Here is basic scene composition sketch. Maybe the servant's hands should be pouring poison into a goblet. Should it actually say "poison" on the vial or is it obvious? C&C always welcome...

Rough sketch for Master's Throne

Hi feelinFroggy,
It's good to see lots of scetches before start.
I like your master's trone - very "evil tech like" :)
But your king (on a detailed scetch) seens to be too kind. Actually I first thought about positive character. I expected him to be antipatic instead; that every spectator could agree with servant to kill that king...
About poison - I think it is enough to put on some poison logo, but something interesting and original, cause it is close to camera and acts an important role - don't write just "poison"!

Keep on!

Thanks for the post Deryk. I agree , he looks like a total wuss in that sketch. He needs to look evil! I blame Sesame Street which was on when I was sketching :banghead:

The 3D version will be much more evil. I am thinking the servant might have some battle wounds too. Maybe a black eye or some sign of abuse.

Matroskin
03-28-2005, 05:01 AM
Sure, you have to blaim Sesame Str. !
Ok, no doubt you'll make it in 3d!
Battle wounds? Hm, hard to visualise (after night eyes are closing). Actually I can agree with it, but maybe his role would be more clear only with poison - it is already understood and wands can bring up some confusion (if king does not die - finish him!!)...
Well, you can also be right.

Here is the servant's head so far. I have new respect for people like SNOWS who can do this with their eyes closed. I shouldn't have been so caught up with the flow lines but I hate to put so much time into something and not be able to properly animate it at some point in the future. Tomorrow I'll do the ears and I think it will look alot more like the sketch...

cool! finally get to see your model.
my eyes closed... yeah right. You are giving me way too much credit.

Your edgeloops look great! you are doing a terrific job.watch for the head shape on the back tho, seems a bit narrow compared to the face. It is a good thing that you spend time working the edgeloops out; it makes for a good model that is easy to edit and UV map.

Keep at it man!

BTW, sorry to hear about your pc at home man. That sucks!

feelinFroggy
04-05-2005, 03:26 AM
Thanks SNOWS.

I detailed the head today and made ears. I will post another image tomorrow hopefully with torso, arms and hands of servant. I agree, back of head is really small. I wanted him to look dumb so I guess I unconsciously made the cranium small for small brain. Thanks for the advice. At the rate Im going , I'll be done with this next Christmas. How's CALI?

He has ears finally. I flattened a sphere and pushed and pulled vertices until I got it right. In my sketch the ears are bigger but Im not sure that I liked it once I saw it in 3D space. Im sure Ill go back and forth. No they aren't modelled after my own ears...

angel
04-07-2005, 04:36 AM
did you make the arms longer?

I felt that they were a bit short in the firs pic. In your new pic the finguers seem to have just one point of articulation because of the slight bump which is good but I think you need to add that to the other joint... am I making sense? In order to do that you might have to make the finguers slightly longer.

Do you have something already in mind for the costume?

Oh, BTW Cali is good:thumbsup:

feelinFroggy
04-07-2005, 01:25 PM
Thanks for the advice. I see what you mean. I guess with the arms outstretched like that they feel too long so I keep shortening them but once they are down he will look like a dwarf. I'll work on the fingers today.

Hey feelinFroggy, great model so far...I think the guy in your sketch has a slightly smaller cranium, and a slightly more exaggerated mouth. That was a large part of his 'simplicity' for me, great work tho so far mate...Keep it coming:thumbsup:

feelinFroggy
04-09-2005, 07:42 PM
Thanks Daddy Mack,

It's strange how once something can be seen from different angles, you start to change things. Like the ears just seemed absurd when I made them the same size as the sketch. My goal is to remain pretty close to my original sketches though. Tonight my goal is to pose the servant. Even though that was also my goal for last weekend.

Very Rough Pose of servant with some basic props. I will probably lose the collar jst toying with ideas. He has some weird weighting issues that I will have to manually resolve over the next day or so. Then I will get into some detailing on his body and add a shirt. 37 days left!!!!

Nice update Brandon! my only comment is on the hands... thay are a bit blocky and flat. The cup handle might be a bit too thin but that's just a nitpick. Keep at it!

feelinFroggy
04-11-2005, 06:27 AM
Yeah. Once I started posing with the default weight maps. Everything went to hell. The hand flattened out, etc. I am going to work on that this week. I really want his fingers to be thicker and callused like a manual laborer.

Thanks for the post. Off to read Cinefex!

Still detailing body of servant. Does he look to muscular? I guess one could make the argument..."Why poison your master when you can kick the crap out of him?" Anyway, I know the shirt looks terrible. I want it to flow more and have wrinkles, etc. Hopefully I'll be able to add some hair soon and design a poison vial. The one in his left hand is just a placeholder. Do you guys think he should be pouring the poison or just looking at the bottle? Ideas?

tiburonsita
04-13-2005, 02:49 PM
Starting to take on his personality. I don't mind him looking at the container like you have him now but it probably should be a different type of bottle. Kind of looks like a glass and I doubt he would go through the trouble of breaking out a beaker to do the mixing :)

feelinFroggy
04-13-2005, 09:38 PM
HeHe, Funny. Yeah I am trying to think of some kind of vial. I thought about the red skull cloud coming out but thought that was WAY to cliche. I guess if the image works then it shouldn't need a skull and crossbones, etc.

I started texturing the servant. Haven't unwrapped his face yet ,just getting basic lighting and colors down. I think I want the servant very backlit as if by an unseen fire or torches. I am going to have to do a lot of texturing to get this guy to look like he hasn't showered in 10 years.

Wow thanks for the response guys.

Flinder-Yes it's the new Mental Ray SSS shader for Max. It's finicky but with some tweaking has good results so far.
Daddy Mack- I agree-my intention was to go more cartoony or Shrek-like. The reason is that I am terrified of going for ultra-realistic as I've never done that before. It just has morphed into a little more realistic. I think the skin shader is whats doing it.
Neeno-Thanks for the post man. I wished I lived in Sydney! Great surf! Anyway, Great idea with the digital camera. I am going to start messing him up today. Hopefully we will get Shag/Hair here at work soon and I can add gratuitus amounts of hair.
snoWs- Yeah , I am still sketching ideas for the poison vial. I would like a glass base with metal "vines" wrapping around it forming an abstract skull but I haven't nailed it yet. Whats there is still a placeholder.

Sorry Brandon, I'd say not cliche enuff... I think the 'skull' should be more dominant/ prominent in the cloud...It's all going in a fine direction btw:thumbsup: Keep it coming mate!

I couldnt help myself. He needed a more sinister expression. After this I am REALLY moving to the Master. Thoughts?

Another servant update on the goblet, the lighting, etc. The goblet needed more "presence" I thought

nice progress man! love the expression of the servant and the skulls in the smoke are great, the hair however is not very visible but I know that you are aware of it. I think is time to move on to the master and later if there is still time fine tune this guy.

Yeah Snows time to move on. Hey glad you're back man-what a great experience I am sure.

Today I am modeling the King's head and hands. I think the rest of him will be extensive clothing. I will need a few days just for the beard I am sure. I'm not putting hair on the servant-I think he looks better bald.

The expression works well. As you work on it, I'm sure he'll start to look older. (like your sketch)

Thanks guys. I tried to get shag hair to work for the beard yesterday but it was REALLY slow. If I was using it for the foreground character, I would wait but since the master is in background I am going to model the beard and hair.

Some fine modeling and textures here brandon.....I think you can add some thickness to the center of the moustache....perhaps a bit more clumping.....And a bit of a curve from the hair start point to the tip......

Ok...some real nice creations here, you are moving along quite well, and I'll be looking in to see more as you go along......:arteest:

May be it would help if the hair went from thin to think? no sure what it is but it looks like they are plugs or one of those that you glue on.

looking good there Brandon, I think the forehead needs more color variation.

Thanks for the posts guys. Im glad you've stuck with me on this. Thanks for the tips. The mustache definately needs thickening . I agree Angel that the forehead is a little barren. I am trying to figure out Shag/Hair. I dont get why the hair looks like Mardi Gras hair unless you tweak it endlessly. If I had shown the first few tests you would have laughed your heads off. In my opinion even the default settings should look remotely close to human hair unless you tell it not to. I am planning on some major work on this in the next few days. Im feeling the crunch!!!
