Hey Snakeman,

I whipped up a little sample. This is a Maya 4.5 file, though.
Net Maya File (http://www.community3d.com/stuff/net_test.zip)

Also, here is a quickie AVI file (DivX 5.02) to show what's going on:
Net AVI (http://www.community3d.com/stuff/net_test.avi)

The method I used was to create a simple mesh out of a bunch of stretched polygonal cubes -- I probably should have used either nurbs or a lattice deformer around them to get the best deformation results. I also combined the mesh to create one object.
Next, I created a cloth garment (I used a base resolution of 150) the same dimensions as the net, created 4 locators and put one at each corner. Then I went around to each corner of the cloth, grabbed some vertices there, transform constrained that corner to it's appropriate locator, giving me 4 locators attached to the corners of the cloth object.
Then, I selected the mesh geometry and then the cloth. With both selected, I attached a Wrap Deformer which will cause the mesh geometry to follow the behavior of the cloth.
I set the Max Distance to .2.

Finally, I grouped the locators and then animated the group to lift up in the Y direction and then scaled the group so the locators met in the center. Simple Simon.

I could have a lot more tweaking to get the mesh to look better. It looks a little like a cargo net.
All sorts of dynamics could be used to make it lift a box or do some other fancy things....I'll leave that to you.

Hope that helps. Ask if you need clarification...

Good luck!

You could use cloth and put a nice texture in it to make it look like a net....

I would go with a poly mesh and a grid texture for color and transparency, you will end up with a low poly count and for the animation you can use cloth as said before.
