Hey,

I did a tornado simulation in Maya of which I now created a Matte painting, I would like to get some feedback on composition mostly, this is one of my first Mattes and I'm not really sure of my composition. Thanks in advance

Looks sweet! Although it's a little dark (to me atleast, maybe my screen or my eyes:) and I find it hard to figure out were you want the viewers attention. I would go for the tornado :)

Yeah, thats most of the time my problem, it's looking bright enough on my screen, might be me though. Thanks for the comment

Here's a brighter version

I was thinking maybe you could do some thunder and lightning in the sky on the left hand side of the picture (in the dark clouds). It doesn't need to strike to the ground but just up in the clouds. If you do, you maybe play around with the light in the scene some more (etc the lightning bolts in the clouds reflects a little on the buildings).

If you try this, go for the darker version of the picture.

Good luck!

I might try that, I'm just wondering if that wouldn't divert the attention from the tornado even more...

hey derb. What composition formulas are ya gonna go for? my only suggestion is my eye travels towards the tornado, and to the clouds but stops at the center, it feels a little dead on the left side of the frame, so maybe something might be changed in that spot, Im not sure though, great work so far though

u r going to add the animated tornado, right? if that's the case for this BG painting, i'd say you don't have to worry that much about the comp. i like the mood and colors you used here.

I agree, it needs something in the sky directly above the middle tower- like a flock of lighter colored birds in a panic?

I just love your buildings...v. atmospheric!

OK, I don't have much to say about the composition. It looks fine to me. I wonder if the buildings on the left are where the tornado is going or where it has just passed. I happen to be a big tornado freak. If they are supposed to be post tornado, I would make them look much more raged. They look more like forgotten ruins then fresh destruction. When you look at tornado-destroyed homes and buildings, they are very chaotic. The tornado looks pretty good, but a little too defined along the edges. That might just be what you are going for. Tornados look a bit more smoky and wispy in the middle and bottom part. The last thing I would say is that the clouds coming down into the tornado look like they are coming down rather than swirling up. I know these crits might be nitpicking and annoying, but this piece looks so nice that I thought I’d offer them.
