Latest Update: Coloring WIP: working on the pose

thanks guys for the attention and tips!

I'm desperately trying to get rid of the stiffness, but like I said, characters aren't my strongest area so..

Anyway, I tweaked a bit, trying to get that monster to work a bit better. I know that legs are horrible, can't help it at the moment - it's an idea of get the pose to work, probably have to spend a lot of time with the bad guy - not to mention the slave.. awww..

I'll look into the composition -thing too, thanks for notifying.

Okay, here's my color sketch, should give some idea of where I'm going to go with this, the grey thing coming from hands of that yellow (?) dude will be a chain chained to hand of the big evil guy standing in shadows. Evil character has just pulled the slave to ground with the chain.. which probably doesn't show very clearly at this point :D

I'm gonna make the evil guy show more, of course, and I'll be tweaking the color of that ah, so yellow fellow down there, too. It's just that characters are by far hardest things to me, and I just concentrated to the environment with this one - at least you should see a bit of it ;)

Anyway, any comments and ideas are welcome!

I really like it. Colors are very cool, lookin for evil guy to see the complete composition. this evil pillar looks a bit against-perspective and doesnt fit to me, but this will probably change when U'll show the bad guy :)
keep it up dude!

thanks guys, those pillars are just something random I threw in - doodling around with things. I hope too that it will change better :D

I spent loooong time with that evil dude, and still he's not working. Besides, he has no legs at the moment..

I tried something General Grievouish with the face, and of course it looks nothing like him. I had to tilt the head due the pose of the body, so I kinda changed the face alltogether.

Could someone paint this for me :D

thanks guys, I actually had the legs painted but I censored them.. I now gotta try again with them. Problem with hand is that he's holding it in front of it and rest of the body is kinda foreshortened, but I think it looks stupid at the moment.

About lighting, as I said: it's screwed. The fire might be edited away from middle alltogether to improve the composition - I planned the character that way too, I'm trying ten ideas at the same time which is most likely unwise.

Pity that school started again, can't paint whole days.

Still no legs, wasn\'t able to call for the effort to retry them, and the earlier hadn\'t magically mutated into a masterpiece either.. so still no legs.

Changed a bit lighting, trying to fix it.. Also, trying something to fix the hand of the evil guy.

Comments appreciated!

Maybe you should clip of a bit of the lower part, so it seems more focused on the characters... 'cause now it feels like i'm being pushed away or distanced by it! though the painting itself looks really good sofar! *wanna see the final image*

i'm still liking the colours, but the character i feel is really taking away from the coolness of the scene ,cos of the stiffness that u mentioned,it looks more like he *the big guy* is posing for the camera, instead actually being part of the image.

i dunno if ur prepared for it,but i wud suggest a new more dynamic pose? if its too much work, blah! just try and perfect this one.

excellent work overall.

p.s. i asked u a question in my thread.please answer :)

thanks Noob for the heads up. I'll see if I can use the weapon to bind him together with the slave. He will be working much better with the environment after I actually paint him in the scene, meaning that I'll fix his lighting to match the environment, paint all the dust, flying debris etc. he creates with his movement. I'll try to put a lot of weight to the weapon, and after working more with legs, the pose should get more dynamic and real (I hope).I'll check out your thread, will be difficult to find your question from it though

This is good, also my intial idea was a bit hellish but decided to let it go because it was too demanding with this time limit. Good luck, I'll subscribe!

possible change of concept.. awhg.

My concept isn't purely working I guess, I have learned that my characters are not going to work, so I better start them over again or change concept and start everything over.

I think I'll start everything over.

Absolutly beautiful expressive painting style. I love the simple, elegant line you have from master to servant. Great colours, well established mood.
I'll keep watching your progress!

Oh. Just read your last comment. Please don't give up on this one. I think you could make the composition stronger by moving the devil farther to the top left of the screen then whipping some of those flames in and around from bottom right up through to left (not really an arch but a flow that leads the eye in that direction). Maybe lower the arm carrying the staff and move his eyes to a more obvious downward direction. Then extend the tips of the black rock in background just out of the composition. If the stiffness of your characters are overwhelming you perhaps instead of redoing everything a few new character sketches placed as a new layer would be nice to see.

I work with over a dozen illustrators at my job and your piece is being very much admired over here! Keep posting.

maybe let the master look at the servant more clearly to get the relationship a bit more intimate?
