Latest Update: Final Image: Master Mourning Over His Wasted Servant
Ok. Here it is!
The story about these characters in this scene is plain and simple. The servant went out into the forest to prove her faithfulness and obidience to her master by obeying his order to kill the forest demon. She did kill the demon, but unfortunately, she was severly wounded and wasn't able to bring back the demon head to his master. Few days passed by and the master decided to search for his servant in the forest. He found her dead along with her kill. He mourns for her demise... She was wasted!

I'm still working on the site-linking for the image(s).
03-27-2005, 06:37 AM
A rough idea for the layout.
03-27-2005, 06:45 AM
not pretty clear abt the concept, but i'm sure it will turn out pretty cool
03-27-2005, 06:45 AM
I woke up this morning and improved what I did last night. I haven't dressed up the characters and they are still wearing temp clothes. The magical bird is also temporary and maybe replaced with another servant creature.
great skill..keep up the good work..
try to do something about her face..make it more feminine..again..great work
03-27-2005, 07:54 PM
hi there again.....nice to see u moving along.....i was wondering what ur storyline is.....did he rescue the girl with his faithful animal servants?????......let us know where u are gonna take the sketches.....keep it going :)
03-30-2005, 12:09 PM
Here's an update. Did some clean ups and is halfway to finish the line art milestone.
Continue this later; got to go back to work.
03-30-2005, 12:31 PM
Looking great so far! Are you using a reference? If this is off the top of your head you certainly know your proportions! (well a million times better than I do  ).
03-30-2005, 12:49 PM
Hi there, Groady!
Thanks for replying. Acutally, I'm working without reference whatsoever at this stage. I have to admit that at some point I really hace to use some 'coz there are problem areas that I find unproportional. The line art will be revised after I completed this milestone. That is when I finaly got some reference materials.
Rhenia: Yes, you got it! The master was able to rescue the fallen girl with the help of his animal servant.
Oro: Did some improvement with the girl. Hope it suits your taste.:D
03-30-2005, 07:19 PM
Great sketches, you draw the characters very well, and the little details are well handled. I'm curious to know how the whole master/servant thing applies here though?
03-30-2005, 07:25 PM
Very nice drawings and compsition, look forward to some color!
03-30-2005, 07:27 PM
The line art is beautiful! My only little crit is that in one of the previous sketches the guy seemed to be looking at the bird now he seems to be looking somewhere else past it?
04-02-2005, 02:27 PM
Did some improvements on the the last submitted line art. I'm quite happy with the proportions but I still have to make some minor adjustments later.
The servant eagle is missing 'coz I have to make a separate drawing for that. Maybe i a while, I'll post another line art with the servant included in the final line art.
04-02-2005, 02:56 PM
Hi, it's weekend and I'm free to work on this entry and respond to some feedbacks I received here.
sidchagan: Thanks man! The simple story behind this concept is that the male was able to rescue his female friend in the forest through the help of his servant bird and he is giving orders to the bird to get a magical potion somewhere. This potion will help him save his unconscious/dying friend. The female battled a demonic monster and almost cost her life.
Jose Pardo: Thanks!
Brianl: I haven't finish the bird/eagle sketches yet. The creature will be landing on his finger. I'll work on it tonight and have it posted later.
04-02-2005, 03:26 PM
good, another thread to follow, they're beginning to become to many!:scream:
about your artworks only one critique: somewhat his left arm looks a little strange to me (but maybe I'm just influenced by european falconeers who keep theyr falcon on the arm in a different way:rolleyes: )
04-02-2005, 06:35 PM
Added the eagle. I've been trying different posture for the bird and tried to avoid the usual position by modifying her right (facing) wing. I want to stick to the circular layout and putting the wings in the "usual" position throws her off.
Wel, this is close to finishing the line art milestone and what it lacks is the bg and fg elements.
04-02-2005, 06:49 PM
Aradiael: Well, I think the arm is ok. What I'm struggling at before was his left hand. I was wondering with options where the bird will be coming from and if he'll get the bottle first or let the bird land first on his finger.
It's for composition reasons that he's arm is positioned that way. :)
04-03-2005, 12:52 AM
I have no critic, just one question why don't you make a little phoenix out of this bird...? Kind of sparkling little red fiery bird
Other than that everything is great!
My master And Servant 2D (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=225858)
04-03-2005, 04:21 AM
The Wizard: I thought about that initially. As a matter of fact I was determined to make the bird mysterious and magical in the beginning (like in the preliminary sketches) with very long tail feathers. However, I find it too "dominating" for the master so I have to tone it down and came up with an eagle (which is by the way is not a common eagle). Don't worry... she is not an ordinary bird and when the coloring starts, you'll appreciate her.
By the way, someone is doing a phoenix bird here-- so I'll avoid duplicating that. :)
04-04-2005, 05:40 PM
I see your point:)
and let me say that now with the bird it looks definately better!
I'll wait for further progress ;)
04-04-2005, 05:43 PM
Very nice composition! I like how there is a master servant relationship happening between three character! The line quality is very nice. I can't wait to see some colour applied to this concept. I'll check back soon to see how your progress goes.
04-09-2005, 03:00 AM
It's weekend again and time to do this stuff. I wonder if it's I can finish this piece and working only on weekends.
Anyway, I'm quite happy with the revised version compared to my last posted images. The eagle might be replaced with another creature or totally removed.
I will now proceed in making rough color ing startinng now.
04-09-2005, 11:52 AM
My initial coloring of the servant.
04-09-2005, 12:47 PM
NICE! Great start on the colour!
Y'know... I love your sketches, but I think I like the orginal pose of the dead servant girl better (I really like the new pose for the master). Anyhoo... you've begun paints, so I guess as long as you're happy with her pose, then rock on! Looks like it's gonna be a wonderful piece.
04-09-2005, 01:18 PM
Louis, WOW man ! that's some nice looking skin tones. Great concept too. Can't wait to see this finished.

Here's what I've done so far for the day. I'm tired and time to get some sleep.
04-09-2005, 07:25 PM
wow thats looking brilliant.
almost 3d like.
04-09-2005, 07:47 PM
artjunkie: Hi! thanks for posting! With regards to the two layouts (previous and now), I decided to revise the original position and layout of the concept after a week of personal criticism. Although the first one looks fine to me, I kept asking myself what else I want to see in this drawing? Of course, I feel like I can still make the artwork better (especially the posture of the servant girl). Now I'm happy with the poses and I immediately jumped in coloring it. Before I have doubts and I just kept staring on the old one. Now, it was just a snap putting colors on it.
Tariq12, NOOB!: Thanks guys! Stand by for more updates tomorrow!
04-10-2005, 09:09 AM
Ok, For a change, I've worked on the master. Please feel free to C&C.
04-10-2005, 04:14 PM
Aw, this is so, so...sad. *sniffles madly* Anyway, great idea, great composition, great expression, GREAT mastery of form--but I'm not quite convinced that she's dead. Sleeping or otherwise unconscious, sure, but her skin tone feels a little on the warm-n-healthy side, even for the newly-dead.
Maybe make her slightly paler and add a hint of blue, especially to her lips (I really hate to suggest that, because they're bloody gorgeous as they are!); that should sell the "dead" idea.
04-10-2005, 07:02 PM
Hi, Imriela! Thanks for your comments. Making her look dead will be done later after she's done with the initial coloring. It's in the plan so standby for that.
Anyway, here's what I've done so far for the whole day. I have to stop working on this for a while...
I welcome all your C&C's
dammm! you have an eye for detail!..it's beautifull
04-11-2005, 02:47 AM

Hey Joni! Parang kagagaling mo lang dito nung isang buwan ah! It's really good to see you here and still an active cgtalk member!
It's good that you have spare time to draw again like you used to. The good thing about here in this discussion group is that I'll somehow forces you to "join" and do your art. Me, I have to squeeze my time and accomodate what I love to do.
Doing great so far with your entry! Hanep ka! Reminds me of the Taekwandogs characters you did years ago. Me, I had a very hard time drawing again. I thought I lost the ability draw. Back then, photoshop was just in it's infancy and this is the first time that I'll do a painting in photoshop. Makes me nervous 'coz I'm not into this really.
For all you people seeing this, I'm a first-time painter in photoshop. Last night I memorized keyboard commands and try messing with the new brush tools (which I use to ignore). I know about photoshop are scanning and retouching. Now PS CS is somewhat different.
Keep it going Joni! Dalawa lang ata tayong pinoy dito, e.
By the way, congratulations on Ge's pregnancy! Lalaki ba o babae?
The new *smoke is doing great! Really fast. And It's going to be tested in Mr G's new movie.
I'll be watching your entry as it progress.
04-11-2005, 10:09 AM
MDN67, madone01, oro: Guys, thank you for appreciation. This is my very first time to do a painting in photoshop. If you're familiar with the traditional airbrushing style, my work looks like that; 'coz I'm an "airbrush artist" and fior me, it looks like an airbrushed artwork. 3Dish? well, I do 3d too, but I almost forced myself in jumping into the other category (3D) after seeing so many (very) good digital painters here-- they really intimidates me. Now, I said to myself that I'll be joining this for the enjoyment and appreciation of doing what I loved to do traditionally; in a digital way though.
04-11-2005, 10:36 AM
wireFrame, pinoy din ako noh!...
nice work dude good luck!
04-11-2005, 08:11 PM
Just another update. I've worked on the legs of the servant. It'll be a slow pace these days for I have to attend to my work at the office. :)
digitalhadz: Thank you! Nice to see another fellow Filipino here at cgtalk. That makes us three now. Haha!
04-12-2005, 06:04 PM
I was not happy with the master's head so I revised it. Doing the coloring later.
04-12-2005, 06:46 PM
whoa extremly great!
Thats a nice process you have. Anatomy is top notch. I'd like to see some more charcter in the faces, though.
04-13-2005, 05:45 PM
great job dude... is it malakas & maganda concept? i love seeing kababayans in this contest & you did a good job considering you're new w/ photoshop. Im a newbe here too, but been doodling w/ photshop for a while, currently been using corel painter, u know free stuff when u get a wacom. Anyway, keep it up dude!
04-16-2005, 02:37 AM
It's weekend once again and time to do this wip. This is just an initial coloring of the new master's head.
C&C are welcome.
04-17-2005, 03:23 PM
I don't know if I could finish this working on it only on weekends...
Anyway, just another update.
04-17-2005, 04:00 PM
oatz: Thanks for posting. I'll try to add things that would add character to their faces. Expression is my utmost priority and I still have to improve them. Thinsg like jewelries and head dress would help enhance their characters.
arkinet: Thanks, kabayan! Good to see you here as well. No, this is not "malakas at maganda". I'm sticking to the master and servant theme and I would like to create an emotional scene between these two. Have seen your entry and looks very promising. Keep it up!

04-17-2005, 08:28 PM
I am soooo speechless...2d is not my area of expertise but damn, I can tell this is some fine work u got there. I think you should increase your bump map and lower your final gathering and ....hahahahaha that's all the kind of critic u would hear from me. But on a more serious note, I love it so much!!! I'll keep an eye on this :bounce: BOUING BOUING!

I'll try as much as possible to finish this. Lot of things happening to me lately and severely affected my drive.
But I'm back and I'll proceed in doing this!:deal:
05-04-2005, 06:43 AM
A late update of this piece! So hard to do with so many things happening...
Just added a shoe and sword for now. Later, I'll try to make some considerable updates after neglecting this for weeks.
