Just some more progress on the dog, added front legs & paws, not sure if I;m happy with it, but I think I am . . .

1st pass at the concept. I skipped the doodle fase and went straight on to detailing it a little including colorconcept. Will probably go a little more indepth in this before I start modeling.

I tried to get a sence of 'what happened' and a subtle reversal of roles by putting the ball in the humans hand, suggesting it was him getting the ball instead of the dog.

Ok, so I decided that the concept should do for now and started modeling, which is what I do better then concepting anyway. On a side-note, I would NOT like to say thank you to my dog. what a mess trying to get him to sit still for some nice reference photo's

Blown away, seriously. I just want to squeeze that dog and he isnt even finished. Very good poly flow, doesnt come off stylized or cartoony....it's a cute dog man. I really want to see this finished :)

BTW...my dog wishes I fetch the ball :scream:

Equinoxx
03-27-2005, 01:13 AM
thx. after I posted this i changed the flow around the nose so that's better now.
I'm trying for realistic, so the comment about it not being cartoony makes my day.

more soon.

Hehe Ian, you lil bugger. I was hoping you'd drop by . . prettending to be all busy and whatnot. To busy for your friends now ey, but then again, you're not .

good to see ya my friend.
Go for the dog, I'd like a little tete a tete with you . . .

as for the eyes, yeah I really wnat to nail them, a dogs eyes are what describes the dog as a whole in my opinion...

Aha - Mr Noxx!

I really really like the idea. One suggestion, you could have the guy lying face down in the grass, weakly offering the ball up to the dog... This could exaggerate the relationship between the two, plus the dog could then be looking down at him - creating the perfect contrast to the 'His Master's Voice' pose of the dog looking expectantly upward.

Look forward to more :D

Equinoxx
03-28-2005, 01:15 PM
Kris, thx, that makes the both of us :D

Reinier, thank you

Phyle, thank you as well. hope I can offer things to make you keep coming back.

AJ, long time no talkie, not a bad Idea at all, but on the other hand, I sort of want the master / servant relationship to be blurred just a little.

on the one hand you have the dog as servant, dragging the man outof the water, on the other hand there's the man, having gotten the ball for the dog.

I'll experiment once i get to laying out the scene. perhaps it'll prove to be better and stronger to have the man indeed offering up the ball. we'll see.

thx for the input tho.

cheers,

Yves

Cool looking dog you got there. The only thing that bothers me is that sharp edge/crease on the neck.

Geta-Ve
03-30-2005, 04:56 AM
wow nice man! I really like this, very simple and relaxing (or so it looks) hehe

Great modelling job so far!!

Equinoxx
03-30-2005, 07:26 AM
Pencilhead, if you mean the one running downwards on the front of the throat, dogs have that, I should know since this is MY dog. it's somewhat loose skin [that, agreed, I need to make appear more dangling]

Geta, thx :D I can't seem to break away from this clean style

Geta-Ve
03-30-2005, 07:53 AM
Heh, but I think it works for what your going for :D you could always just sneeze on your drawings and hope that spices things up a bit ;)

EDIT: took a good look at your concept and realized the dog was saving the guy, to be honest my first thought was the guy was just relaxing under the tree with his dog, you know? heh. Well this definatly adds to the overall of the image.

Perhaps make the guy a bit pale? and a more dramatic pose for the dog? and a lazer eye, and a huge robotic.........er... *cough* nevermind

Equinoxx
03-30-2005, 08:12 AM
yeah the final image will have some more drama to it and it will be more obvious that the dog is saving the guy. I want the viewer to wonder who the master and who the servant is.

As a dog owner I often wonder if it's me who is the master or if it's my dog. He's got a mind of his own if you know what I mean. I thought that would be very fitting in this challenge.

Trying to go for an image with an underlying message so to speak.

Check this out..

In order for your dog to be as happy as he wants he only has to obey 3 simple commands

Come
Sit/Stay
Fetch

With those commands he gets, your love, food, toys, play, friendship, excersize, your attention, etc etc

;)

Just something to think about (if only children were so easy)

Equinoxx
03-30-2005, 08:47 AM
if only it were that easy. When I play fetch he drops the ball just outof my reach so i have to walk over to pick it up. I admit we spoiled him when he was young so he isn't the most obedient dog ;)

Love the concept man! Thought at first you could maybe have the dog pulling the man by a leash to further the concept but after reading I like the idea of the lines of relationship being blurred. Also like the drawing of the concept drawing. Good luck to ya

thx guys,

I was just wondering, are the images dark for you guys ?
It's damn dark here at the office while at home they look fine . . .

Looks fine to me at home but to be sure I think you can turn the shader a little bit less dark for the next posts :)
Looks great BTW ;)

I have to say I like how the dog is coming along. This should turn out pretty good. Like others have mention some brighter images would be nice though. Keep it up and good luck.

Equinoxx

Toh Kwan, thx, exactly what I was going for, trying to get some feelings into the piece.

Gehry, I learned that a dog isn't that much different from a human in terms of edgeloops and things like that. The form, yeah that's different, but the same techniques apply.

Tony, thx, following images will be brighter ;)

on a sidenote, how's this in ways of brightness ? better like this ?

on a sidenote, how's this in ways of brightness ? better like this ?

I hope you didn't take me the wrong way.

it's just for me when a model has the default or grayish shader on it, it's easier to see the contours on the model better. Like how the shoulder muscle transitions to the rest of the body or the brow transitions to the eye socket.

Usually it wouldn't matter, but I'ma work looking on a crappy monitor so when there is not much contrast a darker image sort of bleeds all together.

Wasn't trying to be an ass.

Equinoxx

I hope you didn't take me the wrong way.

Not at all my good man. I was serious when I asked if it's better, I mean, what good does it do If I show progress and nobody can see it because it's to dark.

Don't worry man, ALL crits are taken in a good way.

that said, you haven't answered my question, is it better now :D

dmonk
03-30-2005, 08:35 PM
Definitely better and nice update.

Just looking at the model, I think Golden retriever, but it also has it's own look, which is your own personal touch.

Equinoxx
03-30-2005, 08:41 PM
excellent.

and Yeah you've seen it almost right, it's actually a Labrador Retriever, which is basically a Golden Retriever with shorter hair.

hey there dude.. i totally agree with the other folks very heart warming feeling to this piece. your dog model has come along quiet nicely, it looks great i cant see anything wrong with it. Reminds me of a gentle yet strong dog "A mans best friend" feeling to this dog.. Make sure you bring out the total feeling that the dog is a mans best friend in this image exactly like you have in your concept.... very nice dude very very nice...
