View Full Version : tooth brush bristles?
cad3dfx 09-25-2002, 09:48 PM I have a toothbrush that I'm rendering. Without the bristles
it renders in like 3 seconds, but then with the bristles it renders in
about 5 minutes. The bristles are made up of around 1000 lines.
I'm wondering is there a different appoach to this inorder to
speed up my render times?
Thanks in advance.

oh my bad,
about 3500 lines,
and now that I ungrouped them, It's rendering in about 14
seconds. Don't know what that was all about.
That sounds very odd! Ungrouping should have no effect on the render times...
Do you have any of the objects/materials raytracing in the scene?
Are you using shadowmaps or raytraced shadows? Omni's or spots/directs?
A lot of the above will affect render times - but then I spose if you haven't changed any of them, then it must be the ungrouping thing... Could you try re-grouping them and rendering again? I'm just keen to see if this is a bug in Max :D
Cheers!

Yeah, I re-grouped them and then re-rendered and no problem.
I'm guessing that the person who sent me the file was useing
MAX 4 and I opened it in MAX 5 and mabey that had something
to do with it? No clue.
But let me ask another question, my viewport is literally
chokeing on the 3500 lines that make up the bristles, and other
than hideing them is there a way to optimize my viewport
from chokeing on them.
Thanks,

not unless discreet do something useful for once and encode a "Bounding box for groups" feature...
you may be able to collapse them all to one editable mesh....but then that could screw up any animation they had...
if theyre renderable splines then u can always turn the render dispay in the viewports
Why don't you just attach all splines in one editable spline? That way you will have just one bounding box.

WWWWWWWWWWWWWWow........!!!!!!!!!
I just installed the quadro driver with the rivatuner.exe and
MAXtreme4 drivers.
Guess I don't need new video card.
That same scene that I was complaining about is
no longer an issue.
I HAD a geforce2 400MX now I have a very fast viewport.
Take a look... you are gonna wanna sift around a little...
looks like diferent cards need diferent drivers...
but it's worth it if you don't mess up your system!
