OK. I'm finaly in.
Breefly my idea. In this story we've got a stress and I'd say a tragedy of one who serves against his will - the hourse. Here I propose a problem without solution:a Master overcomed with hate and excitement demands to turn back to defeat the dragon which is
too far from reality...
There is no escape and no choise for the Servant whose being protest against deadly decision.
Forse and Submission, Fear and Madness...

O.K. I think to finaly have made my decision about Master's appearence (only head for now).
He should be feeling himself above everyone - he is too over-confidently.
Our oppinion doesn't interess him.
And I guess e will not be fat as in previous version :)

Finaly happy with Master's concept. As his arms and face are main "acting parts" I decided to make
them more expressive. On his left hand also will be a kind of shield (rough concept on right)

ok Reinier, here finaly an update. Hope in this night I'll give a life to another one.
So, here I've got magior proportions and also props of a Master sitting. Horse is stylised (as all characters:), to underline the most important parts for my composition, so Neeno maybe this don't fits you as a full reference but anyway I tried to maintain main muscles. Sorry gyus for not good quality - this time was digital camera instead of scanner.

Clear scene, narrative.
Horse is lovely, when stylizing the animals you must keep eye on the rate of caricaturising dose just because sometimes they turn into another animal. Here your horse seem to be turning into a mule.

Honestly, I didn't think that such a "trap" can happen! Thanks a lot man.
From now on I'll keep an eye on that!
For now I think it is not jet a mule (ufff!!). I gonna see later during posing how it's proportions will look and how much "horse aspect" it will have :)
Typycal head shape, long neck and high "back part" will maintain the horse appearing.
Anyway, maybe later I'll make legs longer.

that modelling is looking lovely, I REALLY like the style.
Iīm just a bit concerned about the " chest" of the horse. Itīs very small and the legs therefore look out of place (maybe a little short too). Taking in account the perspective, I think it will be desirable the opposite effect, to give a powerful appearance to the horse. I hope you can understand all this.

ok, horse modelling done, except tail and hairs. Oh yes, teeth still missing - to found jet a picture with their alignment. Now I'll leave it as it is and pass directly to master's head! Hairs will be added later on - during texturing as I think to use opasity maps for them.
Oh, have noticed only now - need to correct undesired mesh distorsion on bottom of back legs!
Ah, and tongue - how could I forget:)

I'm glad I can proceed now to another stage - Master. Well now, as usual, is a rough beginning, but from this moment I turn off my 3d and bussy day starts - it has it's own duties to propose:) so I post this image at such a phase. Anyway now I've got an idea to what direction to continue. Distortions will be elliminated...
Future will be better:)

Need to give a look at my horse anatomy reference also - didn't look at it since start
- maybe there is really some stuff to correct. Anyway, that horse's model is still fresh - after
finishing master gonna fix some proportions a well.
Now I think I need to sleep a couple of hours more...zzzzzzz

Well, I've changed some proportions of my horse (chest, legs) and suarly - teeth with tongue (not much detailed due to it's stylisation and afterall, now I can't offer myself lots of details untill I have all in general mass:). Now go back to master...

Looking quite nice Vol......... Well done.......Somehow when I look at him I feel he needs this something more.......It's really a taste thing so dont mind me much.....but if he were in my hands I would give him more exageration.....a bit more size....muscle........More like Donkey In shrek when he became the stallion.........Just thinking out loud here.what you have is real nice....but I would just add a bit more pop to it,more fun and exageration......Anyways keep it going,I;ll be looking in....all the best to you....:arteest:

I guess I've finished with master's head modelling in general. Remains the same as for horse: hairs (think to make them also with planes and opacity maps). I've put some proxy eyes just to show their future alignement. Ah, the same mistake - forgot teeth:))
ok, add them later. And now - back to horse. Gotta make it cool!

Oh my gosh, all of you concepts are just making me giggle! I just love them! That horse is so awesome, I especially love the image of him after you added the teeth. He has such a hilariously proud look! And the master's face is coming along so nicely!

I recently woke up, so now need to remember what I has finishing with...
In my last version of a horse I've got those #%^#* mesh distortions
whtich hard to get rid of if working with hi-res mesh! Those are in rear part of model...
Guess I'll turn back to my recovered version and go in another direction. Think this won't take
lots of time - just to be happy with it!

Ok, I'm happy (for now ;-)
I've added more evident and a bit increased muscles. Adjustet nose holes as well.
I leave it in this condition till texturing phase (well, if some day I will not notice something
which won't leave me calm:))

Ok, this evening/night have to finish my master's body (well, only those parts uncovered by armour and clothing). Now I've got head and hand comleted, so still need to stich htem, add neck (oh, recently remebered about this:) and define general corpo shape.
Ok,ok - less words, more action! In some time gonna post more images.

Here is some of my progress with master.
No shading for now - only some diffuse color different from gray.
Bottom part will be added soon (more or less:)
Don't pay much attention on his chest and that what is lower it - that part will be covered
by armour, so just to create some volume...
Well, actually now got no idea how to quickly setup bones for neck movement.
Ok, that will figure out later (maybe will use just poly modelling - that's not an animation, but I'd like to practice:)
In some details he's a bit different from scetch but not much.
Now continue with the rest:)

Here all master's body is finished (middle body part - the same, only schematical to have some volume).
In the middle geometry is not connected - no need:)
Well, some tweaking could happen - no doubts (as usual:)
Boots are ready (in general) right now cause they were created from legs' geometry, but he is still nude...
Tomorrow - begin with clothing.
Maybe boots will be changed later on - could be they will not fit properly the horse.

вот только по моему сугубо ламерскому мнению плечи уж больно грубую границу имеют с остальной частью рук, даже для мультяшного перса. И кисти рук совсем не нравятся, они должны заканчиваться там, где у тебя безымяный палец, хотя если они будут сжаты в кулак то мож и нормально будет.
Вобщем мои советы можешь и не слушать :)

Recently have tried to figure out some texturing method... Well, have some problems with unwrapping:( master's head - too many overlaping vertexes... Ok, no problem - only need to learn some tutorials:)
Still not sure - wheather use nuwrap on low-res or high-res mesh.
Ellon, спасибо за комент! Я хочу, чтоб руки были наиболее выразительными (на равне с лицом), потому и удлинил их. Да и пальцы хотелось иметь длинными... Ничего - при позиционировании погляжу - может чего и придется изменить. Да, плечами не очень я доволен, но хотел сначала проверить, как там будет сгиб при снаряжении костями, а там возможно придется подкорректировать немного.
Не скромничай - как так "не слушать"!!! Слушать, слушать!

Uff, I guess I've fixed up my "unwrapping problem" :) Only pretty much time needed... But that's later. Anyway, for now I've found new solution for characters' hairs. So I'm double happy now! I was so concentrated on max that I've completely forgoten about my old but good cinema4d (issue 2000 !). It has cool freeware (!) plug-in for creating grass and hairs (HairDepartment by BGS group). Well, it has bugs but for stills works perfectly and very fast to use! Here I've created hairs for master - before posing cause their shape will not chage due to their short lenght. But for horse I'll make them after posing because I'll be able to see what direction and shape to set up. Here hairs are not rich for polygons cause they will not be seen a lot and will not appear in big size on the final picture (weel, let's see:)

hyperSasquatch, well, actually I've posted explanations together with picture, but anyway, briefly: I've usd hair-creating plug-in for cinema4d (suggest that you try this soft - good stuff, older issues can be obtained for free!), then I've exported model back to max and now hairs are just polygon model. If I want to change them, I'll have to put model again to cin4d and create new hairs, as plu-in uses model geometry for this... Pretty simple!

I read that you've had problems with doing it in MAX. It's probably to late now that you solved it with cinema4d, but have you checked out Ornatrix (http://www.ibmr.net/Ornatrix/)? There is a free demo to try. I've just tested it briefly so I can't really say much but I've seen some pretty good results with it. Might come in handy another time.
So, what's next? The environment? Looking forward to see more - splendid so far:)

Continue with modelling. This time Dragon, as promised:)
I don't want ot split my workflow, so first gonna do all modelling
(well, maybe will start texturing right after all character models done and will continue with surroundings later).
For now I've got a head. Main body mass will not take lot's of time but wings and especially claws require more accurasy:)
Happy to have finaly moved on. Last night I was sleaping despite my plans, so hope to continue today/tomorrow...
And as usual - all kinds of C&Cs are my sence of life:)

Looking good, Deryk! Really dig your style. (strong features) As far as crit, the only thing that sticks out for me is the mouth seems a little "empty"...I think it's the width of the jaw compared to the tongue...You might want to try bringing the underside of the tongue (near the back) down to meet the bottom of the mouth and maybe widen the tongue a little in the back. It seems to be floating in the mouth. The eyes, snout, etc are right on and very cool. Keep it up! :thumbsup:

Ok, more or less I've defined dragon's body shape. Well, some artifacts on wings still remain - I will see wheather to correct them with textures or doing more adjusments in model...
Dragon will be dark in general so I beleive some stuff will not be visible!
Anyway, tongue is corrected a bit - safe05, Virtuoso - thank you for suggestions!

i agree with the boys above about the tounge to jaw ratio... maybe it would just be easier to redesign the tounge... i mean u would assume that a dragon has a tounge like a snake but really they would probably have a crocodile... see if u can find some images.
its a really cool dragon.. very streamline and he talons on its feet rock!!
i think u need to express the flexability of the tail abit tho

I like your horse, style and modeling, very cool man ! the haed of your Master is kinda cool too!
Your dragon appear more as a bat to me though ;O) ... it could be much thicker, keep in mind it's got bones structure underneath, organs, muscles... I can feel that on your horse even though it's stylized... but with the dragon I don't... and its head is a bit flat to my taste.

Sorry - still no updates... Well, actually Dragon is already textured and even "boned" but now I don't like it's textures! Gonna change it and also overall mapping style :(

That's an evil looking critter you've got going there. If I was to add anything I'd say give him bigger muscles around his wing joints. Perhaps take a look at a fruit bats structure, I know it's fantasy but it helps to have refrence. Looking good i'll be watching the development. :thumbsup:

And here as promised more informational stuff :)
I've put unwrapping coords, example of main color map (as there couple of them mixed) and some clearer veiws of textured model.
Well, don't laugh, but now I find color scheme very close to "Incredibles" style, but I swear that was not in mind :) - I've noticed it only at the end!
Obviously that animation have caused great influence on my mind:) But I like as it is now - black lines to underline some important parts, like eyes, long tale etc.
I want it to be bright, so I've choosen reddish/orange colors. And it will have a smoke going from it's mouth, so these colors are appropriate for FIRE feeling I guess.
What do you think?
P.S.: ah, now have noticed unsutisfactive opacity on wing... Dam, need to corrrect it.

Well, not totally beginner:), but I really didn't do unwrapping with complex models and some cool bone tools in max before (as previously I worked in cinema4d). So actually i was doing the same work twice - mistakes and progress always go together:)

hey! colors are a great choice! I thought it was going to be green but red is more powerful and... violent!
hereīs a couple of suggestions: Iīll try to add a little more bumpiness to the draki lol, and just watch out the silhouette to make it readable, like it is a pity to loose the great shape the dragonīs head has. Well just suggestions, anyway it looks very good now.

Amout of bumps will be suarly corrected whem there will be final composition (when I can see wheather it is visible enough from camera point or not). And position - yes it gonna be another. Ok, finaly new post from me. Sorry, I was so bussy these days (and I'm afraid will be:)... Never mind :) So, here is Master I'd say finished with textures (just a little tweaking with uvw for metal plain near his neck and shading hairs). I want also add eyebrows but after posind and making face expression. Still rigging remains. And horse of coures:) Sorry Gunilla, guess I'll finish all characters before envirobment :(

For now i have my hrse's texturing. Would have posted earlier but I had to learn some stuff using mentalray (as this renderer is new for me). For now I leave it as it is, but later on want to add hairs (ok, told that before, sorry) and some little hairs on bottom of legs.
But now I have to hurry up with the stuff to put on the horse, rigg it and let master to take his place. After - envir.
Dam, last day haven't appropriate mood for work - shame on me :( today must work better!

The front legs of the horse stick out a bit too far at the lower joint, are you going for an anotomy correct one or is this intentional? :hmm:. Other than that no real crits.

uff, these days were not much productive (ok, ok, no more negative comments from me;)
but anyway for now I can show my object composing process. I've defined general frames with square aspect, camera rotation to the left and the first layout of characters. Evironments are quick dravn not to leave empty soace around but it already defines color scheme. There are still some details in modelling and posing not done (stirrups, refine position of shield, tiny fur for "on-horse" clothes sides, master's fingers have not 100% correct positioning etc.) I'll also make some texture tweaking (first candate - dragon's wing transarency)
And ligthning - just rough setup to illuminate unioformly my scene. Have to work more (still not a lightning wip jet :)
Yes, yes, horse's hairs will arrive soon - just was so excited having arrived to overall composition that I've completely forget abuot them! Sorry ;)
As always I wait impatiently for your c&Cs!

safe05 - thanks mate! Yes, I'll ellaborate dragon's pose more towards longer neck. It is really pitty for me that his head shape getting lost from front view but otherwise he will ot fit general "look at" between characters. Will try to do something here.

JR.BRAZ - glad you like characters' expressions as I had little doubts about them! This background is just "proxy" - there will be also 3d objects suarly. But in general I want to leave it simple because of time limits and due to low horison there will not be visible many details and I just want ot create huge open space.
bealobo - thank you Beatriz! Really pleasant to hear about 3d film when talking about my picture! Ye, that's soe kind of puzzle - I was creating dragon just for fun and didn't think much wheather all his shpes will have good angle towards spectator... But hope to fix it a little!
But now I feel much much better - now have some general stuff almost alive so it becomes easier!

Yes, now deadline is sooo close but I feel myself really good! And mostly thanks to all your post here! But also I guess to begin final renderings in two days, though when finish revealed in perspective I can be calm... But not to sleep.
I've recently finished modelling of missing accesoires and "ground part" of surroundings and in couple of hours will post some update - just need to finish texturing.
Mordalles - appreciate you're passing by my thread with so optimistic comments, mate!
mmbenya - really incouraging to see you like the dynamics in my scene - I wanted so much to avoid still look of models (as sometimes happens with 3d still images) that now I'm happy I succeed in that!
Virtuoso - thank you for warm wishes! Glad you're here again! Yes, hard work is always needed, the only thing is one's will :)
tilite - wow, really long post, but I just love long posts!! Happy you like the result comming out! Thank you sooo muuuch for that links! That tutorial on second link is wonderlful indeed! Unfortunately for now I only viewed it quickly coz my e-net at home can't survive during openng pictures but I will visit it very soon for deep study - will have some free and fast net! Anyway, I've already made all hairs and I'm afraid to have no time for redoing (as I'm sure the technique described in that tut is better than myne :)
But this will give exp for future work - life has just began!

Ok, as promissed here is another update to your attention!
master and servant: added some equipment and hairs for horse (as it is frightened I wanted hairs appear "curly" and not "wavy beatiful" :) Tail is supposed to be burbned a bit - otherwise why horse is so afraid ? Also added particled comming out hores'e legs.
dragon - changed a bit his head's position according to your, guys, suggestions!
surroundings - general layout of "terrain" parts - still need to ajust colors, add some fog for mountains to make them appear far away, more dust around horse, some smoke from hores's tail and dragon's mouth :) And sky suarly is not done yet. And of course final tweaking (especialy materials' shading) after applying defined lightning model and changing render engine (now it is max default scanline without gi - just to show models and textures).
So, want to share my process with you!
What do you think, people???

Great1 I can really feel the action in the pse. The only thing getting me is the position on the horses leg. Wouldn't the front/right leg be extended? But that's just a nit pick. Good luck in the comp and nice entry!

Been busy, huh? ;) Looks good. much better pose for the dragon, easier to make out its head. The horse's mane seems a little uniform in color almost as if it's missing shadows. Are you using global illumination for your scene? I've noticed a similar effect with some of my hair models when using GI or Max's "skylight". If you ended up using a hair plugin, you might want to try setting the root color to something darker. Regardless, it's coming along great. Keep it up! :thumbsup:

Sorry sooo much for not beeing here for pretty long time!
You're right, safe05 - I was really busy, but busy with challenge - that's optimistic fact!
Actually now I work on lightning as all modelling and surroundings I've already made! Uff, only sky remains but I guess that's will not take lots of time. I'll make it with particles and in post it will be blured a bit.
Ok, for now I've devided scene onto three "planes" to render separately but using the same lightning model as my pc now begin to die with horse and master :) Well, soon I'll post lightned image with master and servant in foreground but still need to do some tweaking and after all - it takes 15-20 min for each test frame 500x500 so not much work but much time needed!
3dRaven - thanks for following my work! But I leave those mountastins as they are... Following your suggestion will really incrase feeling of desert land but in my image I want to create only "middle" between dry south terrain and some fairy-tale. Anyway, thanks a lot for support, friend! by the way - already downloaded that max file - examining it now!

safe05 - that image rendered with scanline without gi and hairs with some self-illumination - just to show models. Now I'm testing in mental ray and hairs appear different. And after all I've discovered great and FREE plug-in for max to create cool hairs! And it is really easy to use! Guess I'll make new hairs!

Well, this is lightning of the scene. Foreground with master and servant darker while mountains and dragon - brighter (to achieve contrast and to add some feeling of hot evening). Scene is outdoor so lightning model is not complicated - two directional lights (one for speculars and another to fill darker areas) and skylight to produce diffuse light. Hairs are not jet defined - as usual :) Sorry...
When I finish with hairs I'll launch rendering full-size foreground, dragon and mountains with sky. Dust and slight fog will be added later on.
Please, make me happy with some words :)

Hey Deryk, looking good! IMO, the hairs look much better with this shading. Might also want to darken the nostrils of the horse, the fact that it's the same color as the skin is kind of throwing me. Are you planning on adding anything else to the background? The reason I ask is that the sky looks as if it could use a little something extra. (clouds, maybe another dragon way in the distance, etc.) I really like your choice of colors. For this piece. Keep going! Almost there! :bounce:

tilite - well, I want to reach the feeling of dusty/foggy environment with "smoked" sky so I prefer very soft diffuse lightning (like that on summer days just before rain) when shadows are almost invisible (just slight "dark zones" under objects). But maybe I'll add shdows casting to key light - need to do some test renders... Thanks a lot for attention, mate!!
3dRaven - dam, really great idea! But I don't have enough time now - everything is already defined except tiny details :( Anyway, I guess contrast is already present with sky/ground/characters. Learn all the time :)
safe05 - welcome again, friend! Suarly this bg is not a "sky' as it should be! Soon will post post-prod wip where I'll show all main layers with final sky as well. Actually I wouldn't add more characters - this scene can become too heavy.

Ufff, ok, finaly I begin working on post processing!!
I\'ve rendered scene in splitted layers (as was planned :) and than worked on them separately in photoshop to sdjust colors etc.
For foreground (Mas & Serv, ground with stones) I decided to add reddish tint to create a feeling of heat which is going to arrive ;)
Still some tweaking remain...
In couple of hours will post final image!!

It is really great challenge this time for me! I've learned huge amount of new stuff, got so much fresh experience and watched workflow of numerous good artist to have a possibility to learn more and more!
Idea of such an event is just genius!
CGnetworks/talk opened for me real world of digital creativity - before it were just magazines and some sites with galleries and tutorials but not INTERACTIVE - just to watch as a book! And here I could really participate and receive feedbacks during existing actual work process - like if I was at some kind of masterclass or a school!
Now I can relax a bit and have a pleasure to watch finished works during public voting...

deryk just looking at your image again i noticed a very poweful connection between the Master and servant here.. a typical everyday Master servant relationship for example a dog and its owner when the owner is introuble the dog tries in everyway possible to save his owner.. and i just noticed the ever so slight look in the masters eyes basically telling the horse to save him.. a look of trust yet horrified at whats behind him.. and the horse looking back at his master sort of not wanting to loose his trust in him but scared he might fail.. its a powerful image you should be proud and very happy at what you've created.. i really like ti deryk and once again all the best my friend i hope the judges see what i see... its a fantastic and well thought of image with great original style!!

Ha, it's strange but I was planning a bit another story at the beginning, but during workflow different ways appear and beeing free to choose (an advantage of creating not for clients :) I really decided to make a feeling of runaway for both - fear for both (but with different aim for each one...). Master made a dangerous mistake estimating his strenght and servant, as you told, again comes to rescue... I hope this escape gonna have happy ending (ok, I don't regret about the master but I worry for horse :)
