I will add more hoses to the top and model ridges onto all hoses. The textures are not final just trying to get an idea...and that poor little guy in there will be replaced with a suitably hideous crime against humanity...this things genetic mutation failures. Anyway, i am can't even see straight and to bed I go...Let me know what you think. Thanks!

Ok, so I improved a few things and changed some. I think this is almost there....I might shorten the panels that connect the hoses to the glass and I will probably redo all of the tank hoses (just not right yet) and the lighting is just experimental. The whole image is too bright as well but the end result setup will come soon when I place these in the scene. They will be in the background and blurred some so I could leave them as is but I want them to be right...is that too much to ask? Let me ykow what you all think....thanks!

Ok, no more making freaks for this guy....well, dead ones anyway. This is the last of my 3 failed experiment babies. The last thing I have left to model (main thing anyway) is the first successful, genetic fusion baby. I am just going to take the original baby I made and redo his 'birthing' cloth to suggest the shape of the creature beneath and have a leg or two sticking out. C and C welcome for all my little tykes and sorry to anyone grossed out by these images (nobody seems to be responding anymore) but at least the master is not eating them anymore....thanks!

Phew.....all of my main modeling is done! Some small tweaks here and there as I assemble things but otherwise, done. This is the first successful genetic cloning/fusion by the master and he is raising it in triumph. I included the hand so I could model around it...the cloth still needs some tweaks but it is 4 in the morning and I am suprised I can type. I basicly have four days to complete all textures and assemble and light my scene before I go out of town next week...then I will have 2.5 days to render and adjust after I get back...(oh God I hope I can pull it off)....wish me luck! Any comments or crits on anything in my thread up to this point are very much appreciated. Thanks.

Ok, so I have been working furiously these past few days to get as much done as I can before I go out of town tomorrow...Here is a very bare bones version of my scene. The textures on the creature are the bad ones..I was experimenting and forgot to change them out for this render so disregard those...the pump that connects to the tanks is missing and just about everything is still a work in progress but I figured I would show this in case someone sees something that could be better and to give an idea of the direction I am heading. I will try and get a little further tomorrow and post a more completed render but we will see. Please, c&c are welcome...alot of this has been a first for me so I need all of the help I can get! See ya all when I get back and hopefully I can finish strong on this one...or at all! Cheers!

I'm glad you posted new update before you leave your town. what can I say... it's very dark in there - I think a little too dark. the master is amazing character and I'd like to see him more! what about lighting from below - it could add depth and lit master's eyes in thrilling manner. tanks look nice. the light coming out of them is very important for the whole scene. without them it'd be dark as hell. maybe add some bubbles or dust floating in those tanks.

Hey Everyone! I am back from my trip and ready (I hope) to get this thing done....Here is a new render with most of the background added and with a quick run through photoshop for color and brightness and contrast. There is some more lghting to do and some material tweaks and then I have to be done. I started a test render last night with everything turned on...atmospherics, 4000x2000 resolution and MR sampling turned to MIN 1 MAX 16....and I had to stop it today 12 hour later because it was only 25 percent done! I am not sure if I sould render in layers or just start the final render tonight to be ready by Wed (maybe)....Any rendering ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks and good luck to all!

I guess this is pretty much my final image but with out any atmospherics turned on for this render. Next I will render out at the final resolution and with atmospherics turned on and the samples turned up...then I gues a pass through photoshop and maybe some Max post effects and I'll be done...I hope! Here I go....

To everyone who has commented on my humble little thread so far I say a big THANK YOU! and to my regulars...DaddyMack, alexfalchi, and grooshka, Thank you for your constant support, comments and criticisms without which I might not have finished this piece on time....Right now the last of my final is rendering out and barring any unforseen problems, it should be done sometime tomorrow. Then I should have just enough time to run it through photoshop for some adjustents before I turn it in. I will post a proper story along with my final image and until then...Good luck to all and see you at the end!:bounce:

I'm glad you finished your work in time, friend. I think it's a good work. I like the infant much. it's in central place of the image and we can concentrate our eyes on it and his master. I also like the fact that your background is blured and don't disturb me from watching foreground characters. I think this image could use more colours though but I can't say where I'd put them.
in sum: good work!
